I run a 10 mile trace race every summer and it is one of my favorite distances to run, especially on the trails.

Ten miles is probably my favorite distance to run, because double digits makes me feel accomplished without taking a ton of time. Alas, there are no 10M races where I live. It's 5k or half-marathon or nothing (unless you want to commit to the full!).

I'll be racing a 10 mile in 2016 as a practice race ahead of another BQ attempt. I'm quite looking forward to it!

Ten miles - an interesting distance overlooked by many, particular those on their fast quest for a HM. Sadly, many HM and M wannabes burn out in their enthusiastic rush to do those distances when they're not ready.

By mastering the 10M race, you can then make a more rational decision about whether to go for longer distances or not, before laying out the hundreds of dollars that beginners often find themselves thoughtlessly spending on race registration fees, training programs, etc. For those that come to appreciate 10 mile races, there are many such races to enjoy.

Some other reasons why 10M is so worthwhile:

- 10M is the first common race distance where nutrition plays a significant role. Anyone can get through a 10K with a poor diet or without proper hydration. With a 10M, you'll discover why nutrition and hydration are a must but without the dangers of bonking that occur in longer races.

- 10M requires significantly less training than longer distances. Training programs for longer distances expect that people run at least two days in a row during the week. For many people, this is an invitation to injury. Many people train for 10Ms by running just 3 times a week leaving plenty of time for rest and cross-training. And you'll always be fresh on your runs this way.

- 10M is walkable. At a 16 minute per mile pace, it takes 2h40m - long enough for a great workout. By comparison, a HM takes 3h30m. And most HMs won't keep their courses open that long.
