Yeah, Zannachan you might have heard that from me or read that same article I read. When you smile it sends a signal to the brain that you are pleased and you actually feel better. My DH did that to me the other day, I was aggravated while driving (crazy drivers)-he said Smile- you'll feel better. I did, I kept doing it and it worked. I even started laughing, which in turn helped me feel even better.

I don't know if it helps, but I read somewhere that if you make yourself smile, even if you don't feel like it, it will actually cause you to feel happier. I don't know if it helps, but maybe try smiling at the mirror?

I like the idea that wrinkles are earned. My husband has minute laugh lines--not really wrinkles, not yet, but I love seeing them because they tell me he's happy--not just at that moment, but in general. It's written write there in those tiny lines.

I told DH about my wrinkles comment and your positive revision, Debi. He told me what he thinks about his wrinkles, "I worked for every one of them." I guess I could say I worked for mine, too. Also, I like the fact that my smile wrinkles are more pronounced than my frown wrinkles. If I keep thinking like this, am I in danger of getting conceited? emoticon

Connie - do you have a part of your body that you do like? say your hand or ?? Look at that body part in the mirror and tell it how much you like it. Or get really close to your mirror and focus on long eyelashes, or soft skin of your cheek, or the gentle swirl of your ear.

Or just be positive in general - "I am going to make today a GREAT DAY, I am going to make good choices today, I am going to smile today, I am ...." get the idea? Just avoid any and all negatives!

Reflecting on this challenge, I had discovered, just lately, that I do not look in the mirror, because I do not want to see that sadness in my eyes. My eyes are like a mirror of my soul. I carry a lot of sadness in my soul and it seems I do not want to face it and I had not deal with it, as I should and have, too.

Thanks guys for all the compliments - this is what we do for one another, support!

Sharon - I might not have called it a challenge, but you are right, it is sort of one. It was meant for me and I just thought I'd drag you all along. ? 72, good for you! (in teeny tiny print, my mom turned 72 on Dec 7th). How about we change that second question to "Where did those amazing wrinkles come from, they really add to the character of my face!" (I love to take pictues of peoples faces, the more wrinkles the better, I love the character, they catch me and give me dirty looks).

Zannachan - yes, focus on the eyes, it makes it easier for me too. We can work on the eyes for a week, and then move around the face for a week, and then maybe, just maybe we can do the red carpet poses in the mirror?

Carmen - borrow away my friend, I borrowed from that blog I read somewhere.

Psalm34V7 - saying it out loud, I hadn't thought of that...just went back to my mirror and said it out loud (got strange looks from cat). See, you guys are helping me too!

Connie - I like your slogans too. Keep sharing!

Hi NEDERLUNG,
Its on my bathroom mirror, so I see it (almost) first thing every morning. Also, I've posted it near the edge, which is where you pull to open the medicine cabinet. When I see it, I say it out loud. I think it sets me up for success the day.

"Then I came back and put the mirror into my personal goals, so I will remember to make a point of being nice to myself. Can I challenge you to do the same?"

Deal.

It's a lot easier to be kind to myself when I'm not looking in the mirror, for some reason--look at how hard I pushed myself at the gym today! Look at how long I walked yesterday and my hip only aches, rather than hurts to the point I can't move! But when I look in the mirror, all that is harder to see.

Maybe I'll start small. I like my eyes. They are the one part of me I've always liked.

NEDERLUNG - Thanks for this mirror challenge, though you didn't call it a challenge.

A similar thread I saw elsewhere was, "What do you like about your body?" My answer to that was, "My eyelashes because they don't show age."

These days when I look in the mirror I have 2 thoughts, one positive and one negative.

Positive, about my figure - I am really looking good since I lost weight.

Negative, about my face - Where did all those wrinkles come from all of a sudden? I'll only be 72 next week so what's that all about? emoticon

PSALM34V7 - I post my slogans and motivational pictures near my computer screen and on my refrigerator where I am more likely to read/see them, as I've been ignoring the mirror. Does it work on the mirror, I'd be afraid I wouldn't actually read it every day?

THELOSER33 - 'Lovely Lady' is a good one, did you remember to say it today?

ZANNACHAN - I'll admit, this hasn't been easy for me either. Today when I made a point of looking in the mirror, I could make eye contact, but did not look at my body (yet). Just talking to my eyes today. Then I came back and put the mirror into my personal goals, so I will remember to make a point of being nice to myself. Can I challenge you to do the same?

"I hope you started being more positive to yourself this morning. Can you put a note on the mirror that says "be positive"? "

Couldn't hurt! Of course, part of it is that I'm not positive, or negative, first thing in the morning... I'm barely coherent. So I don't look in the mirror for anything other than making sure my hair isn't sticking up in the air or something.

So I don't normally think much of anything unless I'm getting ready for something special later and I want to look my best. Then it's all to easy to think "Ugh, look at those circles under my eyes!" (for some reason I often have circles under my eyes, even though I get plenty of sleep most of the time) or "ugh, why can't I get rid of this belly fat." Instead, I need to think of things I like rather than what I don't like.

Thanks everyone for responding!

Connie - I've never read his book, but I like that slogan! Thank you for sharing. Will you share another every day?

Lauri - I think that is a GREAT start! are you going to add a wink? smiles?

Carmen - like you I don't 'really' look in the mirror either, but I'm making a point of it now. So have you looked yet? You don't have to do an examination, just look yourself in the eyes and talk to yourself.

Zannachan - I hope you started being more positive to yourself this morning. Can you put a note on the mirror that says "be positive"? And then you will be off to a good start.

I don't think or say much to myself when looking in the mirror, but when I do it does tend to be critical--I need to be more proactive about looking at myself and saying positive things.

interesting idea. I heard just smiling at yourself in the mirror can make you happy!! I have a small book called The Book of Hope by Richard Simmons and when you mentioned this- I got it out. There are sayings on it for hope and encouragement-so I suppose it could be said in the mirror. How's this for today: You can use it too....I will stop comparing myself to others and make myself the best person I can possibly be!
