I think diabetes, as referenced today, refers more to the Pancreas / Insulin connection, i.e. the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the pancreas produces insulin but the body cannot utilize it properly.... I don't think it refers to the WHY of it.....

Formerly, there was Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational. There is also now a Type 2 in children and adolescents which has it's own category (but I forget what it is called....) I have not heard of any further breakdowns as to the "types" of diabetes, or as to the source of diabetes.

Looks like I have reading to do.... I will be checking out that link. Thanks, Pat

I am glad that I found this thread....

I haven't heard of type 1.5 either. I suppose you can google it. I guess my question would be if this is coming from your family dr or a dr that specializes in diabetes. If it was your family dr. I would see a specialist.

Hi all! so i am new to this group, so you all may understand where i am coming from. So i am a type 1. I have been so for 11 years now. i am a pump user for 6 years now. so here is where this is the part i hope some or all understand. My doctor has me on the pump... metphormin AND invokana, ( which is wonderful btw)... anywho.. here is where the frustration begins... she says that i am not 100% totally symptomatic of a type 1 but i am not 100% symptomatic of a type 2, she says that i am in the middle and a "special" type of diabetic that is new to the medical field. She reffered to me as a type 1.5.. Is this thing for real? i mean i am using medication that both type 1 and 2's use. But it is a happy combo, i mean my a1c came down from a 10 to a 8.5 so wahooo! but i am just confused and frustrated with her because she says that she can not fully explain the type 1.5.. my thing is like i mentioned before.. is this thing real? or is she just confused as hell and is trying what she can to see what works?

JeffJapan, I was just diagnosed as Type II diabetes on Dec 29th, I met with the Diabetes Educator last week. She thought I might have LADA which is Latent Autoimmune Diabetes Adult. I guess it is a form of Type I that comes on much later in life. I am 50. The endocrinologist says no I am just Type II. I think that they simplify it to signify if the pancreas is working but not well (type II) or not working at all (type I) just so they know how to treat it. Type I always has to have insulin and Type II has other ways to treat (just diet and exercise, diet and exercise and pills, diet and exercise and insulin). I think that the underlying cause can be a result of many things such as DNA, family history, lifestyle, other disorders etc. I am not saying that doing it that way is necessarily the right way but as a former healthcare worker, treating is the ultimate goal. I hope you get the answers you need. emoticon

There was a large amount of information on that site

I followed the MODY and there is a lot of info on it. I have no understanding of it I thought you would glean something from it since it refers to Mitochondrial dysfunction. It also talked about genetic c hange

On the UK site it described MODY it says it is about 1% to 2% of diabetics in UK.

It says it may be treated by insulin or tablets and is usually in young people.

Best I can do.

I hope you can listen to the video

Hope it helps Pat n Maine. emoticon

I was told Type 1, Type 2 and type 3 is gestational diabetes. I will have to look that up. I am type 2, but our diabetes educator said there are three. Take care Pat in Augusta Maine.
You might go to the experts and there is a Dr there who might give you the answer.

I've got MIDD(maternally inherited deafness and diabetes)caused by the same Mitochondria DNA mutation mtDNAA3243G aka Melas(Mitochondria encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke like episodes). i have insulin dependant diabetes caused by my Mitochondria disease which causes cellular energy deficiency. my diabetes is not caused by an autoimmune dysfunction. it seems to me that there are many more diffferent types of diabetes that all get labeled as type one and type two. Why is diabetes so simply Labeled? how many types of diabetes are there? i'd like to know the truth.
