That's too bad, Val. Hind sight is 20/20! Most people don't get a second opinion because we trust our doctors and hold them in high regard.

The one time I wanted, no, DEMANDED a second opinion it was because there was friction between me and the doctor. He was the department head so when I asked for the second opinion I said I wanted it at a different hospital. As luck would have it the doctor I had the run in with was at an Army hospital and I demanded to be sent to an Air Force hospital for the second opinion. I was stationed in Germany at the time, and called an Air Force doctor in the states. He happened to be the commander of the USAF Hospital at the Air Force Academy at the time, but he had been following me for lupus for years. He took the matter up with the neuro surgeon and an orthopedic surgeon on his staff, and greased the skids to have me transferred to an Air Force hospital in German for further evaluation. In the end, the air force put me in the med vac system and sent me back to the states for the surgery. I had broken my second cervical vertebrae in a car accident and the army doctor, an orthopedic surgeon, wanted to fuse the vertebrae. The doctor who had been following me for lupus said his staff wouldn't make a recommendation because they hadn't seen the x-rays but did feel the surgery shouldn't be done by an orthopedic surgeon unless it was life threatening. Once I got the the air force hospital in Germany the orthopedic surgeon there agreed that the surgery should be done by a neuro surgeon so I was sent from Germany to Texas for the surgery. Everything turned out well ... my first, second and third cervical vertebrae and now fused together which has caused me to lose some range of motion in my neck, but I'm alive and well.

Thanks TERRIE and what was haunting me for a few days--amidst the feverish tossing and turning--was that perhaps the surgery hadn't even been required. Turns out that both the CT scan and ultrasound were misinterpreted. I didn't have a complex cyst on my ovary, it was a fibroid that was pushing on it, looking like a cyst (I guess). Perhaps if I'd had a second opinion, I would have found that out. Two perfectly healthy ovaries bit the dust because the surgeon decided that they may as well come out at my age. Now I am not "blaming" her. Nope, I handed her my consent form, because it was easier for me to do that than explore other options. And now I have to deal with the consequences, the recovery and the menopause 'stuff'. And I will do it in as healthy, proactive way as I can. But I learned that although I've made great progress this year in making healthier choices, there's still a ways to go and I still have so much to learn about this body and how to treat it with the reverence and care it deserves :)

I've felt really rough the past few days post surgery. Some pain but mostly just disoriented and feverish--I developed an infection a couple of days afterward.

But this morning I woke up and realized I'd actually had a "normal" sleep for more than 3 hours and my mind felt clear. I took a shower (aah bliss) and although I'm tired now, I am feeling like I am mending :)

And I stepped on the scales--125 which funny enough was my original weight goal when I joined SparkPeople.

This will be my last post before my surgery tomorrow. I won't be posting exercise goals for awhile [grin] but my nutrition goals will be to eat lots of good stuff while decreasing the number of calories because of lack of exercise.

I'll be looking forward to reading about all of your progress though, gang!

Yesterday I was reminded of the importance of looking up restaurant calories BEFORE you eat. We went to Red Lobster for lunch and I ordered the Salmon BLT with freshly cooked potato chips. It was delicious but--ouch--1,110 calories!!! Won't do THAT again!!

Still, I'm back down to 129 after hovering over 130-131 for the past couple of weeks. My continuing focus this week is to get myself ready for Thursday's op and to reconnect with my SparkPeople friends. Oh, and to try to once again declutter ;)

Ouch! That's not something I ever want to have. Although, a girlfriend had it done a few years ago and said it wasn't really too bad. They have developed new procedures over the years and can do them without cutting through the abdominal wall now. Good luck, Val. I'll think good thoughts for you and add you to my prayer list.

I've stayed on track this week ... got three more letters written and mailed. I've also been eating well and exercising daily. I've been having some computer problems this week. We changed internet providers and the transition hasn't gone smoothly. Due to the computer issues I haven't posted all my exercise, but I have kept a paper log of what I've done and hope to get the information transferred from my notebook to my fitness page over the weekend.

Hi guys, back from a week's worth of hostessing. I maintained my weight despite all the restaurants; a good testimony for the power of exercise!!

TERRIE, I'm having a total hysterectomy on Thursday. First time I've ever had an operation so I'm a bit nervous but I've had so many supportive comments and I'm reading up on it, listening to relaxation tapes.... And what I'm most optimistic about is that I'm in really good shape physically so hope to be up and about quickly.

