Another book from my library trip was Jill Churchill's "Fear of Frying" a Jane Jeffry mystery. I missed this one along the way. In this one Jane and her neighbor Shelly along with others from their town, are checking out a camp in Wisconsin as a possible place for a summer camp for the town's school kids. Very short, but good story development. Her books are always well-written and so was this one.

My pre-surgery library trip turned up a book in a series I had never read before. This was "Final Curtain" by R.T. Jordan, a Polly Pepper mystery. Polly is a somewhat over-the-hill aging former television superstar. Some of it was a little improbable, but a fast, fun read.

Finished "Scones & Bones" by Laura Childs the latest in the tea shop series set in Charleston. This was a little saccharine sweet with an unlikely story line about a skull cup. Fast read; avoid reading this if you are hungry. I did drink a lot of tea while I read this.

Also read "Aunt Dimity and the Next of Kin" by Nancy Atherton featuring transplanted American-in-England, Lori Shepherd. In this one Lori is feeling a little down and begins to volunteer as a visitor in a hospital. This book involves what happens after some brief visits with a patient. Lovely story development. Great descriptions of Oxford (where my daughter went). Good book.

Well, I have been doing a lot of reading between recuperating and the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee which has been dumping on us. I also have had very limited internet for several days because of the rain. So to catch up. Just finished "Silent Auction" by Jane K. Cleland, the latest in the Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery series. This one centers around the making and purchase of scrimshaw. Well-written, good story development. I also found the whole story line about how scrimshaw is made very interesting.

Mys, you're cracking me up emoticon with the number of books you're churning through.

Just finished English Tea Murder, the latest by Leslie Meier.

The 17th(!) in the Lucy Stone series, this has has Lucy and her gal-pals heading across the pond to London. After the professor leading her tour group dies in flight Lucy slowly begins to suspect maybe it wasn't caused by an asthma attack.

Love these characters but the plot, though probably really fun for the author to write, was pretty unbelievable. And I didn't count but I'm betting a good third of the book was nothing more than a travelogue about the big sightseeing destinations.

If you've read the entire series and know Lucy and her friends, its an okay book. Otherwise this isn't a book I could recommend.

Also finished "Evan Help Us" by Rhys Bowen a mystery set in Wales featuring police constable, Evan Evans. I seem to have missed this in the series so this was a nice treat. The relationships in a small town play out when a man returns to his hometown after many years. A good read and wonderful descriptions of Wales - someday I'll get there.

I've been doing lots and lots of reading because I am recuperating from foot surgery. Today it's pouring so I can't go out at all. Lots of reading. Read "Who's Sorry Now?" by Jill Churchill. This is another book in the Grace & Favor series set in the depression. This is a very cute series featuring sister and brother, Lily and Robert Brewster who are penniless until they receive an inheritance with strings attached. Set in a town on the Hudson River, this book tells a story about the mail and life in a small town between the World Wars. Wonderfully descriptive. Certainly a "cozy" mystery, but well-written.

MYSTERY4EVER - Wow! You sure had a busy weekend! If I read that much in one weekend I would go blind since I only see out of one eye anyway.

I just started another Joanne Fluke book called "Plum Pudding Murder". All her books are about her cookie business and she keeps coming across dead bodies in the delivery of her cookies and teaching her cooking classes. She includes lots of recipes in her books and some of the people here, and I, have been trying them out. It makes reading the book more fun. I usually like a mystery with a little more substance but right now, with all I am trying to get done around here, something light is better.

I also read, "Mrs. Jeffries Appeals the Verdict" by Emily Brightwell. This is a Victorian mystery featuring the household staff of a British police inspector. Mrs. Jeffries is his housekeeper and directs the staff behind the scene to help with his cases. Definitely a "cozy" mystery. One thing that is nice about these is that the order is not very important. Each stands on its own as a complete mystery. In this one, the staff helps to get a death sentence overturned.

This was a big reading weekend. Also read, "Cat Sitter Among the Pigeons" by Blaize Clement. This is the latest in the series featuring former cop, Dixie Hemingway, who now has a cat and dog pet sitting business. Well-written, logical flow of action, good character development when she encounters trouble at a new cat sitting client.

Also finished this weekend "Bones of a Feather" by Carolyn Haines. This is a Sarah Booth Delaney mystery set in Mississippi. This is the latest in this series where she and her partner, Tinkie, run a detective agency. This time they are investigating the disappearance of a necklace for an insurance claim in Natchez. Another good read in this series.

Just finished "Cat in an Ultramarine Scheme" by Carole Nelson Douglas - a Midnight Louie mystery. I discovered that I had missed this one when I got the most recent one. While this is a good story, it suffers from the problem that afflicts many of the last ones in this series. That is unless you have read all the prior ones, this one would make no sense. Not much of a mystery, but an advance in the story lines of this series. If you haven't read any of these, go back to the first ones first.

