K,

You've got this. I've been there. My sugars were 450-500 and my A1C was like 11 - 13. It's now 5.5. This is an overwhelming process. The key word being process. Start with making small changes one at a time. So these changes become changes of a lifetime. So glad you are starting this process. Everyone's body is different. I found eliminating processed foods and controlling my carbs helped me tremoudously. I also started walking. Small steps.

So glad your here.

Well my A1C tests result is back and it was 8.9 :( But I am determined to lower it!

Last night before bed my BS was 131, the lowest I have tested it so far. My FBS this morning was 144.

I realized though that I take the abilify at night right before bed & the doctor said it may raise my BS so that might be why my morning numbers are higher.

152 is so much better than 214. That is a huge difference. emoticon

Now you can work on getting them even lower.....

I appreciate everyone to this thread. I had much the same questions since I had just been diagnosed as Type 2. The FBS test at the lab was 300 and my A1C was 11. I've been on metformin a week now. Definitely helping. Thanks!

This morning I tested as soon as I woke up & didn't use alcohol. It was 152, which while still high is way way lower then it was so yay.

Thank you guys a bunch that was really helpful :) I will start testing at night as well to see if I notice anything.

Yes, it makes a difference if you don't test when you get up. As Pat says, wash your hands, dry them and then test.

When you get busy doing other things, even taking the dog out potty and feeding your cats, your liver thinks you are going to require the body to do things without fuel, so it pushes out glucose. Even just a little bit of glucose can elevate the BS readings.

BTW, do you test before going to bed. I am just wondering if you have a little of the "Dawn Phenomena" going on as part of the reason why your morning numbers are so high. If you don't already test at bed time, try it for a week or so and see if the numbers go way up by morning.....

It is old school to use alcohol wipes on the test site. That is how I was taught as well. But there are a couple of reasons why it is not a good idea.

One: Some people do not wait for the test area to dry
Two: Alcohol has a tendency to dry the skin and can lead to complications down the road. Google it and see what you come up with....

Thanks everyone.

Now that I am taking metformin it has started going down slowly each day. This morning my fasting BS was 214. Still too high but...getting lower.

I do not test the second I wake up. Does that matter? I usually wake up, go potty, take the dog outside to potty, feed my cats then sit down and test. I haven't eaten or had anything to drink yet.

I do use alcohol wipes on my finger too. That is the way the doctor showed me. hmm

Why I went off my meds/quit seeing the doctor is a long story. But depression, anxiety & being bipolar pretty much sums it up lol. I was taken off insulin & it threw a kink in my routine, i started forgetting to take my pills sometimes. My doctor moved out of the city & I was nervous about a new doctor, etc... What matters now is that I am back and seeing a doctor and going to do this right!

The metformin is making me feel abit nauseous. Not fun. But its just the first week on it, hopefully that gets better. But no way I can work out, everytime I move I feel like I will throw up lol. So so not fun. I also have much less of an appetite feeling like this so lol

I am going to start using the nutrition tracker again. I went shopping yesterday and bought tons of healthy stuff, eggs, salads, veggies and fruit. And gave up soda. So drinking way more water now.

Are you just getting out of bed to test you FBS. I was told and still do this after 5 years.
Get out of bed and wash your hands. I was told not to use alcohol on my test site.
I dry my hands on a clean wash cloth.
I stick my test site.
Get a drop of blood but it is wiped away on the corner of a paper towel.
Gently press out some blood not a tight press just get a drop to flow and TEST.

Testing is very important even for the rest of the day do it EXACTLY how your Dr, or Diabetic Educator tells you.
TEST the same way each time.
ONLY doing it right and on time is the most reliable way.
ALWAYS RECORD YOUR NUMBERS. Does your Glucometer have a 30 day memory.
You can do it. Record your numbers on a diabetic site and others will be watching.

ECKOKITTEN,
Like PYNETREE wrote, track everything you eat and drink. My tracking looks like this:

Broccoli (1/2 cup, 44 grams)
Calories (15)
Carbs (1.8 g)
Fat (0.2 g)
Protein (1.2 g)

I only buy/eat things that are 6 grams carbs per 100 grams, or less.

James

OK , that is done - new day, renewed effort.
Start to test as soon as you wake in the morning - FBG. Your morning blood glucose reading gives you an idea of whether you can go high carb with a bagel, or have a lower carb egg breakfast.
Track everything you eat or drink. Note also what you are doing, how you feel, what stress, medications, exercise that you get, any water or drinks.
Have you tried the Nutrition Tracker here on SPARK? For me, it is invaluable! If you test before some meals, and 2-3 hrs. after, and that will give you a great idea of how your body is handling your diabetes.
You have to get back in control. You can do this. emoticon

OK, don't beat yourself up about it. Consider it one of life's lessons. Make and tack sticky notes on the fridge, in your lunch bags, on the table where you sit to eat, bathroom mirror, and any other place you can think of to remind yourself to test.

We have a thread for fasting blood sugars. Post there every day and as someone else said, watch the correlation of blood sugars to what you have eaten.....

Check back and post often, and let us know how you are doing. We are here for you.....

Yikes! but why did you quit monitoring yourself when you went off insulin, unless I read that wrong. Being at good numbers and taken of meds, doesn't mean quit monitoring.

Keep monitoring your sugar, what you eat...which is something I need to start doing. Go back to a diabetic counselor/educator. Get back to exercising if you can do that. Drink your water. I could go on....

First of all, YIKES! Please take care of yourself! Go more often to the Dr. It's really important (and I know you know that!)

AS for the Abilify and the Prozac, yes, they DO sometimes raise blood sugars. But that's all the more reason to test, test, test.

Have you seen a diabetic educator? Gotta get the information you need to take care of yourself.

Testing . . . initially I did it at least 4 times/day. I kept a food journal so I could correlate what I ate with my blood sugars. That way I could have some idea of what food(s) worked . . . or not.

Get in the habit of tracking here! Very important.

Glad you're here, but TAKE CARE OF YOU!

Love is the root of all things good in life.

I could really use some support! I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2009. I did really good during that time. Jan that year my A1C was 11..by May it was down to 5.7. I was taken off insulin. I had lost weight and was doing beautifully. Then everything went to hell.

Yesterday, I finally got the courage to go to the doctor. Yay me!

I got blood work so I do not know what my A1C is yet, but I am sure its not good.

I tested my blood sugar first thing this morning before I ate. This was the first time I have tested since prob 2009-2010. I was nervous lol. My blood sugar was 270! That is sooo not good.

I am on metformin 500mg, twice a day. I just started today. But I am also taking abilify & prozac now, and abilify says it can cause weight gain & higher blood sugars. I just started taking them today too. So that is meh lol

How often do you test your BS? I believe last time I was checking once-twice a day. My doctor didn't tell me, just to monitor because of the metformin & the abilify to keep an eye on how it is affecting me.

I am starting to eat better today and exercise. I just want to be healthy.
