I hope you enjoyed thinking about lightening up and that you DID manage to do some lightening up ;) It sounded like it from the posts!

As I review May I am fairly pleased with how the month went. I spent a lot of time getting well and learning the ins and outs of my body. I lightened up a whole lot on my eating and I am going to stick with it going forward. I also lightened up, I think, in my attitude although that is a continual work in progress. I found it interesting that on the very last day of the month I was alternately inspired AND challenged about my attitudes toward other people--being judgmental, being disappointed, thinking deeply about relationships and how to protect one's self.

As far as health goes, well I am holding my weight at 123, which is what I wanted to do and now it's a case of exercising to keep muscle tone and finding a good lotion that doesn't cause me to break out in hives and that maybe makes the saggy skin less apparent ;)

I've decided June's challenge will be "Halfway point, what about the rest of the year?" Post away there!

Val

I really lightened up this weekend!! Yesterday I mowed the back and front lawns, then spent the rest of the day power washing our deck that has not been cleaned for ten years!! IT was like removing black paint from it!!
It took hours of back-breaking work, moving the grill and a picnic table on it, going over it and over it until you can now see the bare wood!!

I am not sure, but I think I heard my muscles screaming in agony last night...yup, it had to be them..

today I lightened up my laundry baskets,, have five loads on the clothesline and one in the dryer.. My DD is going to grill some filet mignon and I am making a huge green spring salad and baked potatoes to go with it.
I also lightened up my wallet by getting to the grocer by 7 a.m. and getting all my things for the next two weeks breakfasts that I pack for work. Had $39 in coupons and BOGOs. got some free things too..
Have a great LIGHT day all!! Lin

Good Morning All ...

I just fired up the computer to check the status of Sharon's flight ... on time, so far. Her connecting flight isn't off the ground yet, but at least she's in place to catch it when it goes. If all goes and her flight arrives in Minot at 10:30 we should have her and her bags loaded in the Envoy and be on the road to Fargo by 11:00. It's a five hour drive but the dinner doesn't start until 6:00 so we SHOULD have enough to get cleaned up, changed find the location of the dinner. Keep your fingers crossed that we don't have any trouble on the road. I'm such a worrier!

'morning gals,

Well we've got three more days of May, how do we feel? And have you any ideas for a theme for June? Do you want to continue with the "lightening up" idea through the summer? I'll be around all of June but I'm heading to the UK around July 4th and have no idea what my access to wireless or computers will be like for the two months I'll be there. Can someone co-lead with me for summer so we don't get into the doldrums??

I've made some progress in the paper reduction this month. Filled about five bags with shredding. Still have a way to go though. Today I am going to spend a couple of hours on entering my genealogical info on Ancestry.com and then I will shred my paper stuff. That will take care of about 16 inches of paper.

Lin ... after working on clearing out the junk that has accumulated in my basement over 17 years I sat down to take a break, turned on the computer and found your garage saga. Holy cow! I can feel your pain (well come of it, anyway). I haven't fallen over anything yet, but I have lifted, pulled, carried, bagged and washed things I didn't even know we owned. I have a couple piles of things The Two Pauls have to look through before I throw out. Some of their stuff I did throw out without consulting with them, but some stuff I'll let them have input on. The basement is beginning to take shape and I'm almost ready to put the bed together. I've found the mattress pad, blankets, sheets and pillow cases for the bed and am in the process of washing them so they'll have been freshly laundered before I make the bed. Hopefully I'll be done by Thursday evening. I'm scheduled to pull a four hour shift at the reception desk in the red cross office on Friday and will have Friday afternoon to get packed to leave on Saturday.

Val ... Are you enjoying the quiet or missing the commotion?

Well, the washer kicked off, so I've got to move that load to the dryer and get another load started. Looks like my break is over for now!

I'm back from the wilds of Arizona!! Boy is it quiet in the house--after a weekend of a 4,3, and 1 year old running around, this is quite a change!!

We had a lovely weekend with dd and the dgks. Meandered around her small town, looking at property and houses for fun. Gks enjoyed our hotel pool. I did get spells of feeling very tired but was able to just sit on the couch and watch all the goings on.
This is our final week for lightening up and I really have to make some serious headway in the den, and in other places of the house. We're actually not going to move from here until June 10th but by then everything has to be sorted as to what dh is taking to his not-yet-found summer quarters, what I am packing for England and what will be squeezed back into our storage unit. And I have to be sure I have all the necessary info to manage our resources from England too.