How did we all do on our goals this week? I'm fairly pleased with what I did, what I ate (didn't go overboard).

Val ... sounds like you're getting in plenty of exercise while being a tour guide. It's nice to have someone familiar with the area showing others the local sights.

This is the first time I remember reading about an upcoming surgery for you. Hope it's nothing major and that you heal quickly and well.

TERRI, glad you live on a hill too!!

I am still playing hostess and so my goals this week are mainly to keep my guests happy and get as much exercise in as I can. On Saturday we did a 4-mile hike and almost made it to the top of Kitchen Mesa before a storm hit and drove us back down again. We had really weird weather in Santa Fe over Easter weekend--rain, hail, snow, sun, and lots and lots of wind. On Sunday we went to church and then went for a stroll around downtown Santa Fe which was very quiet--unusual for this tourist town but I really didn't mind.

Today I got up and did 45 minutes of exercise with Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Waist and then spent hours in the car driving friends to various points, ending up in Durango Colorado tonight. Walked a few miles around the town tonight so that my pedo registered 16,000 steps tonight. We're staying here overnight and then going to Mesa Verde tomorrow to see the Pueblo Indian artifacts. We'll be walking around there too.

Back home tomorrow night. Whew, this playing tour guide is tiring! But this is my last full week before I have to prepare for the April 23rd surgery so I am trying to get as much exercise in as possible. Plus, have to admit that I am eating more with friends around.

The Red Cross opened up shelters today. The rivers are rising ... so far the people who live in towns seem to be fairing well. Some basement got a little wet in Foxholm, but aside from that I haven't heard about any problems in towns. The rural folks, on the other hand, aren't doing as well. The river doesn't seem to know any boundaries right now, and the county emergency manager is expecting to have to evacuate some folks. The sheriff has put the reserve deputies on standby for call out to assist with evacuations and water rescues. Have I mentioned how happy I am to live on top of a hill ... a high hill that I sometimes have trouble getting up during the winter when the road is full of snow? The last few days I've been feeling a lot better about that hill than I have during the blizzards when I can't drive up it.

Got a surprise phone call from a close family friend who is serving in Iraq just as we were getting ready to sit down to dinner. That really made my Easter complete!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Pickie, Hope you feel better.

Val, Take Care of yourself

Terrie Joe, Sandbagging is not a fun Easter. We have three rivers that flood. The Mississippi, the Missouri, and the Meramec. I don't live in the flood plan, and really can't imagine the stress of those who do. Lately it seems like we have sandbagging happening almost every year. Nothing this year yet though.

Not my best week in terms of goals. I think I got a little too many, without a strong focus. I do best with one or two main focuses each week. I guess I need to avoid goal clutter. Life just sort of got in the way.

My goals for this week.

Hey PICKIE ... hope you feel better soon.

Enjoy your visit with friends, Val.

I've been busy sandbagging the last couple of days. The next town over is supposed to be underwater tomorrow. What a lousy way to spend your Easter Sunday! The community is doing all we can to help our neighbors. My arms hurt!

Hi gals,

Didn't know whether to post this to the Care Corner but let's all send some good vibes/prayers to PICKIE who is feeling sick. PICKIE, I hope you get well soon!

I didn't go on the sunset hike last night. I just had this feeling not to go. I'd exercised earlier in the day with Leslie and by mid-afternoon I was bushed again.

I have friends arriving this afternoon from Ontario so I'll only be doing check-in postings. So y'all behave yourself while I'm not around, okay??

You've got an large burden your carrying right now. Be kind to yourself. Concentrate on activities that nourish you spirit. I'd think a sunset hike would fit that bill. Take care.

