Cheesecake and chocolate. Add chips and ice cream and you have my big food triggers. I have now been on my food plan for 9 weeks. I haven't had ice cream at all nor have I had cheesecake. I have eaten chocolate and chips but have been able to take a "serving" and leave the rest alone. I want to be able to do that. I met my February goal yesterday - 165. I want to lose another 5 in March.

I have a theory of why one gains so much weight from one unfortunate meal. Water! When you eat off plan, the food is not what you normally eat and the body holds on to water for a day or two to see if you will need it. Fat cells are actually mostly water. When you go back to eating on plan, the body gives up the water fairly quickly.

Consider yourself lucky! If only I didn't love & crave chocolate...anything chocolate...LOL. And I LOVE cheescake, so I can never go there & not split a piece with DH!

LMAO! I don't have that much willpower, Eve -- the truth is "I don't like cheesecake." How un-female is that??? I don't like chocolate either. I could have a plate of fudge in front of me and never eat a bite -- or a big chocolate cake. Now if it happened to be chocolate covered raisins or chocolate covered nuts of some type -- I'd be after them!

I was still up 1.4 pounds over my Jan. 1st and Feb.1st weight as of yesterday and that was totally disgusting. I'm wasting my life away! But when I got on the scale this morning -- even with the Cheesecake Factory, I was down to 145.6 so now I'm only over by 0.6 pounds. I'd better be on my best behavior today and tomorrow so my "monthly weigh in" will not be a disaster. To think that before my company arrived I was at 143.4. AARGH!

Oh yes, drat it, it is so much easier to gain it than to lose it! I watched my diet closely the next day & took off 1.2 pounds of it!
I am jealous..."The Cheesecake Factory" is our favorite restaurant, unfortunately, there is not one any closer than Houston, hey, wait, maybe that is fortunate! LOL. what , no cheesecake? Not even the diet one? Wow, girl, you have willpower!

Isn't it amazing, Eve, that you can slip up and gain 2 whole pounds with one meal? Does that mean if one pound equals 3500 calories that you ate 7,000 calories that you didn't burn? It is reasoning like that that makes me doubt the truth of that 3500 cal. thing. I know I've gained a pound or so, but why, why, why can't we lose it as fast as it went on???

I'm like you though, company being here saw me in restaurants a lot more than I liked, so I just have to admit to making bad choices and go on with life. I hope I can at least be down to what I was at the beginning of the month. Then it will be like I just lost a whole month of being healthy -- but if I show a gain (yikes) then I'll actually be behind! I went out again today and ate at the Cheesecake Factory! Had some new yummy crab/artichoke dip and also got the avocado eggrolls. They are to die for. And if all of that wasn't bad enough, I had a Long island Ice Tea (which is anything BUT ICED TEA!) to drink.

Trying to find the silver lining in all the clouds!

When a slip happens, the thing to do is learn from it. If you really want cake, you should have it but try to share a piece or eat part of it and bring the rest home (then try to get someone else to eat it). One book I am reading says that the most satisfaction from eating a food comes in the first 2 bites. Eat them slowly and really appreciate the flavor, texture, etc. Then stop. Eating more will not significantly increase the pleasure you get from this food.

Some folks find that it is very helpful to decide what they will eat before they go to a restaurant. Some don't even look at the menu. For some of us, that is the easiest way to make a healthy choice.

Oh well, you don't like it, but it is over, you have learned, move on, and forgive yourself.

I feel like a bad little girl that needs to be punished! I was doing so good...then yesterday went out to eat with DH & ended up eating an enchilada & beans & if that wasn't bad enough, a piece of dark chocolate cake! Gasp...why on earth did I do that? Woke up this morning to a nearly 2 pound weight gain...sigh...I simply cannot eat that kind of food anymore & get away with it, so back to the right track tomorrow!

Today was nice. I walked Joey early. We have lovely birds that visit us every few years--cedar waxwings--and the first arrived this week. They are amazing and every time we go out, we look for them. On Joey's walk, I saw group after group fly in and alight in a tree just across from us. They are quite small, very pretty and fly in amazing formations. I called DH who biked over to where we were. They had left the tree by then but he did get to see 2 or 3 groups fly over. He followed them and saw them one street over eating berries.

