I joined this team just so I can give my two cents.

I used to run because I figured I should. I have two perfectly working legs and am in good enough health that I thought I should run. That was ten years ago. Up until recently I have hated running. Through every 5k, half marathon, and marathon I really hated the act of running but loved how I felt after I was done. So I did it. This winter I finish a book called "Born to Run" and it changed how I look at running. Now I run because I was truly born to run and I now find joy in my running. If you haven't read this book you must. I will make your running joyful.

I run because if I walk the cops will catch me.

Actually I started running because it took too long to walk our new puppy. That was 25 years ago. Magic has long crossed over, but I am still running.

I find it to be a great stress buster. After a day on the job, especially in these tough economic times when most of the days news is so negative, nothing beats a run to help clear my thoughts.

I run for me, for life, for the high. I run because I am transformed. I run because I am returned to myself through the action; I become more of who I am inside and less what the world around pins on me.

I run because I love it!

i love the feeling i get when i get started, while i'm at it and the runner's high afterwards. i love the way it defines my body afterwards and i feel i breathe better and feel my body gets an overall cardio workout. "i feel it all!" as feist sings. i love that i can sightsee and notice God's beauty outside while running. i love that i can meditate on His beauty, too. i also love praying and running, too, satisfying the multi-tasker in me.

Burns lots of calories, great way to build endurance, and gets me outside, even in the winter(depending on the weather, snow and ice). Find I can do more then and keep up with much younger people.

Well, I started to run because I gained 60 lbs with my son and before I became pregnant I had already gained 15. At the time I was embarrassed with the way I looked and it was something meditative (just me, my runners, my music and the open road) that I could do in the evening times when my kids went to bed. Then, my motivation became contagious and even my mother decided she could do it and started running with me. Now, I run because I feel great when I am done! The meditative effect is even more important me to now because I work 5 days per week and have 3 kids! No one can catch me..... :)

I started running after I started Spark. I would read threads like this one and admire the folks writing about races and runs that they had just completed. I thought "self - you can sit back and wish you were one of them or you could do something about it and join them."

I choose "join". While I still greatly admire people who write with great passion about completing 10Ks, 15Ks, halfs and fulls and think "self - those people are amazing". I can now feel like I'm a part of it - in my own small way.

I run because -
I like thinking about how my muscles feel while I'm doing it.
I feel great about myself after a run.
It's teaching me discipline.
It tests my resolve.
My daughter and I do it together, and I love that.
And this might be a little shallow but I think my husband thinks it's sexy and I kind of like that.(hee-hee-hee)

I am re-posting this from a blog I wrote a while back.

When you are out on a long run there is a lot of time to think. Lately I have been thinking about what makes me run. What is it that makes me get out of bed 3 hours before the sun comes up to run in the dark for 2 hours? It doesn't really matter what the conditions are I still go. Hot and humid? I'm out there. Cold and rainy. There too. I even pay money to run in races that I know I don't have a chance of winning. Why do we as runners do what others would see as torture?
Well as I said I have been thinking about it and have come to the conclusion that there are many different things and that they are constantly changing. I first started running with one purpose in mind, to be healthy. I was severely overweight with high cholesterol and a history of heart disease in my family. So I started running. At the time my son was 4 years old and I started realizing that he needed me to be healthy. Pretty soon, I needed more motivation. I started running races to help me stay on track and keep improving. I ran 5Ks, 10Ks and then finally a marathon.

Then one day I woke and realized that I loved running. I was addicted. Nobody had to talk me into running anymore. I wanted to run. I needed to run. I started looking for new places to run. Everytime I went somewhere I would take my shoes so I could run. Last summer our family took a road trip vacation that took through 4 states. I ran in 3 of them. For the first time in my life I enjoy shooping for new clothes. Running gear of course.

I understand when people say I am crazy because 4 years ago I would have said I was crazy. But I love it. I love being healthy. I love that I started eating better because of it. I love the way it makes me feel mentally, physically and even spiritually. I love that my family gets up before 7:00 AM on the day of the marathon to cheer me on when they could easily stay in bed and when my 8 year old says the best thing about our trip was watching me cross the finish line. I love that when I go visit my younger brother that he wants to run with me so he can show off his running route. I love the emotions I felt when the gun went off at the start of my marathon. To know that I had gotten to the starting line and hadn't quit. I love it!

