I'm not sure if that was directed at me, but I don't have health care insurance due to obamacare.
That being said, I started the keto diet and my weight FINALLY started to decrease. woohoo!

In my humble opinion I think we should give it an honest 'go', take a few years to adjust things, and set a time limit. If you really truly tried the things suggested, and they didn't get your weight loss moving, then I would call in a medical team to analyze what's going on. Get your metabolism tested, and your thyroid, go to a dietitian, have a fitness trainer involved.

I've always slowly gained; I have never lost. But I also know that I've not stuck to one quest long enough, nor lined up all categories (calorie limit, plenty of fiber and protein and water, less white flour and potatoes...) at the same time.

So this year, with the new knowledge about myself I've acquired, is MY year. And if it doesn't work now, I will have to get help. At 250 I certainly want to stop the GAIN.

I have not been off to a good start though. I'm caving too frequently, and I had 'female health' set backs a couple of times.
I need to make some public commitments to keep me accountable.

And we all lived happily ever after...

These SparkPeople seem to be onto something. A diet with controlled calorie intake and balanced nutrition coupled with regular physical activity. Could it become the latest fad?? Nah, too easy and no way for hucksters to get rich since anybody can do it without any potions or secrets to be revealed at the end of your payment plan.

A small market across the street from my orthopedic surgeons office is a cherished memory. My dad gave me 10 cents if I was good for the doctor and it took me a long time to pick from all the penny candies.

Aw...! Speaking of candy by the cent...
Every once in a while my mom would go to Ben Franklin's and come home with a small brown paper sack of penny candy. She would come home and pour it onto the table and let us girls choose from it. It was so fun! Especially when Sixlets came into being. I love those things!

My weight gain came on due to stress, not from over eating or drinking. I have a had a very healthy way of eating since 2002, but made the bigger changes in 2007. I never would have believed stress could cause weight gain until it happened to me.

I have to be very careful with my exercising; how much/how often, because it causes my body to go into stress mode.

My parents were not good examples of healthy eating. (they still aren't) My step dad has diabetes 2 and my mother was (is?) a carboholic and has cancer.

I (and probably most of us on this form) grew up eating 3 meals a day. We might have had a treat when the ice cream man came by, but that was not often. I don't remember munching on snacks.I do remember eating apples off the tree but if there wasn't a tree we didn't snack.

Our grocery store didn't have carts. My Mother made a list and stood at the counter and the list was filled with no extras, - no impulsive buying in those days. No cake mixes or the like...but a big bag of flour to make them.

Candy was bought by the piece. A piece for a penny or two...No 1 lb. bags of candy, chips, and all the various snacks you can think of. We didn't have them and didn't buy or eat them.

I wouldn't want to go back to those shopping days but it makes me think of controlling my impulsive buying the next time I'm at the super market.

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

I just picked one up via Bookbub for $1.99 that looks interesting. I put it on the Nook. (I try to keep fiction on Kindle and nonfiction on Nook.) I haven't started it yet, but it looks interesting. I've kind of given up on nutrition books since I can't find time to read anywhere near the number of books I have queued up. I'm happy with my menus and what I eat must be working because my weight loss continues slowly and I'm usually very close to goal on nutrients. Exercise is another story. I get bored or my body gets used to it and I have to keep changing up. Anyhoo, here's the book:

Wanderlust: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit

Good idea for a topic.
No I haven't read them.

As for your answer about families. I believe our parents did it right, but then WE got relaxed and enjoyed all the available options of foods and snacks and drinks. We got caught up in it, and it became a baaaaaad habit.
Now WE struggle with weight gain. And our kids are exposed to even MORE items.

It will take a lot of gumption to fight what we, as a society, are confronted with.
It starts HERE! on sparkpeople.

And we all lived happily ever after...

I'm currently reading Grain Brain by David Perlmutter MD.
There seems to be a correlation between diabetes 2 and Alzheimers. Some doctors consider is diabetes 3.

Has anyone read this book or heard about the connection of these two issues?

I was thinking this would be a good place to share books, articles or links to other sites we've come across that we'd like to share with each other.

How many of you like to research more about what is happening with health and finding ways to make your life healthier?

Can anyone remember a time when people in your family were healthy and eating was not a big deal?

The other day I was on the treadmill and watching a show called Big Ward. There are now new terminologies that made me sad: super obese and super morbidly obese and diabesity.

What I've found while watching this is mostly an ignorance in healthy ways of eating. Why aren't families teaching this? Where did it get lost?