Later DH and I went out on the bikes. We had a lovely ride. Then at 1pm there was an art lecture in the village at the ballroom. We have them throughout the "season" about once a month. It is always a nice lecture. I also saw some friends and chatted a bit.

I did some work with computers which started to frustrate me. It took longer than I wanted, but I was able to calm down and get balanced again. Later I finished the computer stuff (at least for today).

Then after dinner, my sister came over with a 9 pound whole sirloin and we ground it for hamburger. It was only $1.69 a pound, it had no bones, very little waste, and very little fat. Now I am making a huge pot of chili and the rest is in our freezers.

Last night I tried a recipe I found here on SP. I made my own yogurt from skim milk in my crock pot. Then today I strained it so it is Greek yogurt--really thick and silky. So I am officially a domestic goddess! LOL

Life is good. Today was warm and wonderful. Today is puppy Joey's first birthday. We went to the dog park. Last night we went to the county fair. Nothing special but a pleasant evening. After a week of no change, the scale was nice and went down this morning. My aunt called and we (DH, sister, and I) are meeting her and uncle for dinner on Wednesday.

Let's all have a fabulous week.

Eve,

I completely understand the problems associated with eating out. Do the best you can with your selections, don't feel you need to eat more that you really need and want, and remember that this too will pass. In a very short time you will be back to your healthy eating and in time your weight will reflect your commitment.

I managed to get over to the gym tonight and that was really nice -- got in over a mile on the treadmill, then did weights and some leg and arm exercises. Felt good about all of that. I would have also gone swimming but it was getting late, and I don't want to eat after 7:00 (as it was I think it was about 7:30 before we ate). Worried about those scales creeping up.

Today was busy. Got up and started laundry, then breakfast and cookie baking. I did two loads of laundry-wash-dry-fold-put away. I made low sugar cookies for DH. Chocolate made with healthy ingredients such has whole grain flour, applesauce in place of part of the oil, and pecans--then added a few white chocolate chips for a treat. They are seriously good and HD loves them. I made chocolate biscotti which have no oil, used whole grain flour, a low calorie sweetener (not artificial) and lots of chopped almonds. Then I put a chocolate glaze on them using 85% chocolate candy. So good.

Next we biked to the gym, did 30 minutes of weight work, biked home for a total of 45 minutes on the bike, then walked Joey--ending up at his play date. Now we are off to the dog park.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Haven't read your blog yet, Ann, but I will. This morning I worked at the Library -- didn't sleep well last night and I really need my 8 hours or I drag. I will catch up tonight.

I'll have a little more time tomorrow. But it's hard with company here.

Today has been much about deep and interesting thoughts. I did a blog entry today about some of it. I have tended to think that life is complicated. I am starting to see that it is really very easy. We make it complicated.

Pickleball is tennis light. It is played on a smaller court (can even be inside), generally played as doubles, uses a solid racket somewhat like a larger ping pong racket and a whiffleball. Lots of fun and easier than tennis.

Today was pleasant. Got a lot of exercise in and took Joey the puppy for a play date with a little 3 month old poodle. They had a really good time.

Tomorrow is busy. I play pickleball (in the cold) 8:30-10:00. Then 11:00 to 1:00 is my volunteer CAPS time. Then we need to go shopping. I will try to get Joey's walk in between PB and CAPS.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Tonight we went to a golf cart parade for Fat Tuesday. We took Joey the puppy and is was nice. It was sunny today and I had a lovely walk in the early afternoon but once the sun started to go down, it got really cold. We bundled up and did alright but we didn't stay long. We walked around and talked to people we knew and we went to see all the parade entries as they were lining up. So we left shortly after the parade started and missed the traffic.

Well, after two days of being on carbs for my evening meal instead of a big green salad is that my scale is heading toward bigger numbers instead of smaller. I don't like that aspect. After all, the whole reason for wanting to avoid the munchies is that it causes me to go over on calories. If I'm going to gain weight anyway (without munching) then why bother? I'm not gaining anyfrom the effort except more weight!

