Sorry your Dr. was so unhelpful, but you've gotten terrific advice. Print it out and use it.

That doctor isn't very helpful. Ask for a referral to a diabetes educator.

Check with your insurance company to find out what diabetes tools are covered, most will cover education, testing supplies, etc.

If your insurance company has a nurse helpline, and your doctor doesn't give you the information you need, call the helpline.

It's hard to manage diabetes on your own if you don't have basic information.

It's up to you to ask for what you need.

One thing you can do right away is to use the Diabetes Plan here on Sparkpeople.

Click on "My Trackers" at the top of the page.

Then, click on "My Nutrition" and then on "My Settings" - you can select one of the Spark*D Diabetes Management plans. It will help you to plan out your eating.

You can also get information on diabetes from the American Diabetes Association website.

www.diabetes.org

Click on "Newly Diagnosed" to get started.
