I'm reading Rita Mae Brown's Catch as Cat Can. I like that even though it is an adult read, the animals talk to one another.

Phoebe, A Small Case for Inspector Ghote is due out in October. I think I read one of this series but can't remember if i liked it or not, so I'm going to see if the library has The Perfect Murder, which I think is the first.

Thanks for bringing Keating to my attention. I have him on my list of people to read, but the list is pages long, so I have overlooked him. I will take your recommendation and give him a try.

I'm reading H.R.F. Keating's "Inspector Ghote's First Case," the prequel to the whole Inspector Ghote series. It's actually the first Inspector Ghote novel in nine years -- and it's excellent. I wonder whether this means Keating's going to start writing new ones again?

Cheers,
Phoebe

I just finished Sacred Cows by Karen E. Olson and started her sequel, Secondhand Smoke. Her sleuth is a newspaper reporter who is torn between two lovers: a homocide detective, and the highschool geek turned prince charming who is a private detective. Fun read.

I am re-reading "The Tale of Hill Top Farm" by Susan Wittig Albert. I finally have the 2nd and 3rd book in this series so wanted to refresh my memory. It's a well written book with lots of interesting characters and I love how she has the animals having conversations.

I had not heard of Robert Goldsborough, so I looked him up. Here is a link explaining what prompted him to write Murder in E Minor, for anyone who does not know and who may be interested:

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/g/robe
rt-goldsborough/

I am almost finished with the fourth book by Donna Leon - Death and Judgment. I really like her books - they are set in Venice and have a lot of commentary about Italian politics. I was in Venice once only for a day in December. I think Venice is the perfect city for murder - it just has the right atmosphere.

I also got 1/2 way through Countdown and gave it back to the library. It was very disappointing. Johansen was a great read before. I loved the Eve Duncan stuff and the search for Bonnie's remains.

Johansen wrote a series of books about a forensic pathologist Eve Duncan who'd make facial recreations from skulls. She then added the woman with the cadaver dog that helped in missing person searches, She's branched off again and is now writing about Eve's adopted daughter who is involved with operatives who are trying to stop terrorists from a repeat 9/11. The latest storyline just does not "float my boat."

I'm on a Sandra Brown kick - now Smoke Screen.

I must have missed something-what happened to Johansen? I never read any of her books before.

I am currently reading Swimsuit by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro, Relentless by Dean Koontz, Smash Cut by Sandra Brown and I also started reading Have You Seen Her? by Karen Harper.

After starting Have you seen her, I realized that there was a book before it, it was part of a series. I HATE reading books out of sequence!! So, now I have to wait for my library to get Don't Tell, the first in the series. Needless to say, Harper is a great author. I just don't want to get into the middle of a series.

Anyone else like that? Can't start a book in the middle of a series?

Also-I was talking to Laurie, my Saturday librarian-and she mentioned John Saul. I know he has been writing a long time, but I have never read any of his. Anyone have any experience with this author? Please send me a Spark Mail! Thanks!!! :-)

Phoebe--I have read several in Purser's day of the week series. And angst ridden does describe the characters, the woman (its been a while, can't remember their names) and her mother bicker, the woman's employees find her annoying but love her anyway, her children have problems and the policeman who is always annoyed with her for investigating has a crush on her even though she is rude to him. So, yeah, they are pretty annoying to read. But some people (me) will wade through just about anything.

I just finished -- or, more accurately, decided not to finish -- Ann Purser's "Weeping on Wednesday," the third in her series about a woman who runs a housecleaning team (Scottish). I tried to like the people I was supposed to like, but I just found everyone in the book unpleasant. So halfway through, I skipped to the last chapters to see whodunnit and then put the book aside.

Has anyone else read this series? Are any of the others in the series ("Murder on Monday," etc.) less grubby and angst-ridden?

Cheers,
Phoebe

Elena Santangelo's By Blood Possessed. I hope the Society for the Preservation of Southern Ideals exists only in Elena's imagination. That is the creepiest thing about this book!

May your bobbin always be full!