I just finished reading "Room" and it was sooo good!
About a girl who was kidnapped at age 19 and held in this room for 10 years! She has a child who is now 5 years old and she is still breasfeeding when they finally escape and the problems they have adjusting to their "outside" world. Well worth reading.

Just started Peter James latest novel "Dead Man's Grip" and it is a page turner. Read all of his previous novels and they were smashing.

I just finished "Darkness Peering" - which was excellent with a shocking ending and am now reading "Fudge Cupcake Murder" by Joanne Fluke. It's very light weight and has lots of recipes in it, but it's fun when you don't want to have to think too much.

Pampered to Death, the 10th "Jaine Austen" mystery by Laura Levine

First, it should be noted that the author was formerly a writer for such shows as Laverne & Shirley and Three's Company. The humor shines in her books. I especially appreciate the names she gives to the cat's food. And, to the author's credit, the humor does not overshadow the mystery.

In this book Jaine receives a gift of a vacation at a health spa. Sadly upon her arrival she discovers the stay will be more about deprivation than relaxation. When one of the guests is murdered detectives tell the guests they won't be leaving town until the investigation is complete. Jaine wants nothing more than to pack-up and leave, so she puts her "part-time, amateur private investigator" skills to work to find a killer among an ever increasing group of suspects.

The 4th installment in the Hannah Swensen series. Really enjoy this series. Wouldn't try any of the recipes because they can't be good for you but if you are looking for a good cozy mystery this is the series for you.

The Real Macaw, Donna Andrews' 13th in the Meg Langslow series
This series is known for its humor, emoticon more than some readers appreciate

When budget woes prompt the Mayor's repeal of the animal shelter's 'no kill' policy, a group of citizens "liberate" the shelter residents. When transportation planned for the animals doesn't show up, Meg's relatives volunteer her farm to house the rescued managerie.

They quickly learn that the transport driver did not show because he was murdered. But by whom? One of his many female conquests? A jealous husband? Or could it have something to do with town's money problems?

I love this series and this installment does not disappoint.

Hi Folks
Just joined today. I'm reading Faithful Place by Tanna French. It's a Police Procedral (my favorite type) Takes place in Dublin. The language in the book is wonderfully colorful and sooo Irish. The book is about an undercover cop, Frank Mackey. The suitcase belonging to Frank's first and only true love turns up 2 decades after everyone thought she had run off. French wraps you up in the turmoil of Frank's dysfunctional family and true to life dynamics of the Dublin slum that Frank called home. So far a truly awesome read.

I've always enjoyed JA Jance, especially her Joanna Brady books because they take place in the town where my mother was born. I just picked up her series with Allison Reynolds and have read 3 of them in the last week. (I'm 1/2 way through CRUEL INTENT)The protagonist is a former Fox newscaster who is let go because she's "too old". Her roots are in Sedona so that's where the majority of the action is, but locations also go to Phoenix, Flagstaff, Prescott, and the L.A. area. There's a little more blood than cozy mysteries but Jance has a good sense of humor and the books are fun reads.

Who Killed the Pinup Queen? by Toni L. Kelner

Tilda Harper is a freelance author specializing in magazine articles about celebrities long out of the spotlight. This second book in the "Where Are They Now" series finds her tracking down actors who had appeared in a 60's TV western series while also working on a story about pin-up queens from the 40's. After a murder and some stolen photos, Tilda may find the subjects of both stories are intertwined.

Maybe not excellent but above average cozy.

The second book I read today was "Scavengers" by Steven F. Havill featuring Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman. This is an earlier book that I had never read in the series. Extremely well written. It takes the earlier stories where she is a minor character and now features her. Action packed, but shows a real human side. The setting is a rural county in New Mexico where a body is found out on the desert. Good book as are the others that follow it.

Finished two books today. The first was "Fiber & Brimstone" by Laura Childs, a scrapbooking mystery set in New Orleans. I have read this whole series featuring Carmela Bertrand. This book was really forced. I had to force myself to finish it. I was glad it was a library book. The story revolves around Halloween events. There is little plot development and no character development. I kept wondering how this was about scrapbooking when he central character spent little time at her shop. There are some hints thrown in, but not the kind of writing evident in the earlier books.

Size 12 Is Not Fat by Meg Cabot

At 28, former teen-pop-star Heather Wells feels as though she has lost everything: her family and fortune (her mom fled the country with Heather's earnings), her recording contract, her slender waistline, and her fiance, Jordan, a philandering, boy-band singer. Then Jordan's brother, Cooper, a dreamy private investigator and family black sheep, offers Heather room and board in exchange for clerical work, and she finds an additional job as a residence-hall director at a nearby Greenwich Village university. After several female students turn up dead at the dorm, Heather takes on her own stealthy investigation and finds herself the target of the killer.

