I think my biggest challenge is staying on track while celebrating a birthday, or eating out. Dinner at home I can manage (since I'm the cook, I am in control). A little trickier are the drug rep lunches we get at our office 3 to 5 times a week! It's hard to turn down 2 boxes of Krispy Kremes, but I've managed to do just that, so far. . .

I can forsee that I may develope a challenge of staying motivated. I'm glad Spark Phase 3 deal s with this--very helpful. But it HAS to beocme a lifestyle, I recognize that now.

And I will--WILL--do it. I just see that it will be challenging at times.

Sticking with it is my biggest challenge. Going slow has kept me from getting discouraged and given me the chance to challenge myself as my confidence grows.

1/2 cup of most cooked veggies is a serving. Or you can do 4 oz of V-8 juice instead.

Raw veggies are a little different. I'm not sure of the guidelines on those, but I do know that a serving is smaller than most of us think. I thought I couldn't get it all in either until I tried and really measured everything out and it was more than I normally eat, but a lot less than I thought.

One good way to get in your fruits and veggies is to use juices, use them as snacks or desserts, or chop them up and add them to salads. Something I discovered recently is that chopped strawberries and blueberries are great in a green salad with a tangy dressing (like Italian or vinaigrette). It was quite a wonderful flavor explosion on the tongue and a very satisfying meal.

Just some thoughts on those of you struggling with fruits and veggies.

I also think fruits/veggies are my biggest challenge. I like them, I just can't seem to fit that many servings in each day. Maybe I'm considering a "serving" larger that I need to. Is it a cup of veggies? I know most fruit (appple, banana, orange, etc.) Anyway, I'm just not that hungry...

Biggest challenge today--dear friend who says "just go ahead and have a small piece" when I have clearly said and experience that (for now at least) I'm totally experiencing addiction cravings. I dont just want a piece--I want to get 'drunk' on sweets! So having some seems like a really bad idea!

But it sounds so reasonable...

I did my work out at the gym, cardio & weights today. Total work out was 90 mins. Then I had 6 veggies and 1 fruit today. More fruit tomorrow. (remember I am 6 to 9 hours ahead of all of you)
Keep up the good work.. emoticon

My biggest challenge would have to be the weekends. I seem to slip on everything. I don't eat right, I don't drink enough water & I don't exercise enough!

During the week, I'm fine. I pack my lunch & snacks for work, carry a water bottle & stay away from the vending machines. I also do at least 1/2 hr of cardio every evening during.

I also have a sweet tooth that I'm struggling with.

I find my biggest issue/s (depending on the day) is making time to exercise. I don't know why I used to be very fit and flexible through high school, college and my early adulthood. I enjoy being active. But I make excuses about doing for others. Make the dinner, clean up the dinner, get the groceries, mow the lawn. I have a million of them. I do have my son and fiance help. They both help me. But I do't feel like a good Mom I guess unless unless I am providing care. I need to get over that mostly.
The other is craming things into my mouth of an evening when I feel like I am 'done' with everything. Usually in front of the TV.
Probably if I could just increase my activity each week and lay off eating anything after 6:30 or 7:00 PM I'd be well on my way.
Why can't I? Knowing It and Doing It just don't equal.

I found out I need a plan. I really need to plan my foodintake and dinnertimes beforehand. If I don't make a plan, I will start to eat unhealthy foods. So, making a plan is my biggest challenge. I sometimes believe I can do without one, but it'll always backfire.

I guess having a certain routine is just like having a plan, that's why you relly need to have a plan in the weekends as well.

Night time is when i look to munch if i am restless, bored or have an empty feeling if i have eaten supper early.
I love apples so will often have an apple or 2. Hot Air popcorn is satisfying too with a little Braggs sprayed on it.
Knitting helps too.
I used like to have a beer to unwind but now I have Bengal Spice tea with some milk instead,it has a natural sweetness to it.
Have a restful night SP Class.

Night eating seems to be a common challenge. That's one that I have as well, so I try to plan a healthy snack at night. I'm not always successful - but I'm getting better.

