Like Janis, I do all my gardening in pots. Currently I have some cherry tomatoes, lettuce, chives, rosemary, dill and thyme available to use. My parsley and oregano aren't doing that well this year. They didn't do well last year either. I think it's the cool nights.

However, Karen, the pots that I use for my gardens are all self-watering pots. They have a water reserve on the bottom of them and I just fill it up once a week and it's great.

Here's what the ones I use look like:

I have 4 of them. I bought two and my dad bought me two as a present. I grow my tomatoes, herbs, lettuce and onions in them. I've tried peas and strawberries but I didn't think the crop was big enough to warrant the peas and the strawberries were infested with potato bugs that I just couldn't get rid of.

Ok Janis, thank you. I'll google too, for my area, and see what works best, for next spring.

I used to have gardens but now just do containers because an old house burned down here and I haven't had the soil tested for lead.

I think most food crops and herbs like a lot of sun. The issue might be the space in container for roots. I think varieties bred to be small like "patio" in the name, or thumbelina carrots, for example, might do better than regular varieties.

We have grape tomatoes and Big Boy tomatoes coming, but are still green. I did a couple of containers of beets and another of spring mix lettuce. We got some lettuce before it went so we couldn't water it enough and I dug up all the beets because they didn't seem to be doing much and I was shocked that I got such measly looking beets, the biggest being about a dime size, the rest were hardly a size at all. Just little bulbs on the ends, so I think I'll give up container gardening. Maybe I shouldn't of had them in full sun, but that's how our garden always was, full sun. Any advice?

I have dozens of San Marzano tomatoes crawling towards ripe. I'm looking forward to making some great sauce!