PICKIE, I read that you also took a header from the canoe after your fall mentioned here. Hey girl, what ARE you trying to do to yourself?? Are you sure you're not drinking the Pinot Noir beforehand??? [grin]

Hope everyone had a great weekend and we'll see folks checking in today.

Val,
I love your new "do"!! Just a wash and go kinda gal,eh?? That is great considering where you live, so warm you can go outside and just let the sunny warm air dry it!!
Good choice!!

Terriejo, I guess you are the den mother to end all of them,, what a great thing to do!! I always wanted to be a girl scout, my mom would not let me join anything,, all my friends were in scouts,, I made sure that my daughter could join and I helped with every project, car pooled, camped with them,, it was a blast!!

I guess I will just write here, being the only person who has no idea what an air card is, never saw a blackberry in person except the plant I just put in the ground!!
I se Val lightened up her hair volume for the month, but I, lightened the volume of STUFF in my garage after 25 years of accumulation!!
I always act as my own contractor, so I hired my friend's hubby(he is my friend too) two weeks ago to build a workbench and upper and lower cabinets in my garage. Yesterday he came back to finish the hardware on them, then we hauled every single thing from the garage that was not attached to the frame of the building!! I had already thrown out five large trash bags and a few huge boxes of stuff last week. Yesterday we hauled out enough stuff to make a five foot-by-fifteen foot pile about four feet high for the trash man!! Whoosh, out it went!! No tears, no regrets, just a lightening up of my garage and life!!
I then fired up my new power washer, he did the whole floor twice, I swept all the water continuously into the floor drain, , we got two box fans going to dry the floor quickly, then brought the essentials back into the room, completely organized, everything in its' place except a few boxes that I have to go through later.
We then went to the testosterone store (some people call it Menard's) and I bought a big shop light, power strip and he installed them over my workbench!!
The BAD part of the day was:halfway through the hard work, I was stepping over the garden hose, careful NOT to trip over it, did trip over a pipe and ended up falling hard and flat on my face, breasts, right knee, arm hand, etc!!
I have never fallen that hard in my life!!
I actually almost passed out, lay there until he ran to help me up.
I refused to stop working, I had waited for this day for over 20 years, so i just dealt with it!! UNTIL.....

When we finished, he went home, I took some tylenol, waited awhile, drank two glasses of Pinot Noir, ( I rarely ever drink, maybe a few glasses a year, if that) and waited for the throbbing pain to subside.. took more tylenol, slept some and am very sore today!! I have no idea how many calories I burned , but I worked non stop for over nine hours, physically,,

so this is a book, but I guess I want to say, don't give up if something deters you, just see the end goal and keep on going if the E.R. or Last Rites are not needed!! emoticon

I cannot emphasize enough how great I feel getting my garage and my life more organized!!! Every room now except my awful kitchen is totally redone!!
I feel extremely sore, bruised and very bloody, but fulfilled!!

I'll be out of touch this weekend too. I won't have internet access because I don't have an air card and the state park we are going to doesn't have wifi. Next weekend we will be traveling to Bismarck for Shannon's Freedom Salute. Sharon, my girlfriend who lives in New Jersey (and PTS's GodMother) will be arriving on the 30th. We'll pick her up at the airport and head straight to Fargo. She will be with us through Thursday the 4th of June so I will be devoting time to her visit and neglecting all of you ... sorry. On Friday and Saturday the 5th and 6th of June I'll be camping with the boy scouts ... in a tent of all things ... completing the outdoor portion of my scoutmaster training. I'll be back in the saddle here on Sunday the 7th, at least for two weeks. Then I'll be off to Camp Wilderness for eight days of summer camp, working as a volunteer unit commissioner ... there's that volunteer word again ... I wasn't kidding when I said I was becoming a professional volunteer. I don't know what the rest of the summer holds. Aside from two weekends of Wood Badge Training (more boy scout stuff) one in August and one in September I don't have anything else on my calendar for the summer, but I'm sure there will be several camping weekends along the way. I really have to look into this air card thing ... I love going camping but hate being out of touch with y'all.

Have a great day! Stay focused when you make your food choices. Look for exercise opportunities. Do your best to have a happy, healthy day.