Why do I run?

Because I love it!

James

Why?,.,,
Well as a 315 lb smoker how else was I going to see significant enough progress to keep working towards not only loose weight but to quit smoking.... RUN!

So that's what I did, do, um- did.... do and still do!

After all when was the last time you saw a fat runner flying down the side of the road with a cigarette in his mouth?

Yeah didn't think so, well can't say that I have kicked the smokes (God help me!) but I am down to about a pack a week from a pack a day!

Also down a total of 41 lbs and I am COMPLETELY hooked on running.

So I jumped on that first time... I was a dead man... oh crap what was I thinking! this is stupid...cough, cough, cough!

I DID survive that 12 minute stint... in fact I kept pushing and pushing until I was up to 18min, then 22min, then 30min, then 45min and finally now I am running 5 miles in an hour comfortably.

I have successfully completed 2 5K's in a couple months(Thank you god) both under 32:00 and am VERY nervously considering a 15K in three weeks in Chicago.

My fantasy is the Chicago marathon 2009...

Either way I owe myself an hour tomorrow morning and honestly can't wait!
after all the ankle sprains, back pain a constant fatigue passed.

...care more than others think is wise;
...risk more than others think is safe;
...dream more than others think is practical;
...expect more than others think is possible."

Welcome, Sandy!

I did the Couch to 5K too. Before that I'd never had any luck with jogging because I tried to do too much too soon and would get frustrated. Now I just got back from a one hour run. :)

I am a new runner and I just found this team. You gals are awesome! I would love to "tell my story".

Back in March of 2008 I was walking on my treadmill and trying to loose weight. I started slowly jogging intervals because I could burn more calories in less time than walking. I discovered that I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment when I was done. I found a message board post talking about the Couch to 5k program....did some reading and decided to give it a try. I was hooked! I am not a fast runner ..... I am not a great runner..... but I can do it and I feel fantastic when I am done running.

Now I run because...

I want to improve my 5k time.
it clears my head and allows me to escape.
I want to be healthy and continue to loose weight.
I want to be a positive healthy example for my kids.
I like to eat fun "unhealthy" things.
I work a sedentary job and feel lazy.
I like the changes it has made to my body.
it makes me feel in control of my life.
I dont need a gym membership to do it.
I feel good when I receive compliments from friends.
I have inspired other people to do the same.
I for me, because I can!

I started running because I teach marching band and a world-class indoor drumline in my spare time, and riding a desk/living on takeout led to so much weight gain, I couldn't even keep up with the fat kids.

I kept running because it's how I burn stress without drinking and is my only "me" time on some days.

I run because it burns more calories than walking.

I like running and walking because I like being outside, I like moving, I like being alone with my thoughts. Also they're cheap and don't require the effort of going to the gym.

My Mom died when she was only 52 from cancer and it has a high impact on why I exercise as well.
I think that what I got the most from that tragedy was that life is truly what you make it and you alone are responsible for your health and well being.
Oh, and I am SURE that your Mom is VERY proud of you!

Good Afternoon Ladies!!!

This is a really difficult question for me to answer because I am not sure why I started running!!!

It seems like most everything I do lately is prompted by or related to my mother being diagnosed with and dying of colon cancer last year!!! She was only 62 when she died and needless to say it rocked my world!!! I think her passing showed me how short life really is and how if there is something you want to do, you need to just do it!!!

I didn't know running was one of those things until I tried to run and couldn't...or at least I thought I couldn't because I would get tired and side pains!!! I just thought I was incapable of running!!! But with the help of SP and reading posts from other ladies my age and older who were just starting out, I figured I would give it a try!!!

So while on vacation last November, we were staying at a resort that had a gym so I tried to run for just a few minutes taking into account all the tips I had read and found I COULD run and I like the way it felt!!! When we got back from vacation I joined a gym and have been running since!!!

