Bravo, Pat! I think one of the reasons I got into running was because it was hard for me and I wanted a challenge. It's still hard, and I also don't get runner's high during short runs. My first runner's high was during my a half-marathon at about the 11th mile. It was so extraordinary that I became hooked and finally understood what all the effort was for. Guess that's my way of saying - keep at it, however rare the high, it's natural and absolutely worth the price.

I am running to lose weight and hopefully reduce stress. I don't find running easy so it is a boost to my self-esteem when I finish a long-run. I did 8.5 miles last night - I am training for a 10 mile run in May. I have yet to experience a "Runner's High." Hopefully, I will at least experience it when I do the race in May.

I don't really have a lot to loose overall, but it does seem like I'm not really "loosing" any weight. However, I am noticing that my clothes fit different, and I LOOK different...methinks that the extra weight is slowly turning into muscle, because I've only lost 2 pounds since January.

But I agree with D'Queen...the mental hurdle is def. the hardest part, at least for me.

Just keep running!

Thanks for the congrats. It's a weird WEIRD feeling after a lifetime of always being somewhere between 5 and 40 pounds overweight. I would enjoy it a whole lot more if I actually looked in the mirror and believed I didn't need to lose anymore weight (which says more about my mental health than anything - LOL)

BUT I'm WORKING ON IT.

Well, congratulations, D'Queen, on reaching your goal weight. :)

Wow, don't we all wish for a nurse/doctor to admonish us for being UNDERweight?!

Still trying to figure this one out. At my health screening yesterday the nurse told me I was underweight for my age. I thought I needed to lose 7 more pounds, so go figure! Right now I'm trying to shift my perspective to running for the pure bliss of running and maintaining my current fitness level (and weight?).

Lately I've been running to lose weight and it has worked ... but only in combination with watching my calories. Thank goodness for sparkpeople!!

I am running to maintain now. I cannot figure this one out. I ran to lose weight, but somewhere along the way there are diminishing returns. I was at my original goal of 120 pounds when I started marathon training last summer. Over the 4 months of training and then the recovery, I put on about 5 pounds. Even now that my mileage is back up, the weight is still there. I don't know for sure that it's fat, so I decided not to worry too much. At this point I am blaming the fact that I reduced my strength traning just before the marathon and never really picked it up again. So I started back today.

I dropped 65 lbs and have been maintaing for nearly 2 years now. The bike is what I lost the weight with, but the running helps shake things up with a different activity. I enjoy it and the simplicity of it.. its a little easier and quicker to get out the door to go for a run than it is to get the gear together and the bike and then get out the door.

I'm losing weight. Running has never helped me lose weight but it has helped me not gain weight if that makes sense. To lose weight, I think you actually have to address your calorie intake (thank you SparkPeople). I've been surprised about mine because I do eat pretty healthy but I've only just realized that it still doesn't mean I can eat all I want.

I am trying to LOSE WEIGHT. I started running 4-5 years ago. I am running in my first 1/2 marathon on April 19th. I have fazes with my running depending on work and time of year (gardening, vacation etc.) Right now, I run about 3-4 times a week with one of them being my long run. I have weighed myself all winter and I wasn't losing any weight. I have about 10 lbs to lose. Then I went shopping with a friend and it turns out that I have gone from a size 8 to a size 6 in the same pants that I have bought before. YEA!!!

I'm maintaining and have been since October!!! I have dropped my maintenance range several times since then!!! My original goal was 145 but I am now 120...my lowest was 117.5!!!

Since I started seriously running I have gained 1.5 pounds...most have suggested I am gaining muscle!!! Either way I feel great and love running!!!

I'm running to shed pounds...but it seems like I am just maintaining. In a different forum I posted a "Running and Losing Weight" thread. I am definitely getting in shape, but the weight does not seem to be coming off as fast as I had thought it would. Since January, I have lost 5 lbs, but that weight came off within the first month and now I have just plateaued and maintained since then. I'm hoping to just hang in there, and the weight will slowly melt away....one run at a time.

2010 Goals:
1. Free State Trail Marathon - April 24, 2010 - Done!
2. Fall Marathon - TBA
3. 125 lbs by December 31, 2010

Sound off..... A show of "hands" for those who are MAINTAINING.... and those who are SHEDDING POUNDS....

I am in maintenance mode.... yet the pounds do inadvertantly tend to come off from time to time.. Trying to find the proper balance of "calories in/calories out"..... Haven't quite got to the point where I have it all figured out! I'm a work in progress...

How 'bout you? Are you a maintainer or 'loser'... you know what I mean... hee hee... Are ya running to keep the pounds off... or to drop even more? Hmmm...

Let's chat... give a shout out... which are you? and how's it working out for you?