We'll be heading to southern AZ tonight to spend Memorial Day weekend with dd and family. My Blackberry is acting up, won't pick up browser network, so I don't know if I'll be very communicative this weekend.
I'll be thinking of y'all though and hoping that we all have a happy and HEALTHY (food choices) weekend!

That's great! The students get to do their taxes under your supervision (probably the 10-40EZ) and also get to experience putting together a more complex tax form as well. I'm sure the day will come when they have more to put on a tax form than they do now, and they won't be afraid of the longer forms because they have been exposed to it in your class.

I do taxes with them too. First I teach them how to do theirs (they bring in their W2 forms) then we do MINE all together. Step by step... and it takes forever but they see it isn't hard just a lot of steps. And that also lightens my load with them sorting receipts etc.

LaNeita ... I think it's wonderful that you find a way to incorporate life skills into all your classes. I am convinced that one of the most useful classes I ever took in school was my General Business class in Junior High School. It covered check writing, budgeting, and filing income tax among other things. No matter what you do in life you are going to need to know how to do those things.

Val ... sorry I can't be of any help to you as far as food choices. I've never had the problem you are having at the moment (Thank you, Lord) and don't have any idea what direction to point you in. Good luck!

You're giving your son a good start in life TERRIE. I think budgeting and financial planning should be a required course for students in their high school freshman year.

Okay, I am struggling a bit. I've got an irritated bowel--one of the last vestiges from the surgery--and I am at my wit's end to know what to eat not to aggravate it. I looked up the SP Health A-Z and the list of foods that can aggravate is discouraged. Just about all proteins. I did eat a banana and some deli turkey slices for lunch today and that was better than after eating this morning's breakfast of toast and peanut butter. But I just don't know what to eat that will still keep me going! Any ideas???

As a high school teacher, no matter what subject I am assigned to teach for the semester, I find a way to include budgeting, check writing, the intelligent use of credit and how not to abuse it. The students all come back to tell me just how helpful that information was to them in college and in life.

I am so glad that our son decided on a college in our own town. He did look into other universities but in the end decided in Minot State because it has a great reputation for it's teaching program and he wants to be a teacher. We have spoken about saving money and how important it is to have a good credit rating. I told him he will have free room and board as long as he is a student, and I will pick up the tab for his tuition and books as well. Any money he saves I will match up to $5,000.00 a year (the amount we are saving by him living at home) as long as he continues to save. Once he starts making withdrawals he has to get the saving balance back to where it was before I will give him any more matching funds. The matching funds thing is something my parents did for my brother and me when we were students. By the time he graduates he should be on firm ground financially speaking, as long as he follows the plan we negitiated together. He has spoken to some of the boys (young men, now) that were ahead of him in scouting and knows all too well the financial woes and student loans they are buried under and doesn't want to end up where they are.

Terrie, that's great that you're dialoguing with your son like that. When my dd went to college, I told her I would pay her tuition and residence (she went to VA while we lived in Toronto) costs and books, travel home. But she got a part-time job on-campus and paid for everything else. She didn't do particularly well in her academic subjects but I don't think that was because of her working; she just wasn't academically inclined since grade school. I put a lot of blame on the grade schools/high schools in Ontario that didn't require homework and spent too much time on the "social sciences" stuff. Ah well, won't get started on THAT. Anyway, I am sure you've got this point already but tell him to pay HIMSELF first into a long-term savings account. 10% of his paycheck. Cars can be a real drain. Of course, I come from a big city where cars weren't necessary. Dd didn't get her first car (I gave her my old one) until she was 20 and needed it for work. And then boy did she find out about budgeting!!

Sounds like we're all doing a lot of sorting, filing and throwing. I went to the savings bond box to get a few ready to cash in to pay for my son's tuition for the summer term and found there were a couple missing from the box. I knew I had a box of bank statements, IRA statements, and other financial "stuff" in the spare room so I went digging around in there looking for the missing bonds. Sure enough that's where they were. As I sorted through the box I made two piles ... one the shred and the other to file. All the shredding and filing is done!