Eating at night. I am horrible with that. I also stay up way too late, so sometimes I have a snack at 10 or 11 PM.

Sweets are a big problem for me. I don't just crave them, I have to have them. I have always said It feels like a vampire needing blood, I need sweets. I know it is all in my head but I have a very hard time fighting it. Worse yet lately I can't seem to motivate myself to exercise.

Someone mentioned inconsistency, and that's so me. I'm going to grad school right now and it's really hard to work, go to class, do homework, be a mom, be a wife, and exercise. So I can go out and walk for an hour, and that's easy enough, but I can't manage to do it regularly. 60 minutes spread out over the whole week would be better than just all in one shot.

My biggest challenge is focusing on immediate goals. If I start thinking about all the weight I need to lose to be healthy (100+) I psych myself out.. and get discouraged. At that point it is just a few short steps to "Why bother" and abandoning the healthy habits.

Fast Break has helped me stay motivated for week 1, and it was successful... so here's to week 2. (yikes, we are halfway through already!)

I have the hardest time during the weekends. Not when I'm cooking at home, but when we have a party to go to, or some type of event, that is when I tend to "fall off the wagon". During the week I do pretty good because I pack my lunches for work and bring the appropriate snacks with me to work.

Food in general is my challenge. When I quit smoking, it was gone -- it wasn't part of my daily routine, and I didn't need it to survive. When my fridge is full, I eat sensibly -- but when I'm short on groceries, I eat the weirdest (and most unhealthy) combinations just to fill the gap. And if someone else did the cooking, or planned the meals, I'd have a much easier time of it! emoticon

My weakness is candy. I've got a sweet tooth and I love to feed it, especially when driving on long trips. I've got a two-hour drive to my National Guard armory this weekend, and I often polish off a bag of Twizzlers on the way home. NOT THIS TIME!!!

Hi,I am a night eater as well.To keep myself motivated,I have alot of deterants.I keep a picture of myself on the fridge.I post motivational quotes on the fridge, cabinets, anywhere that I might find something that is not good for me.My family is supportive and eating more fruits and veggies with me but still not willing to give up the cookie, cakes, chips, etc.I would say that the biggest thing that helps is that when I started this lifestyle change,I designated a cabinet away from the food pantry,a shelf in the fridge and one crisper drawer in the fridge only for me.That way when I do get the munchies at least I'm only eating what is best for me,and I don't see everything I want but know I shouldn't have.I hope these ideas help you.

I am a Night Eater as Well. I used to think that since my weakness was chocolate, by getting rid of the chocolate in the house It would be "Out of Sight, Out of Mind." That could not be farther from the truth. I just craved it more! And when I would finally buy a box of chocolates, I would eat the whole box in a single setting. So, I started keeping my favorite things, like Godiva and snickers on hand, and now I eat 1 serving of Godiva ( 3 truffles) or a Snickers bar usually daily. That has really helped eliminate those cravings.

I still overeat them sometimes, but it's more like having 2 or 3 servings instead of eating an entire box! So, I am much happier.

Christy M.

I hope you can focus on why you shouldn't binge eat at night. Well, not in the daytime either, which is my big problem at the moment ;-)

Does it help to get rid of all the food you shouldn't eat and do you think it will help to 'binge' on grapes, carrots and bell pepper? That way you can eat out of boredom, but don't gain the pounds.

Although I usually 'start' with the healthy stuff when I feel a craving for eating, but I end with the bad stuff. Still no clue how to stop in time, hope you can!

Ninermine, do you go to bed while being hungry or do you wake up in th emiddle of the night with the fridge in your mind? I want to change my response, I think my biggest challenge will be weekends. At work I take my lunch so once it's gone that's it, no more food but at home if I'm hungry I'll eat.

Silver -

You have the key in your post. I keep hoping at some point that exercise will be fun, that I'll enjoy it, that those endorphins will come flooding in.

It never seems to happen. When I was whining about it to another friend, she said very matter-of-factly: "Sandi, you don't have to LIKE it...You just have to DO IT."

