Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly, Eve. I'm working my way to 60 and hope by then to be in moderately good health. I look at some of the young people on here, wanting to lose 5+ pounds a week and be like the people they see on television, on The Biggest Loser, and feel badly for "youth" and think about what I would have done back then if I knew what I know now :-)

I've found (for me anyway) that some of the books you can find out there on Diet and Healthy Living are just great, like "Fit for Life for Women." I highly recommend it. But for me, I can't just change my entire life overnight and think I'm going to stay happy. I think life has to have little rewards now and then. Which is probably why my life has not gone from 25 pounds overweight to being slim and perfectly healthy in a great timeframe. I'm still plodding along, making very slow headway. But I'm happy, I don't look obese, and I am addressing any health problems that come up. Being a Retired Senior isn't all peaches and cream, or fun and roses or whatever. Sometimes it's boring, sometimes it's depressing, but we all have things we could do that would make our lives better. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and take the bull by the horns so to speak. Enjoy Life -- It's the Only One You've Got!

How far have people come since February/the beginning of the year?

I like February because I first started looking at seriously losing weight on February 20, 2006. I'd vacationed down in Hollywood, Florida, and had found Kathleen Daelemans' "Chef Kathleen's Cooking Thin Daybook: A 52-week plan to lose weight, get fit, and eat right" book and it was just what I'd been wishing for.

Her books and Web site are really good and she herself was overweight (and this is what she did about it):

Her whole story just inspired me. I got to May :-) and then wimped out but started up again briefly in August (still 2006) when I was having a hard time with my asthma and was trying to fix that nutritionally.

But it's a great book for recording what you eat, etc. if you want something to carry around with you and it has recipes, notes, ideas, etc. It's not dated (other than "Week 1", "Week 2", "Week 3", etc.)so you can just skip time and "start over" later in the book. But there's a cookbook that goes with the daybook too.

your recipe for the scallops sounds absolutely delcious; and even though hubby says he's not crazy about scallops, I love them, so I'll be making that one day soon. Your evening sounds great!

Yes, you are in much better shape now than you were just a short time ago. It's when the compliments start coming in that it really gives you the push that you need. That is wonderful! I'm proud of you.

Yep - it's the good old weekend again. Last night I barbecued large scallops wrapped in bacon and skewered on rosemary branches. Mmmm good. I also drank 4 glasses of good white wine. Woke up this morning and gained a pound and it is only Saturday morning. I haven't been exercising consistently so I need to pick that back up again. I will try harder than I normally do this weekend too. What keeps me going now are the wonderful comments people make like "wow, you're looking good". I haven't heard that in a few years and it is a heady experience. I live for that and it makes me put down the food. Now if I could just resist the beer and wine on the weekends better. Maybe I will when I lose more and I get more and more wonderful comments about my weight loss.

Judy, I'm happy to report I didn't give up with my huge weight gain -- I had hubby take me out dancing instead, and lost 1.6 pounds = 156.0, so that made me feel a whole lot better.

I'll try to do better over the week-end than I normally do too.

I think the most important thing is we are still here Eve. Keep on striving for consistency on exercising and watching the unnecessary calories and we will be fine. I love SP and I am not discouraged even though my weight loss is really slow. Thank you for not giving up.

Couldn't start off February the way I wanted as my face was all swollen up with an allergic reaction to a new medication..... but today I made it over there and got in 25 minutes of treadmill, varying from 2% to 15% elevation, and then I did my strength training. To top that off I danced several fast dances tonight while we were out. So today was a very good day for me!

Awesome- I'm in. An activity every day -big or small - and walking for 30 minutes 3 times a week is great. It will be interesting to see what the results are at the end of the month. That'd be great to compile the posts and then compare the results.

OK gals, didn't receive any feedback on this, so I'm just making up the February Challenge on my own. You can submit ideas for March, April, etc.

For February Only:
1) walk for 30 minutes 3 times per week
2) days you don't walk, exercise at least 15 minutes
on other types of exercise than walking.

With this challenge hopefully we will lose some serious pounds. Don't start posting until Feb. 1st
If you like I'll keep track of all the posts and let you know the results.