Val ... You're absolutely right about money management. One of the required merit badges for Eagle Scout is "Personal Management". From that merit badge the boys learn the importance of time management, organizational skills and money management. They have to track all their financial transactions for 90 days. Paul is very good about recording what he spends, where, on what, and when. What he's not so good at is making wise financial decisions, but that is about to change. I told him I would pay his tuition, books, vehicle and medical insurance and give him free room and board as long as he is in school, regardless of what he is earning at his job. He will be responsible for all his other expenses. I copied all the Spark Articles in the "Starting and Sticking to a Budget" series and gave them to him. We will discuss budgeting this weekend after he has had a chance to read through the material. He hasn't even seen his first pay check yet and he's already talking about buying a new (used, but new to him) vehicle!

Speaking of papers.... my school delivered 40 years worth of teaching materials in boxes to my house when I was on medical leave. It took me MONTHS to go through all that crap. For 3 weeks straight I FILLED all my neighbor's recycled bins to the brim (there are 14 houses in our cul de sac street). Well to get to the point... ha ha..... I put a ton of receipts in the back of a file drawer to file later. So yesterday I pulled them all out...put them in a box and took them to work to sort out. Tomorrow I will file the piles of sorted papers and receipts into the proper folders.... WHEWWWWWW lighter load on my mind!!!!

That's wonderful about your son's job Terrie!! And be sure that he starts taking over some of the things you've been paying for; the most important part about working at that age is learning money management, right??

Well, for the past several months, I've been facing a pile of paper in the den. I keep resolving to get it down to a level where it's just "needed" but somehow I never seem to accomplish it. In a month we'll be putting things back into storage and I REALLY don't want to store things that aren't needed. So an hour a day from now on and I will definitely attack these papers. If I really don't want to throw them away, I'll scan them--which will probably take ages but I think it makes sense in the long run. Thumb drives take up a lot less space, right???

Oh, I did 45 minutes with Leslie Sansone's DVD yesterday!! And I'm doing fine today!

My son started his job at UPS today. He'll be working 20 hours a week, 6:30 - 10:30P ... perfect for his school schedule! UPS has great benefits, even for their part time workers. He's thrilled to have his first "real" job. He worked as a camp counselor at boy scout summer camp last year, but his father and I have discouraged him from seeking employment during the school year. As we see it his "job" is to get an education and enjoy the whole high school experience. He has been active in boy scouts, on the swim team, cross country and track teams, scratch bowling team, in the school band and maintained a spot on the honor roll since 8th grade. Now that he has done all that it's okay with us for him to get a job. That will make my credit card balance lighter ... I had a card issued in his name and he uses it for his gas and meals when his church youth group goes out on Friday nights. I always pay the credit card off monthly, and that will be easier to do now that he'll be paying for his own gas and such.

Couldn't get a hair appt until next Tuesday but I did go to the optometrist and now my wallet is lighter from getting new glasses (the ones I have are 11 years old) and contact lenses. But I'll see the light better, right?

Good plan Val, that is what I always do too. Pick someone's hair I like (that is like mine) and get the name and place and then go. I did that when I visited Texas last summer. A woman in church had this cute short, short haircut and I went and got my hair cut. I loved it.... but now I am back in LA and no one can seem to match it. OH WELL. I will be on the lookout for someone with the hair I want. ha ha I hope your cut turns out good and just the way you like it. LIGHT

Today I would like to lighten up with the perfect haircut. Pixie style, not too heavy (have very thick hair), wash n wear of course. Picking a new hairstylist is always such a conundrum. I've had great cheap cuts--and terrible ones--and I've had great expensive haircuts--and terrible ones. Hurts less when you didn't pay a lot of money. There was a woman in church a few weeks ago who had the kind of cut I'd like and I got the name of the salon and cutter from her. Think I'll call today.
And that's my "light" conversation for this morning ;)

I sure as heck hope it's not YOUR limbs you'll be trimming, Pickie. That would be a check of a way to lose weight. I wonder what an arm and leg weigh?

Val ... There are all kinds of remedies for dry skin. If the cocoa butter LaNeita doesn't do it for you, try vitamin E. I've used that when I get patchy dry spots. It's so dry up here during the winter I could just flake away.

Mine was laparascopic and vaginal. No muscles cut.

I don't have much of a stomach, just a little bit. My skin is so dry right now though everything looks like a desert after a windstorm--ripply ;)

Terri Jo ... I know you are so happy to have your neice home safe and sound

Val When I had my hysterectomy they cut the muscles and I was told that once the muscles are cut there is nothing you can do. I use to do 500 sit-ups a day and NOTHING. I was told that by many different people. I don't know if your muscles were cut or yours was vaginal. If vaginal then that is a different story.