Hi team,
Well, my week has hit a bit of a snag. I've been scheduled for a hysterectomy on April 23rd and the news has sent my body into a kind of pre-op fatigue. I don't understand what's going on, all I know is that I'm feeling really, really tired. I did do Monday's exercise, but not the library stuff. Tuesday I went on a hike that was mercifully short because Tuesday afternoon I was exhausted. Today I had to go for a chest x-ray and bloodwork as part of pre-op and after that I volunteered at the library and then crashed on the couch at home.
I have no idea how I'll feel tomorrow but I am cheerleading you all from the sidelines right now and I hope to be able to do some exercise tomorrow--namely the sunset hike.
Val

Monday, 30 minutes with Leslie and 1 hour of shelving books at the library, eat 1300 calories and keep up with teamwork.
Tuesday, hiking with Tea and Trails, eat 1300 calories and keep up with teamwork.
Wednesday, 30 minutes of exercise either with Leslie or outside walking, eat 1300 calories and keep up with teamwork.
Thursday, sunset hike, eat 1300 calories and keep up with teamwork.
Friday, a gentle 30 minutes with Leslie, eat 1500 calories and meet out-of-town friends who are arriving for the weekend.
Saturday, we'll probably be sightseeing so I'll get my exercise that way, keep track of what I'm eating and stop at 1300-1500 calories, may not have as much time on SP.

* I am a good person, and I deserve respect.
* I choose to respect myself today by refusing to engage in verbal or emotional self-abuse.

I'm still exercising, still writing letters and still trying to get caught up on my posting! Tomorrow I'm baking three batches (six loaves) of Amish Friendship Bread to give to friends for an Easter gift. Today I have a few errands to do ... in addition to my exercising, of course. One of the errands is to pick up Easter cards ... better get them in the mail in a hurry!

I've been getting my exercise and letter writing in, but have fallen behind in posting. I just can't seem to get caught up ... all my Spark Teams have been posting like crazy! I don't want to overlook any posts I get notified about, but my inbox is so full every morning my fingers are getting a lot of exercise.

Since I'm tapering for my half I'm concentration on other things than cardio miles. With my event less than 2 weeks away and decreased mileage all the cardio will get down--even though it looks like I'll be running in the rain. Brrr.

I didn't post my goals but completed my goals everyday. I walked everyday and Weds. - Fri. I actually went on some pretty strenueous half day and day hikes in Yosemite emoticon

This week I will be walking, riding a bike or scootering my girls to and from school everyday but Weds. That is 2 round trips of 4 1/2 miles for me. I will be doing 1 hour of kick boxing Mon.-Sat. and a long walk or hike on Sat.

Congrats on accomplishing your goals last week TRILLIUM and TERRI!

I am fairly pleased with how I did last week except for the two days of bingeing. This week's goals:

Good luck on that half marathon, Trillium22. I'm not that far along yet ... I've been training for the 5K Fun Run/WALK at the Fargo Marathon in May. The way things are going I'm not sure the even is going to happen. Word now is that the Red River is going to rise again in a couple of weeks and will go even higher this time because of all the new snow that will be melting. The marathon route may be underwater.

Sunday 29MAR ... 30 minutes cardio, 53 minutes yoga and balance games ... emoticon

Monday 30MAR ... 30 minutes cardio, one Leslie walk (5K With a Twist), 30 minutes strength training ... emoticon

Tuesday 31MAR ... 45 minutes cardio, one Lelsie walk (Big Burn) 15 minutes yoga ... emoticon

Wednesday 01APR ... 45 minutes cardio, one Leslie walk (5K With a Twist), 15 minutes yoga ... emoticon

Thursday 02APR ... one Leslie walk, two letters written and mailed, 80 minutes on the Wii ... emoticon

Friday 03APR ... One Lelsie walk, one letter written (but not mailed; I'm out of stamps), 60 minutes on the Wii ... Sunday 29MAR ... 30 minutes cardio, 53 minutes yoga and balance games ... emoticon

Saturday 04APR ... One Leslie walk, one letter written, two letters mailed (got those stamps!) 1 hour bowling, 75 minutes on the Wii ... emoticon

My April goal is to stay brave as my half marathon approaches. My logical part says I'm ready and have trained well. My insecure part is -- well insecure. Maybe I need to work on some positive visualization or something. Hmm.. I'll have to get more concrete on that.

