I am having a positive, upbeat feeling today towards my goal of organizing 'that room' today.
I had said that 2018's word for me was going to be 'INTENTIONAL'.
In that, I also mean, DECISIVE, DELIBERATE, FOCUSED on small achievements, and proceeding, progressing, and advancing.

One word I will DELETE this year is PROCRASTINATION.

Nothing is fearful, if taken in smaller controlled steps. Right? And how AWESOME I'm going to feel when I become a well-ordered home-maker.

And we all lived happily ever after...

After talking to my husband I have one more suggestion for getting over the anxiety. Make a new list of things you have already accomplished. It doesn't have to be long or a new one every day, but something simple. Yesterday I washed all my cpap stuff - water tub, mask, air hose, etc. and also reset the dining room, taking the extra leaf out of the table and rearranging the furniture to how I usually keep it. Today so far I have washed up the pots and pans from the last couple days (I hate doing dishes and just soak them right after use) and I also started a couple loads of laundry. The day before I thoroughly dusted and vacuumed our bedroom, also cleaned up leaves in the yard. It helps focus on the positive and see where you really have made progress.

Good luck!

Carol

OH, how encouraging your replies are :) I could sing for joy and for the new year but would do it in solitude because I can't carry a tune any more :)

It is a new day, a new year and a new time in my life! whoopee! emoticon

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

Jackie, you make me smile and give me hope for my future. Please don't be so hard on yourself. As we get older we keep trying to do all the things we did when we were so many years younger. None of us really want to admit we are "older" and that we just don't move as fast as we used to so we can't accomplish as much as we used to. Sometimes it seems hard to remember, but mostly I think we just need to make sure our expectations are realistic. Remember the old saying about making lemonade out of lemons? Working on that To Do list means we are alive and functioning; if we ever finished that list (including the books and the bridge) we would have to create another one to set new directions for ourselves.

Regarding your DH: when we are retired and essentially spend 24/7 with another person life can become a special challenge. Best wishes - I'm sure you'll find a way to deal with him.

Well CHEER UP! At 81 you've got the experience to know that our list is always added to. Just continue what you ARE doing and then complete one thing from your 'backed-up' list and one from your hubby's!

And consider something that I just read:
“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”

Kind of doubt that this is true, but still, there must be SOMETHING to it.

Keep active!

And we all lived happily ever after...

I can't believe how little I seem to accomplish ...I don't work now (I'm 81), for the last 3 months our daughter lived with us (an evacuee from Puerto Rico) and did all the shopping, cooking and much of the housework... But, my desk is still a clutter...and what I want to accomplish and what my DH thinks I should accomplish don't match.

Year end book-work needs to be done, taxes (or work to report them) ahead, answer 3 wrong charges on cc or other statements, water the plants, a few things I need to shop for... just a beginning of a simple list but it never ends, if I finish one project 2 more seem to be added to it ... I always know none of it is really important, but it is to me...

I do play bridge at least 2 times a week, always have a novel or 2 started, confer with my 5 adult children weekly, and answer most of my Sparks messages :)

I agree with Carol.

I had a overwhelming 2017. I had to take one thing at a time and sometimes other things jumped to priority but a just plugged along. I'm trying not to take on more projects. I found I take on more to delay the things that I'm stressing about. emoticon
I need to move forward with the things already there....and quit procrastinating!

Happy New Year! Let it be a good one!

Carol, you're just a wealth of wisdom today. emoticon In 2016 I had two panic attacks. That was new to me. The triggers were stupid; spackle at Lowe's, and bread at the grocery store. But it was just a quick series of everything that needed to be done and those were the things I was after at the moment. I had to contain my speeding thoughts and I haven't had another panic attack sense; two was more than enough. They were minor too, so I feel compassion for those who have hard core attacks.
I'm in an older home and there are a TON of things that need fixing/updating and I have to take it one room at a time or one thing; like door knobs/handles, at a time.
Anyone causing drama in my life gets put in time out and this has been extremely helpful as well.

Thanks, Carol!

I've never been a competitive, 'accomplish goals' kind of gal. That's just not my personality. I'm pretty laid back, and a lot of my work is done at the last minute, as if I like the 'high' of a good panic. lol

But I would like to learn to be very intentional in these areas. Housework, decluttering, etc.

And we all lived happily ever after...

To SUSANSKI

That feeling often comes to me when I look at my house and my life - all the separate, independent requirements of living from one day to the next. I don't have an ultimate solution, but I do find it helpful to simply pick one thing to focus on and do it. All the other things are still waiting, but having one thing accomplished helps clear my head. Then I can pick one more and do it. Maybe not the same day, but one thing at a time.

Perhaps this will help you, and then again, perhaps not. But I thought I'd toss it out there. Best wishes to you.

Here is the biggest thought that I would like to rid myself of:
"I am overwhelmed."

This feeling is in regard to things I need to complete, not about life in general. If I can conquer this, whoa...look out baby!

I like to take walks in the dark. It seams all the stuff I have collected in my head during the day leaves. There isn't a void, but there is a feeling of peace and well being.

You are correct - everything begins with our thoughts - and our beliefs and assumptions that come from them. Contrary to popular opinion, our emotions come afterward and not first. At the same time, there is an old saying that "Nature abhors a void." So we can't just get rid of bad old ones; we have to find good ones and insert them into our thinking too.

Let's start where it begins.... our thoughts.
This week if you have thoughts that are not allowing progress, get rid of them. We need to declutter our minds to move forward.

Cheers to a new year, new goals, and success!