My heart is lighter now that my niece, Shannon, is out of Iraq and back on US soil. She is at Ft. Dix, New Jersey for out processing and will be back in North Dakota by the end of the week ... she thinks Thursday will be the big day.

The scale says all of me is lighter ... down 2.6 pounds for the week. I've been tracking my food and exercise and sticking to my meal and workout plans to the letter. Looks like it's paying off.

My fitness focus has changed since my children went back to school in April after being off in March. It has gone from focusing more on my personal fitness and nutrition to focusing more on the family. We have not been taking the car out to school or other nearby places. Instead we have riden our bikes, scooters or walked. My husband goes when he isn't working. I am not working out as hard as I was before but I am getting 4 other people to work out too. My nutrition has gone down a little but I will get better with that and it isn't as bad as it was in years previous to 2008. In fact I still heat healthier than most people.

The second full week of May--do any of you feel a slight panic as to how fast this year is passing? I do!

I did get out and about a bit this weekend but I also spent a lot of time sleeping on the couch. I still feel like I'm walking around in some kind of netherworld--not quite up to par energywise. My big problem is trying to figure out a healthy diet for myself now that I am back to eating again. I want to eat for energy and healing but I can't make head nor tail of all of this 'menopause eating' stuff. Maybe it's because I don't like tofu and beans??? So that's my goal this week, to see if I can come up with something that will give me back my energy.

I am another pound lighter though--now down to 123. My stomach is starting to sag inward a bit though. Need to go onto the Hyster Sisters website and see if I can do any tummy tightening yet. Forgot to ask my doc on Friday about exercises; she seemed in a hurry to wave me off.

How is everyone else doing? What are your "lightening up" challenges this week?

Val ... how exciting to be able to check out the village your ancestors came from. I had that opportunity the time I joined my father in Ireland. He took me to Mohill, Co. Leitrum, where his father came from ... and returned to when he decided he didn't like life in the US. He left my Grandmother and his two sons here, returned to Ireland and built a home he named "Cohasset Villa". When my dad and I went to Mohill we drove by Cohasset Villa and took our pictures standing in the road in front of the house. The woman who owns the home now (no relation) invited us in, served us tea, and told us what she knew about my Grandfather. It was wonderful hearing about him from someone who actually knew him. We also went to a pub in Mohill ... the J.J. Mc....; my father's name is J.J. Mc.... and it was pretty cool being in a pub with the same name as my father. Naturally we had out pictures taken there as well, right under the J.J. Mc.... sign. Sorry to hear the healing is going slowly and you're having nasty side effects to the antibiotics. Healing just can't be rushed ... it happens in its own sweet time.

KING*GET*FIT ... it's great that your husband is at least supporting you on the snack issue. You're setting a great example and that's what counts. You can't follow everyone around 24/7 and watch what they are putting in their mouths.

PICKIE98 ... sorry to hear about the water in your basement. That really stinks. Seems like you're making lemonade out of lemons, using the water issue as motivation to lighten up on old bills and documents, etc. Happy bailing!

Got to run ... I've been looking forward to Oprah's interview with Elizabeth Edwards. A spark friend wrote something about it on her blog today ... I guess Oprah is on in the mornings some places, but around here it comes on at 3:00P, which is right now.

YEs, patience is the most difficult part of post-op. I was alone at home,, well, my daughter was 13 at the time, but in school all day. I had to prepare everything for the day while she was home the night before, could not cook, clean, go up and down the basement stairs(pantry, laundry) drive,,,,
Due to complications of my gigungo uterus(took two surgeons to reach in and pull it out vaginally), I had bladder probs too..
I wanted to just get up and do stuff in a week.. no can do.. the body knows better.. the more patient you are with your body now, the more likely you are to have LESS complications down the road.

I am just happy that you are doing well and have your DH to help you,, it makes all the difference in the world.. I know you appreciate him too..
Take care

Well, PICKIE, I'm trying to take one day at a time because it does work like that. One day feel great, next day pooped. Today is a "pooped" day. And I've still got nasty side effects from the antibiotics so am drinking cranberry juice and eating yogurt--and sitting on a donut pillow.

