2 hours after eating...to capture the peak level of your blood glucose, it is best to test one to two hours after you start eating...is important because it helps you see how your body responds to carbohydrates in general and particular foods. Managing post-meal blood glucose can help reduce your risk of developing heart and circulation problems.

Testing in the morning will show you if you need a snack before bedtime to help regulate your blood sugar through the night.

Livestrong suggests...Protein is a key to preventing high blood sugar during the night. When digested, protein does not spike blood sugar or insulin levels, making it the best choice in food options before bedtime. A serving of protein should be eaten one to two hours before bedtime to help stabilize blood sugar levels before the extended fasting period during sleep. Good sources of protein include poultry, lean meats, fish, eggs and soy products.

Several places say to test your blood sugars before and after eating a test food...
Question : how long after eating the food do you test... Am I right to think that this would be a good thing to do first thing in the morning .like take regular fasting blood sugar - eat the food - wait for ____minutes and test again without eating anything else till test is done

Hi Ramon...hope this helps

Normal rye bread 57-78
Wheat whole grain 68-69
Wheat white bread 71
100% wheat white bread 85
sourdough rye bread 48

so...having a slice of sourdough is going to be a better choice than most other breads...try toasting rye bread or sourdough as toasting also lowers the glycemic index. Sourdough has beneficial gut bacteria that helps with digestion... pumpernickel bread is made from whole rye grain and has B complex vitamins and a regular slice of whole rye bread has about 83 calories and 15.5 grams of carbohydrates...get your bread sliced thin. You can usually get whole rye bread at a German Bakery.

I haven't touched wheat bread in years as it is said whole wheat can spike blood sugar. I haven't had a problem since I switched to the toasted rye and every now and then I get sourdough bread.

Is sourdough bread pre-diabetics? Or is it better than whole wheat?

Barley is the new oatmeal," says Jackson Blatner.
Barley got its hunger-fighting reputation after Swedish researchers found that eating barley or rye kernels for breakfast kept blood sugar on an even keelThat's because the carbs in barley and rye kernels are "low glycemic index," meaning they raise blood sugar more slowly than some other carbohydrate foods. This helps you avoid a spike, and then a drop, in blood sugar, which can leave you feeling famished.

Stop The Cravings!
Elin Johansson has received a scientific award for her research results concerning barley and GLP-1. She presented facts that Intake of a barley evening meal stimulates GLP-1 release, improves glucose tolerance and appetite regulation. 1/4 cup of barley will do the trick!

Since onions have the property of helping lower blood sugar, they are good for those suffering from diabetes. They also support protection from heart disease, which is common among diabetics.

It is said that water is a diabetics best friend, it can help lower blood sugar levels quickly. The way that it works is by diluting the sugar that is in the body. When the body flushes out all of the water that you drink, the sugar will go with it.

Don't forget about flaxseeds......Sprinkle ground flaxseed on cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, salads, and coleslaw Enhance cold dressings, yogurts, sauces and smoothies with flaxseed oil Mix ground flaxseed into meatloaf and meatballs....Flax seeds can also help increase the body's metabolism, thus making weight loss easier....helps with constipation and cholesterol too!

Oats And Barley provide energy...include them in your breakfast....add some flaxseed.

As reported by MSN....we may be able to finally put the great nut debate to rest, because a new research review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that despite their high levels of fat and calories, tossing almonds on your salad or munching on pistachios to get you through your afternoon slump won't cause weight gain.

I also heard pistachios lower cholesterol.

I do agree to test every food. The cherries don't bother me...but if I have 3-4 grapes my sugar goes up. I don't touch bananas or pineapple either...just too much sugar for me.

Yes, every diabetic is different.

I love cherries, but unfortunately they raise my blood sugar significantly if I have more than 3-4 so if in doubt check your blood sugar before and after eating them.

String Beans prevent blood sugar from rising too rapidly....

High fiber contained in beans prevents blood sugar levels form rising too rapidly after a meal. A good choice for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance, or
hypoglycemia. About 44 calories per cup. Add some sliced Almonds for Crunch

Green beans can lower Blood Pressure and help cholesterol.

The almonds....Almonds are believed to be the healthiest choice for nuts, they are low in saturated fat, reduce blood sugar levels and the risk of obesity. Diabetics and dieters alike should eat 1 ounce after a meal as it balances blood sugar.

Cherries reduce inflammation, lower blood sugar, keep your heart healthy, help gout and may even prevent certain cancers. Cherries lower cholesterol and promote sleep. A handful of cherries a day may keep the doctor away. Cherries contain beta carotene, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, fiber, and potassium.
