I ran/walked Pat's Run and that was my first race outside and I loved it. It is different than the treadmill, which I have been using for about six or seven months. I don't think anything beats the great feeling of running outdoors versus whatever you're stuck looking at inside running on the treadmill. Plus, the terrain is different which seems to give me a challenge which I love. I'm looking forward to running some 5K's through the year and that makes me so excited so I know how excited you are. Good luck with your first race. You'll do great and you'll love every second of it. Make sure you come back and let us know how you did!

Nothing like a good run outside, you can smell all the clean air! I like the sounds, smells and feeling of being outside. If I go at the right time I can tell what my neighbors are grilling for supper.

You will definitely be slower outdoors. It's not because of the terrain however. When you are setting your own pace, you go faster and slower at points, instead of the even pace of a treadmill. I can't imagine why you would only do treadmill running before a race though. It's not the same, and doesn't accurately prepare you for much.

Outside is different, but don't forget you'll also have the other runners surrounding you and that always gives me an energy boost. Enjoy the run :)

You will probably be slower. Try an incline of 10% to help with adjustment. Runner's world has an article in the current issue about treadmill to outdoor running

Best of luck with the 5k

i did this just a few weeks ago. I felt it to be more difficult for a couple different reasons. First of all it was HOT outside so my breathing was different. The trail was up and down hill and not a smooth surface.

I actually made great time and was so proud that i finished! You will be fine, just remember that the time doesnt matter, it is your first one and next time you can beat it!

treadmill running is quite different than outdoor running, but there is no way to determine how you will respond to the differences and to your first race!
don't worry about your time and just have fun!