But this too shall pass!! The bruises on my tummy are fading and now that the antibiotics are finished I know I'll feel better soon.

My dh and children weren't totally on board from the beginning. I still push them along but I cook healthy and they have gotten use to that but still sneak evil foods in here and there, lol. My friend brought potato chips on the hike and my children hogged them like children whose parents don't but that stuff, oh yeah, we don't anymore. I know it won't hurt for them to have them now and again but I try not to have them around so they are really a treat when they do. At first dh would just buy them and bring them home but I had a few talks with him and him sabataging my efforts so he has slowly come around. It is so helpful to have my husband at least partially on board to help me out and it helps that he has lost a few lbs., improved his chloesteral, and brought his blood sugars down. Success is a great motivator.

Terrie, I'm hoping to go to England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I've been to all except NI, but as I recently discovered my ancestors originated in NI and then moved down to Eire, I'm anxious to investigate the old village there.

My dh has got very out of shape and refuses to hike with me anymore :( Too much desk work and stress. Hope that while I'm away, he'll find his 'click'.

Lanita ... I'm with Val ... you can keep your earthquakes. I was in Los Angeles for a major one in '71, and in Greece for another major one in '89 ... don't want to be in anymore!

Val ... when are you going to the UK? Will you get a chance to get to visit all the countries in that area? I had a chance to visit Scotland and Ireland while I was stationed in England ... didn't get to Wales or Northern Ireland. I'd love to go back someday.

King*Get*Fit ... I wish I could get my family more involved in my efforts to get healthier. My husband flat refuses to exercise with me. He doesn't get in the way of what I am doing, he just isn't interested in participating. As for my son ... he's 18 now and he's out more than he's home. I don't have much influence over what he eats anymore. He does get plenty of exercise though. He's always participated in school sports as well as some sports programs outside the school. Hopefully he'll remain active when he gets to college.

My girlfriend called from New Jersey. She has some time off the beginning of June and wants to come out for a visit. I've love to see her, so I better get busy lightening up the spare bedroom. It has become a repository for junk over that last two years!

This week's lightening up will be to spend some time each day entering my genealogy records into ancestry.com. Once I've got everything entered, then I'll have a better idea of where the gaps are I need to fill this summer over in the UK.
And my other lightening up this week will be to start doing very light routines with my Leslie Sansone DVDs. I'll choose the easiest and notch down on even that. I've missed her happy smile and voice.
And LANEITA, you can keep your earthquakes!

I'm going to continue to lighten up by trying to put my family first. First in getting them to eat better and exercise with me. I like making exercise more of a family event because then I know I am working at raising stronger people and I do believe that stronger bodies can build stronger minds as well.

whales in Maine and earthquakes in Los Angeles. We had another GOOD one last night. I love earthquakes. It was a 4.9. I know, I know ... I am crazy but I do love them.

I'm glad you enjoyed your low key day, Val. Sounds like the right combination of a short excursion out followed by an afternoon of rest ... great for healing.

LANEITA--yep dh means dear husband. Can sometimes have another "d" adjective but in my case, it's very much dear, long suffering husband :)

Today was a low energy day for me. We did go out for a few hours to see if Borders had any interesting 50% DVDs (they did) and then stopped at MY favorite restaurant for Eggs Florentine for me. Yum, poached eggs with some hollandaise. A real treat and, again, my stomach stayed fairly quiet which was good. But after that I was very tired so we went back home and spent the afternoon watching an old movie called The Whales of August. About two elderly sisters living on an island off Maine. Very low key, very quiet. Both of us fell asleep on our respective couches.

I've just eaten my piece of toast so I can take my evening antibiotic. And some unsweetened cranberry juice mixed with mint herbal tea.

It rained here today!! We've had a few days of rain these past weeks. Unlike the Northerners, Santa Feans LOVE rain! It's a real blessing when it comes. So the sky may have been "dark" in looks but it lightened up a lot of people today :)

Val ... I'm glad you're feeling better. You've just been through a major surgery, and it is going to take time to recover, both physically and mentally! Take it slow and be kind to yourself.

LANEITA .. I do believe dh is "Dear Husband".

Linda ... God Bless you and your sore tongue. The nuns used to tell us any suffering we do here on earth, without complaint, will be time off our sentence in purgatory. Sounds like your family is going to see to it your ticket is punched for a straight shot to heaven!