I am re-reading the entire Sue Grafton series, because I read them out of order the first time. I just finished F is for Fugitive. Kinsey Milhone is the best American detective out there.

Mr Monk on the Couch by Lee Goldberg

The 12th of the continuing Mr. Monk books, thankfully reverts back to a more plot driven story(as opposed to the previous Mr Monk on the Road that was more about the characters than a mystery).

This book revolves around a series of murders which seem unrelated but Mr. Monk sees as connected. But just how to prove it?

If you're a fan of the show, you'll likely love the book.
If you like cozy mysteries, you'll probably enjoy the book.
If you want something with grit and substance, you might want to look elsewhere.

The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson (6 out of 6 stars) - [2nd in the Millennium series] - it's really too bad he died because he's a very good read!

Lisbeth Salander is a wanted woman. Two Millennium journalists about to expose the truth about the sex trade in Sweden are brutally murdered, and Salander's prints are on the weapon. Her history of unpredictable and vengeful behaviour makes her an official danger to society - but no-one can find her anywhere. Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist, editor-in-chief of Millennium, will not believe what he hears on the news. Knowing Salander to be fierce when fearful, he is desperate to get to her before she is cornered and alone. As he fits the pieces of the puzzle together, he comes up against some hardened criminals, including the chainsaw-wielding 'blond giant' - a fearsomely huge thug who can feel no pain. Digging deeper, Blomkvist also unearths some heart-wrenching facts about Salander's past life. Committed to psychiatric care aged 12, declared legally incompetent at 18, this is a messed-up young woman who is the product of an unjust and corrupt system. Yet Lisbeth is more avenging angel than helpless victim - descending on those that have hurt her with a righteous anger terrifying in its intensity and truly wonderful in its outcome.

Irresistible Forces by Brenda Jackson (1 out of 6 stars)

One week of mind-blowing sex on a beautiful Caribbean island. Of all the business proposals financial tycoon Dominic Saxon has heard, Taylor Steele's is definitely the most tempting. All Taylor wants in return is for Dominic to father her baby. No strings, no commitments.just a mutually satisfying arrangement. Make that very satisfying. For a man with no intention of marrying again, it sounds ideal.

Taylor wants a baby, not a relationship. And sexy, intelligent Dominic seems like a man with perfect genes. Turns out, Dominic has perfect everything. Their "procreation vacation" is a whirlwind of sensual ecstasy. But when it's over, will either of them be able to say goodbye?

The Blue Edge of Midnight by Jonathon King (1st in Max Freeman series) [2 out of 6 stars]

Max Freeman's old life ended on a night that will haunt him for ever. The night he killed a twelve year old child in self defence in a Philadelphia shootout. The night he stopped being a cop. Now he lives an existence of solitary confinement on the edge of the Florida Everglades, where he answers to no one but the demons that eat away at his conscience. And then he finds the corpse of a child beside an ancient river, and Freeman's past explodes into the present. He is thrust into the centre of the search for a serial killer, distrusted as an outsider by the longtime residents of the Glades and considered a suspect by the police. Freeman must walk a tightrope of distrust on both sides of the law. When another child goes missing, all eyes turn to Freeman, and the ex cop, driven by his old habits and the memories of that long ago Philadelphia midnight, knows that he has no choice but to hunt down the murderer himself.

Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay (5 out of 6 stars)

Harry Boyd, a hard-bitten refugee from failure in Toronto television, has returned to a small radio station in Yellowknife, Northern Canada. There, in the summer of 1975, he falls in love with a voice on air, though the real woman, Dido Paris, is both a surprise and even more than he imagined. Dido and Harry are part of the cast of eccentric characters who form an unlikely group at the station. Their loves and longings, their rivalries and entanglements, the stories of their pasts and what brought each of them to the North, form the centre. One summer, on a canoe trip four of them make into the Arctic wilderness, they find the balance of love shifting, much as the balance of power in the North is being changed by the proposed Mackenzie Valley gas pipeline, threatening to displace Native people from their land. Hay brings to bear her skewering intelligence into the frailties of the human heart and her ability to tell a spellbinding story. Written in gorgeous prose and laced with dark humour, "Late Nights on Air" has an airiness and depth that make the book both accessible and rewardingly complex.

This is the latest book in this series. Such a fun, easy to read series.

But then Robin's apartment is ransacked, and the great guy she recently met is murdered in her bed. Now Robin is the #1 suspect. Obviously, exploring the Kama Sutra's bliss will have to wait until after Brooklyn finds the killer...(Amazon Review)