Edited to add

Okay for this week I'll track my food completely 4times and meditate twice

Johal, Your at goal weight right. I'd think you'd have room for an occasional piece of pecan pie on a hiking day. It is good to see how much it throws off your nutritional stats---so you don't make it a regular habit. emoticon

Wednesday - Hike with hiking group, stay on nutrition plan, same teamwork. Two out of three--hiked and stuck with my teamwork but a piece of pecan pie was my downfall on the nutrition plan. Sent it off the charts. emoticon

Thursday, Some gentle exercise for 30 minutes, stay on nutrition plan, same teamwork

Friday, 30 minutes with Leslie's Abs or Waist workout, same teamwork, stay on nutrition plan

Saturday, 30 minutes with an exercise DVD, same teamwork, stay on nutrition plan

Oh and I have another goal. I am hoping to get to 10,000 points by next Wednesday. I think I can do this as I am averaging about 80 points/day. I was hoping to get to 10,000 today but that was before I realized what my maximum input could be (unless I get an amazing spin on the Points Wheel a few mornings a week).

I agree, April seems like a good time to begin again, and it just so happens to coincide with a "Biggest Loser" contest my school is starting. Each contestant pays $10 up front and $2 each week after with weekly weigh-ins with the school nurse. Our contest runs through the end of school (May 22). Hoping it will give my motivation a kick.

I was supposed to do a 5K Heart Walk last Saturday. I was really looking forward to it as it was the first charity walk I'd ever signed up for, and I'd managed to raise $150.00. Wouldn't you know, we had freak SLEET and SNOW on Saturday!!! The organizers moved the walk indoors, but it was over an hour away and my husband didn't want me driving in the weather. What a bummer!!!

So goals for April are to use my tax refund wisely (pay off a few bills), get back to consistent exercise, and finally scrapbook my wedding photos (long overdue).

I did get in 30 minutes this morning!

Yep, TRILLIUM, visualizing sounds like a great idea!! Do you have some running photos you really like? Post them where you can see them. Don't forget to focus a lot on stretching too these days. When you get nervous, you tense your muscles up and it's harder for them to move. So consciously breathe (your meditating is another good idea) and s-t-t-r-r-e-t-t-c-h and imagine those wonderful muscles that you've been developing getting ready to do their work!

I love spring. The buds on the trees, the new flower poking up through the ground, the reappearance of the grass after a winter of white ground. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of those things yet. We are still buried under a ton of snow. At least I'm not in the part of North Dakota that is having flooding problems.

I have set a personal goal to write 10 letters to friends this month. My husband and I spent over 20 years traveling the world in the air force and have friends all over the United States and in a few foreign countries. We don't get to see them as often as we would like. The letters will be hand written and mailed out so they can actually hold the letters as they read them. They will also include family snap shots. Many of them haven't seen our son since he was a toddler and he is now a senior in high school.

Of course I intend to keep working on my health and fitness goals as well. I will continue with the exercise habits I have developed and continue to follow my nutrisystem eating plan. Both have served me well so far, and I hope they continue to do so. It would be nice to be able to start walking outside before the month of April is over, but at the rate the snow isn't melting around here, and with another blizzard on it's way, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever take another walk outside!

April is really about New Beginnings for me. My children go back to school. I get back to my life and having a little time for myself rather than having to squeeze it in. I will be getting back into a regular routine of getting the children off to school but with a twist. My girls live 2.3 miles from the school they go to. I have already told them we will not be taking a motorized vehicle other than on Weds. to school. We will scooter, bike or maybe even walk. We have done the scootering and biking before but only my youngest has walked and she only home on a day I put the car in the shop and then walked back to the school to get her. Wednesdays don't work for us with that because my son has late starts so does his piano lessons right after I drop the girls off and they are across town. Wednesday is a hard day for me to get my workouts in but I will get at least an hour before school.

I also need to get a lot more in on my gardening and will do that when the children are back in school as well.

I am also planning on a lot of spring cleaning.

I also hope to get some spiritual feasting in as well.

Whether you're a Christian or not, you can't help knowing that, at least in the Northern hemisphere, Spring is really the time that a new year begins. Life springs from the earth, the suns gets stronger and sinks into our bones again, baby animals are born....

So, I'm waxing philosophic but, I've been thinking that April CAN be a time of new beginnings for us. Let's make April's Challenge meaningful to US. Your most important goals may not be about exercise or eating healthy--they may be about getting in touch with yourself again, rediscovering something that you long ago lost touch with. Or, maybe not--maybe your goals are still to be consistent on your journey toward health. Whatever they are, let this team be a part of it. Let's support one another, get to know one another. That's my goal for April--along with maintaining the gains I've made thus far and facing any health "news" I receive next Friday with optimism :)
