I have two favourite birthday stories. The first one is mine and the second one is my dad's.

The thing that I loved best about my birthdays when I was little was the way my mum arranged the presents. On the birthday morning, all of my presents were spread around the kitchen table in a rectangle and on the counters was a present for each of my sisters. I always loved that.

For my dad's 75th birthday, we decided to book a surprise weekend retreat for him. My 3rd youngest sister told him that A&W (she and her husband own a few) was having their annual conference at this resort in Muskoka the weekend before Thanksgiving (so the first weekend in October) and she wondered if he could come with them to watch her boys when they had to attend the meetings and he agreed.

So, the plan was set. The trickiest part was my youngest sister and her family as they share a house with my dad. They wanted to take their bicycles for the weekend so they stored them at our house (which is 3 doors down from theirs) and picked them up there.

My 3rd youngest sister and her family and my dad were the last to arrive. She had booked cabins for each family plus one for my dad. She had arranged with the staff that one of her sisters would collect the keys for all the cabins when whichever one of us arrived first.

My nephews and nieces were the scouts and had walkie talkies. When we got the word that they had arrived, we all crowded into his bedroom in his cabin (all 16 of us). And this is what he looked like as he arrived:

And, here are all of us:

It was a huge success and we had a wonderful weekend with excellent weather. Here are a couple more photos from the weekend:

I remember cakes my mother made for my sisters & I from a booklet called "Cut-Up Cakes." They were round or 9 x 13" cakes which were cut and assembled into animal shapes, then frosted and covered in tinted coconut. I had an elephant (my favorite animal), there was a fish with Life Savers for bubbles, etc.

Well, given that my birthday is next week I have already been thinking of this. It has to be the birthday party that my mom did for me in elementary school; it was a food fight! We had tons of popcorn (which the geese were all too happy to clean up after the fight). Each kid got a bag and we went at it. Even my big brother (seven years older than me) and his friends got in on the act! I have had some awesome birthdays and a few of the not so good ones. Keep 'em coming! Any birthday is better than no birthday!

What's your favorite birthday memory?

Does it have to be mine? Because the most memorable one is the gift I gave my husband for his birthday. We went on a hot air balloon ride. It was a wonderful time and we enjoyed the day immensely. One of the pics I used as my icon for awhile was from that day.

My friends and I are building wonderful memories this year and next year. Quite a few of us are turning 70. Last month we stayed overnight at a bed and breakfast in the country. We enjoyed wonderful meals, walks, and marathon mahjongg until midnight. This month, we had dinner at a local restaurant overlooking the water. One of our friends brought fresh caught halibut. More activities to come. We have celebrated 4 birthdays. More to come. Mine is next May. emoticon 70! emoticon