Lightbulb.

So, I'm now using my work calendar to SCHEDULE time for me to track my food intake and exercise, and I'm repeating JUST DO IT (apologies to Nike) to myself when that inner whining child comes out to play.

I lost 35 lbs. with that mantra in 2005; when I stopped telling myself that, I got lazy. But the good thing now is - I know I CAN do it, because I HAVE DONE it before.

Good luck!

I'm not a good self motivator. If I don't have someone to do stuff with, it seems almost impossible for me to do it.

The diet changes are only because my husband is willing to buy into most of it. Though he has certain foods he will not give up, and so I eat them too. Not going to spend all that time preparing two separate meals.

As for exercise, that just seems like an impossibility. On weekends when we are both out of work we almost always go walking, but the fact is we only have about 1 day off together each week, and that is not enough. And none of my friends are local to me, so I struggle to self motivate, but so far I continue to fail.

My biggest challange is just doing it. I set up weekly workout plans. I have the house filled with nice healthy food. I have everything in place, but I find it very hard to just do it.

Right now, I find my biggest challenge to be stress. I have a lot of things going on and the stress isn't helping to keep me motivated. But I'm still doing it day by day, sticking with it, as hard as it is right now. Some days I don't get enough calories othere I get too much, but I'm still working on it, and doing my exercises. So I will get there in due time.

My Weight Watcher's group had a great analogy.

So, when you take the wrong exit when driving somewhere new, do you keep driving in the same direction all night? Or do you immediately change course, backtrack, and get going where you plan to be?

I find that thought process useful when I've made a mistake.

This is NOT ALL OR NOTHING. It's progress, not perfection.

There are three strategies I've used:

1) Get chewing gum. You can't eat when you've got gum.
2) Brush your teeth. I don't wanna eat when my teeth are minty fresh. :)
3) Eat something the OPPOSITE of what you want. So, if I want sweet, I'll eat a dill pickle. the sour cancels out the sweet craving.

I had trouble with that since I'm a tv addict but I found that if I walk the 5 ks to work that help to wake me up and gives me my cardio for the day (usually takes me about 45 minutes which is only 20 minutes more than it takes to drive in, find a park and walk from my car to work.)

My biggest challenge is going to be exercising routinely. I am going to have to start off in small chunks that I can work into a routine/habit in my life. When I think about exercising even for only 30 minutes per day every day, I know I will not stick to it. So I am going to have to find ways to ease that in. I have claimed for years that I get my exercise through work, housekeeping, and chasing kids. As it warms up outside it will also become easier for me. I will also have to find ways to make exercise fun.

My biggest challenge is consistency. I might do great for 4 days and then indulge for a couple of days negating all the work.

Snacking late at night after 8 is a problem sometimes for me too, so I am really trying to not do that anymore.

I have a major sweet tooth, so I have to learn to control it a little better...just a few pieces of chocolate truffles or a candy bar a day instead of a large piece of cake every day. I will start saving cake for weekends unless it's homemade!

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can
understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

My biggest challenge by far is not eating in front of the TV at night, and not eating after 8ish. This has been a HUGE issue for me! I am going to try and replace this for a walk on the treadmill and a relaxing stretch. We'll see how it goes

He's an Electrician. He's working in Alberta WAY up north on a new oil plant. 24 days on, 8 days off. If you work on it Im sure you will develop a sense of pacing on the track. I might suggest running for a while on the treadmill until you are in a grove - ie. a comfortable pace then switch to the track trying to maintain the same pace. Just an idea =)

What does your hubby do? I know what you mean about the lunch workouts. That is when I get mine in most of the time. Hubby is still at work at that time when he is actually home, so I can gt my time in then. Weekends are harder though. Trying to mix up the gym routine can be hard too. Hubby likes to run on the track outdoors where as I am the more indoorsy gym girl because I need the treadmill to help with my pacing. :)

Im totally with you on wanting the world to stop when your husband is home. Im the same and my husband is only gone for 3 weeks at a time! Although he is super supportive of me and my goals he is not a gym rat or physical guy at all so join me at the gym is not his idea of a nice way to spend his 7 days at home. When it warms up we're going to get bikes so we can go for rides together after dinner. For now I just cancel my long sunday run on the week he is home and work a bit harder during my lunch hour work outs during the week.

