I think I'm finally at the point where I know what works for me and what doesn't. I've discovered how not to GAIN and I it seems to me that adding more cardio minutes to each day will get the weight LOSS moving for me.
I've been fine-tuning things for a few years now, and though I'm still at a heavy weight, I'm finally comfortable knowing what works for my body and what doesn't.
And I've learned so much consistency over the past 2 1/2 years that it's so much easier now to follow through on it, than before.
I'll be writing more about my thoughts on this topic on Monday's blog.

I DID manage to write my Family Outing blog last night, if anyone is interested. Some funny stuff.

And we all lived happily ever after...

STRNGNGRNDED I guess I just got fed up with not losing the way I was eating.

My DH had a friend Dr. who had success with the Medifast diet so my daughter and I decided to give it a try. My plan was to prove it wouldn't work, I think. But, we both committed to each other we'd try it for a month....

We both bought a case of starter food and worked together over phone and internet, daily. We both ventured into this with our personal challenge knowing it wouldn't work. We made a game of it and had fun planning the little meals we were allowed.

It is a plan of 6 meals. The meals are 8 oz of variety of choices, some ok some not, packed with vitamins. One of the daily meals is your choice of meats, with unlimited salads so that was ok but got boring to eat plain meats daily. (Later on I chose only their "meal" foods I liked - pretty limited selection, but even now they keep me from gaining.)

I found a routine. Oatmeal when I got up. mid-morning snack was an antioxidant chocolate shake, lunch usually an ok chicken soup but 1 egg was also a choice, mid-afternoon I usually chose a brownie or cookie, and dinner was beef or chicken with a salad. The meals were usually 2.5 hours apart so I was seldom hungry and if I was I knew in a half hour i could have the next meal so had a glass of water (my choice of no calorie beverage). The last "meal" of the day was a soft serve chocolate mint whipped up. I was only doing this for a month and also it was a time when we were not planning meals out. I was not bored to eat the same routine - after all it was only for a month...

I didn't bother weighing myself just followed the routine without a stress of dieting. Sometimes I even forgot to eat the mid morning or afternoon snacks. This was only a month ... DH and I have dinner together and I'd add a sauce to his meat and perhaps something other on his plate so that worked just fine.

A month later I weighed in and was 8 pounds lighter! Wow, never felt it or realized it so bought another month of food.

This month we also went out for a couple meals and I chose salads with lo cal dressing and skipped breads, and stealing my DH's french fries. However at the end of the 2nd month I had lost 15 pounds! My clothes were loose some too loose...

My daughter found the same results... so we both took on a third month. Eating out more but watching what I ordered. I usually put it in the dinner category and ordered meat and salad.

I guess we followed it closely for about 5 months and I lost 37 pounds. I was at my BMI, and also at a weight I was at in my 40's. I was wearing size 10 (from some XL). and felt great. Never got sick. Note that we were not allowed any fruit, home made casseroles or bread in the diet which I missed.

After achieving the goal weight I went on maintenance by adding some fruit and bread. Also, some sauces for meat.

Since then, I've more or less followed the 6, 100 cal. meals a day. Never hungry on that. But, while traveling I give up and eat what is available and the calorie count is twice what it was on the diet. That is the only time I've gained and we take at least 2 months a year on road trips.

Now I'm up 12 pounds from when I dieted and want to lose it, but do not have the goals I had then. I keep adding snacks, cookies, food sampling while I'm cooking, combinations foods (spaghetti, casseroles or homemade soups etc. ) I know what to do now that I lost it, but as long as I know ...I mentally tell myself I'll do it again - later...

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

Susan, it's so funny for me to watch I Love Lucy and see their tiny coffee/tea cups for breakfast and now we walk around with mugs. LOL

Jackie, what was it that finally worked for you to lose weight?

Until I was about 40, I couldn't gain weight. I was skinny with skinny arms and could eat anything. The surprise was when I gained a few pounds and no worries... It'll come off without me dieting... HA. I didn't know how to diet or not eat everything I wanted to...that was the beginning of weight gain but only about 20 pounds which I needed ...after the kids were grown I had the second spur and gained to be over my BMI with no knowledge to get it off.

I had a minor in nutrition and was a dietitian in my work, but no idea how to manage my losing weight. It took awhile but I lost 37 pounds when I was 77yr old so it took that much time to learn...I'm trying to lose another 10 now that was mostly regained during 3 years after I lost...so it is yo-you for me now.

That good fiber gets rid of the 'starving' feeling I've felt all my life. I could eat a perfectly full meal, and feel 'starved' just a couple hours later. And that fiber got rid of the grouchiness that went along with the hunger.

That , and just how small portion sizes really are. It's almost like there's no point to a sit-down family meal....that's kind of sad to me.

MaryAlice, thank you for sharing. I got the question a lot when I leaned vegan, "how do you get your protein?" It was an argument I had often with my son's cub scout leader. sigh. Our bread had 9 g per serving.
I've heard in a few places it's believed American's eat too much protein.

The first thing was, about 20 years before I joined the Dr said my body could no longer digest meat. I started reading vegetarian magazines to find out what I should be eating. They all said protein was over rated and I only needed about 1/3 of what people thought you needed. I didn't know better and didn't worry about protein. I gain weight, lots of weight. When I joined SP I put my food in the tracker the first day and discovered I was eating way too much fat and not near enough protein. I adjusted the protein and fat. I no longer was always hungry, The weight started coming off and I felt better