I think I really got the bug when I watched the Los Angeles Marathon at the beginning of March!!! I signed up for and started training for my first 5K not long after!!! Its coming up 3 weeks from yesterday!!!

So I guess the answer to why I run....

To cross the finish line and make my mother proud
To prove to myself that I am stronger than I think I am
To do everything possible to insure my good health
To run the Los Angeles Marathon one day...maybe 2009!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Jackie!!! emoticon

I started running back in high school. My phys ed teacher felt sorry for me and how terrible I was at team sports soooo she said why don't you go run while we play basketball. So, I ran....and kept at it. Then I started karate....and running was a part of my training so I kept running. When I can go back to karate...I will still run because it helps me to keep everything in balance.
I keep running because....
I love a good runner's high!
I actually enjoy when I have physically drained myself!
I walk taller...and more confident!

I started running because:
-it was an affordable form or exercise
-to prove that I could do it mostly

When I was little I loved play running, but sustained running was always work. When I started the Couch to 5k program and I started glowing about how running made me feel, I had a friend tell me that he totally saw me as a runner. He'd seen me sprint around in a park at some picnic we had, and he said he'd never seen me so comfortable in my body. So, that leads to why I keep running:

-It makes me feel fantastic
-I feel energized
-I feel strong
-I feel relaxed
-I love my body when I'm running

Cruz4U,

I'm with you on this one. With this IT band strain ( as well as injuries in the past) I realize how much I would miss running if I could never do it again. Also, I am so much more grateful for the ability that God gave me. I am able to run- it's as simple as that! How much bettter does it get, huh?
I truly like running most of the time. It gives me strength, courage and motivation to stay strong with regards to other aspects of my life!

It doesn't feel like I've been running that long. And it doesn't feel like I'm 37 either, lol...
When I first started, it really was a struggle to go 2 miles-the distance for PT test....and now I'm getting the gumption up to train for a half marathon. How time flies.
Field Day, I think I was in 6th grade, was a very traumatic event that really worked wonders at keeping a shy quiet girl away from participating in sporting events. First, I tripped just out of the starting gate of the 50 yard dash and fell flat on my face, tearing up hands and knees...then I won 5th place of 5 in a longer running race. What fun, NOT. I was mortified...
Would have liked to play field hockey in high school but was too darn shy.
You've done really well with the C25K training and look at you now! We can do much if we just put our minds to it...

I like this one!

I started doing this thing called running 18 years ago because it was a requirement. I joined the National Guard and one of the requirements was to pass a PT test once a year. Mind you, I was NOT a sporty child/teen/young adult, lol... I hated it. After Basic Training, I couldn't stick with it. I spent a number of years NOT passing my PT test. No fun.

Fast Forward to today.

Now, I run to maintain my sanity, figure, cardio-endurance, fitness, confidence, youth. I am NOT a team player or competitor, so to speak, but find racing to be a great motivator for staying excited about one of the simplest forms of exercise and a way to consistently test myself and my inner strength. I absolutely love running.

I run to stay physically fit and lose weight.

I starting running because:
Everyone in my building runs!
The amazing teams at SP inspired me.
I wanted to show myself I had the stick-to-it-iveness it took!
I loved the idea of the alone time. :-)

Ok.. thought this might help inspire, motivate... or possibly refresh in our minds 'WHY WE RUN?'---
What on earth were we thinking, when we decided to pick up this habit? (uh, is that another thread? no... not what ARE you thinking WHEN you run, more or less what WERE you thinking when you decided to make the commitment to begin your running habit/adventure).... What prompted you in the first place?
hmmmm...
Puzzling-at times- to those non-runners, but to the avid runner.... there seems to be a reason for the "madness"... hee hee...
So... let's reconnect with that...
those warm, running days are ahead... so let's fill this thread with replies that inspire, refresh, renew, and confirm our commitment to RUN!

pls feel free to:
make it as serious as you want..
or as silly as you desire....
don't hold back.. hee hee.... let it rip!
Let's just run with it, ok?
hee hee....