Such great lightening up ideas!! Let's keep reporting on our progress :)

I had a mini meltdown yesterday afternoon on dh. So I went to bed and cried myself to sleep. Napped for 3 hrs and felt miles and miles better. Even though I'd been lying on the couch all morning, I guess I needed sleep.
Last night we went to our favorite Chinese restaurant and I had chicken noodle soup. And it didn't upset my stomach so guess my bland/no fiber regime is working. Short term of course, until I finish the antibiotics. I tell you gals, these modern drugs may work wonders but I wonder what they do to us. My skin is pale yellow right now--one of the side effects.
Still, I feel SO grateful that I'm getting better every day!

Actually I DO have old, old real apples. They are magnets made into a grandpa and a grandma head. hs ha Maybe those should be the first to go. I think they are 19 years old. I also NEVER had a cow collection just a few cow decorations in my kitchen. People would come over and say "Oh, you collect cows!!" (then they would bring me cows ALL the time). It got so big I took it to school (the collection). Then the students said "OH, you have a cow collection"..... well you know the rest. Now it is back at home. ha ha ha NOW I guess I DO have a huge cow collection. Hey they ARE kind of cute.

I will try to lighten up my attitude with my mother and some co-workers. They are the true test of Christian faith.
If there were such a thinga s a tongue transplant, I would need one for al the biting of my tongue with these people.

Now that it's nice(er) out I want to get outside more. I took Rusty for a walk today because today is the first day in over a week that it isn't raining out. Yea sunshine!

In getting outside more I hope to shed a few pounds through exercise, so I have set a pedometer goal for myself. Just for the record, my May goal in pedometer steps is a total of 40,145 steps. That is based on my April totals ...

TOTAL APRIL STEPS: 388,365
DAILY AVERAGE STEPS: 1,295
TOTAL APRIL MILES (AT 2000 STEPS PER MILE) 194.1825
DAILY AVERAGE MILES: 6.47

Since there were 30 days in April and there are 31 days in May I multiplied my daily average of 1,295 by 31 to come up with the 40,145. That goal is a minimum ... I'd sure like to bump my daily pedometer steps up to 15,000 steps, but that's a big stretch, so I'll stick to a more realistic goal of 1,295 steps.

Hope you don't have any 40 year old apples displayed! (Hmmm--don't some craftspeople carve apple people?)

Well I am trying to "lighten up" the STUFF in my house. In 58 years I have accumulated LOTS of STUFF. Being a high school teacher all those little things that the kids give you mean something to me so I keep and display them. I have TONS of stuff after 40 years of teaching. I just want to get rid of lots of it.... but it is hard (oh the memories.... I love those kids)

What a toughie. I have a slew of negative stuff and my way of dealing with it is to pay attention to something else -- or go run. Yes I think the only reason I managed to take up run/walking was because I've got a bunch of negatives I'm trying to deal with.

So here is something I'll do this next week. Buy houseplants. I had a bike accident 3 years ago. Landed on my right lower arm, did major injury to my right elbow, needed surgury, could not drive for a month, had a year of PT, still have lose of range of motion. Anyway in all that my houseplants died and I haven't replaced them. Just looking at the empty pots makes me sad, but I can't bring myself to replace them. How crazy is that? Well this Sunday/Monday I'll go and replace my plants and forgive myself for something----I'm still not sure what.

It's a new month, one that has always been my favorite. Why? Well, because where I grew up (Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the frozen North) May was when Spring seriously arrived. Trees blossomed, flowers bloomed, the last threat of frost retreated (well, by May 24th, the official "Montreal Planting Day"). Only one more month of school remained before summer break. I could shed several pounds' worth of clothing, wear knee socks and light shoes.

And it's on this last--shedding pounds--that I was thinking about my goals for May. Maybe it will give you pause for thought as well. Although the pounds I shed in those long-ago Montreal Mays were on the "outside" rather than the inside. . .coats, heavy sweaters, boots, gloves, etc., at this stage in my life, I'd like to think THIS May I will continue to shed "inside" pounds. Those heavy, negative thoughts about what I can or cannot do, past regrets--do you know what I mean?

So I'd like to propose that our theme this month be "Lighten up". What do y'all think? What would you like to lighten up on this month?

Val
