This makes me remember when a co-worker of mine would chew junk food, but not swallow; she'd spit it out. I thought that was really odd and perhaps an eating disorder? I think this was around the time she started eating baby food. So yeah, I thought for sure an eating disorder.

I have heard that about one bite is enough to satisfy before. I don't know if I have heard that it doesn't taste as good after the 3rd bite. It does to me in most cases, though I have had some cookies and cake that didn't taste good after the first few bites.

I just watched a video last night where this actress worked in a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger before he made it big and it was lunch time and she ate a bite of a sundae. Then she went to take another bite and he asked, you're going to take a second bite?
She responded with, well yeah, I was planning on eating it.
LOL
He said, one bite is all you need, any more than that is indulgence.

huh. That's an interesting way of looking at it. years ago I read in a book about a French woman who said after the third bite it doesn't taste as good and we should stop after three bites.

Has anyone else heard this?

I need the deep breathing for the stress. It would be better for me than the usual -- eating ice cream.

wow, that is low FANCY. Yeah, it doesn't sound like you need to do any deep breathing. ;-)

Oh, Man, I forgot about this. I would say that deep breathing will calm me down and help me relax. I'm afraid if it slows my heart rate I might be in trouble, though. It is normally in the low 50s. That is great that you got your heart rate down and all.

I didn't do the deep breathing daily, but on the days I did, I noticed a significant decrease in heart beats per minute; as much as 20-30 bpm. I think this is good. Oddly, Christmas and the day after were unexpectedly stressful and my resting heart rate was in the 90's. Stressed? LOL

Wow, MaryAlice, that was a scary one. I'm glad that everything turned out okay.

I think I have tried the controlled breathing often when I was afraid my IBS was going to hit. I know I was doing something like that to calm down. Most times I will also listen to Christian music. Even before I knew where there were stations on the radio that played it, when I was upset I would put on a tape or CD with Christian music. I realized I was doing that after my Mom passed away and didn't really know why that is what I turned to. Unfortunately, the other thing I do is eat.

To calm down. I was driving. I had my best friend, her daughter and my daughter, the girls were 6, in the car. We were all in the ambulance together because there was glass in my daughters eyes and they thought my friend had a broke neck. Her daughter and I had minor injuries. My daughter was freaking because she couldn't see and they wouldn't let her touch her eyes, My friends daughter was freaking because her mother was there and breathing, but strapped to a stretcher and had no idea what was going on. I was trying to get a hold of myself, to be there for the girls.

No worries MaryAlice. So glad to hear your daughter is now 40 and made it through the car accident. May I ask, why were you counting the breathing?

Sometimes just a couple of deep breaths are enough to settle me down. I'd never get through two minutes.

Sorry I can't join you in this. I have been doing controlled breathing for so long. I remember after a car accident, I thought me 9 year old was blinded in the accident. I was trying to get my heart rate under control and doing controlled breathing, what I didn't know was an EMT was watching me counting my breathing. He finally realized what I was doing and asked that I breath normal for 2 minutes. My daughter is 40 now.

So many people feel stressed or depressed this time of year. Let's concentrate on the things that are important so our thoughts don't spin out of control causing more stress/depression.

How can we do that? Take two minutes out of your day to lower your heart rate and concentrate on your breathing. Just two minutes, but it is harder than it sounds. I'm curious to know how you feel at the beginning of the week though and how you feel at the end of the week if you try this.

If you don't want to try the two minutes, do what you know works for you to destress and please share.

Merry Christmas eve~