My biggest challenge is getting back on track after a little slip up. I tend to think that just because I had a few slices of pizza my whole diet is ruined. Then I tend to use that as the excuse not to exercise or stay on track. This time however, I've got my fiance to hopefully give me that little boost when I need it.

Thanks for the suggestion:) I will have to look into that when we move. My hubby started to pursue a MM career, but then decided to go back to the CG instead. My hubby supports me in all of my goals and dreams. He and I are both able to use the gym on the base whenever we want during their open hours which is nice. He and I will definitely be hitting the gym together more often or doing more outdoor activities together so we can lose the weight and still be together.

Dawninnc34, maybe you can keep motivated by surrounding you with things that'll remind you of your goals. A picture of you being the way you would like to be, or a quote you love on a whiteboard, well, anything that will visualize your goals for you and were you'll see it every day.

I do hope your attention span for sparkpeople will last a bit longer than a month, so get involved in the community and make friends so you don't feel like leaving again.

ALLY96 - I can understand that! My husband used to be a merchant seaman and would be gone for months at a time. I just wanted to stop the world when he was home and stay with him. However, does he support you in your fitness goals? If so, maybe he would be willing to go with you and the gym might be willing to consider a lower rate for him or allowing him to come as a guest if he's gone so much. Just a thought!

You all have some real challenges facing you.

MADDMAX250 and Shanna - I can relate to getting to the gym being a problem. When I could afford it, it was so hard to motivate myself to go. Anyone have any suggestions?

SERAPHINA666 - My husband is not underweight, but like your boyfriend can eat anything he wants and not gain weight. We've been married almost 27 years and he still weighs the same as he did back then. I can certainly relate to your challenge. See if you can't get him to try some of the wonderful recipes on here. He can eat a larger portion - or get him to join so he can gain weight in a healthy manner since sparkpeople isn't just for those who want to lose weight.

Matthew - I have some physical activity limitations as well due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Just keep at it. It will be slow, but so worth it.

MYTHOS - Oh my. You do have some challeneges. I remember when my 4 children were very small we would take them for a walk each day no matter the weather. Some days it was shorter than others. Since you have a special needs child, though, I'm not sure that would work. Is there some other form of exercise you could do that all the children could join in?

HEAVENLYDREAM - Binge eating moments are tough. With sparkpeople I find I can actually plan for it. If I log in and put something in that I shouldn't have eaten and find my calorie level is way up, then I try to eat lower calorie foods the rest of the day. I know there are some good articles on the site regarding binge eating with some good suggestions. You might try looking around and doing a search for binge-eating.

Shanna - Mountain Dew, huh? Hmmmm..... well it does have caffeine in it which is addictive. Maybe you need to wean yourself slowly? I don't know what else to tell you on this one except that I know sodas in general are really not good because they have so many calories in them.

Good luck everyone. Let us know how you're doing with your various challenges.

Maybe I can help with suggestions and tips for exercising. I went from a mainly sedentary person to a very active person :) I do a lot of things I never thought I'd ever do and I even enjoy them a lot ;) I do strength training at the gym, I run/jog and I attend Les Mills classes (bodycombat, bodypump and bodyjam).

My biggest challenge to achieving my goals is learn how to deal with my binge-eating moments. Some days I just can't resist the psychological urge/craving to eat. It's stronger than me and I feel so sad about it. I am terribly afraid I'll gain all lost pounds because of it.

My biggest challenge is finding the time and the motivation to exercise. I have 3 kids under the age of four, one with special needs and one very snuggly/needy baby so often when I get a moment to myself I like to relax.

I also have sleep disorder issues so I find that I'm very tired throughout the day regardless of my activity level and it's hard to resist a nap (often after meals!) which is totally counterproductive to losing weight. I'm still breastfeeding though, so that helps with the burn.