I'll try your tip, Eve, and see if it will make a difference. I just don't like the direction in which the scales are heading. So far it's still in the 144 range, but right now it's in the high end.

Speaking of "salads", I am supposed to eat one every day, but it has been so cold of late, that I just find myself not wanting salad....so I opt for a big bowl of homemade vegetable soup with brown rice, tides me over nicely! A "hint" that I find helps with staying full with the salads is to add beans to them...

I realized last night that instead of eating a big green salad even though I add fruit and nuts, was leaving me with the munchies during the entire evening. And last night I just was not in the mood for salad, so I sauteed some veggies and cooked up a few ounces of a spinach/garlic pasta that I had on hand. After cooking and draining the pasta, I added it to the veggies, sprinkled on a bit of olive oil and topped it off with freshly ground parmesan. It was fantastic, and viola! no munchies all evening.
Just to be sure, I did a similar dish tonight, with the same result. My salad was just not giving me any "holding power" I needed more carbs to get thru the evening! Wow! Guess this was my ah-ha! moment.

Today is a beautiful day, sunny and warm, so I really felt like getting out. Did my exercise early, walked the dog, road my bike to the fitness center, did weight work for 20 minutes. Then I came home and had a great lunch. Later this afternoon we will be going to the dog park.

I am working on my attitude. I am being more positive and living each day for that day and everything is going better for me.

Not feeling well always makes things difficult. I pray you will be feeling completely healthy soon.

I don't know what is wrong with me the last week or so. Just can't seem to get motivated. Perhaps it's the cold that's been nagging at me, I don't know, but I hope it ends soon. Today the temp got up to 86 degrees. I did go out in the yard late in the afternoon, it was almost dark and trimmed off several of the bougainvillea branches that are starting to bud out. They can get really long and out of hand. And I see that my lawn needs to be mowed yet again -- it grows like crazy.

Sorry to be saying this to all you folks who are suffering through winter. I had my share of that, and I suppose that's one of the reasons I chose a climate like this for retirement.

It is cold again here and is expected to stay cold until at least Friday. I find it very difficult to get my exercise when it's cold. I like to walk or bike outside and when it's cold it's difficult to do it. When it's cold and rainy I even find it difficult to get to the gym. Fortunately this afternoon the sun was shining brightly and although the air was cool it was good walking weather. I got nearly 3 miles in and enjoyed it very much. I find myself looking forward to spring but then I think I'm not enjoying today enough. So I am going to try to enjoy every day no matter what the weather. And I am going to try to get my exercise in no matter what the weather.

Eve--I make hot lemonade when my throat isn't feeling the best. In fact I am drinking some now. My throat is OK but with the cold weather and lot of folks around me fighting viruses, it makes me feel good to get extra vitamin C and I find it soothing.

MC--My life isn't what I would call exciting but I find things to do. I was somewhat MIA as I got a new computer and have been busy getting everything set up and moved onto it. My computer acted up twice in a month and I decided to get a new one before it up and died on me. I use it a lot including doing all of my bill paying, etc. and I would hate to have it die. It is over 6 years old so I got my money's worth out of it. I really like the new Windows 7.

Wednesday I rearranged furniture. Thursday I played Pickleball and then did my volunteer CAPS duties. Yesterday we went shopping to the health food store for supplements, to Best Buy for the new computer, and then we had lunch at Olive Garden. It was raining lightly. We got home just a few minutes before the hard rain came. Today we went to the gym for weight work and most days I walk the dog and we take him to the dog park in the afternoons where we socialize with the other dog owners. When it is nice I like to ride my bike and walk without the dog.

I know what you mean, Mattie Charlene! But I suppose most would say that at 79 if you are all that healthy, that in itself is a lot to be thankful for. My sister is 81 and until last month, although she is overweight, she had no other problems. No high cholesterol, no blood pressure problems -- so basically all that seemed wrong with her was that she is 5'3 (shorter actually because she has shrunk) but must weigh around 200 lbs. And it caught up with her last month. She had a heart attack and they had to insert a stent (like with Pres. Clinton) and she says she feels very tired.
I'm 71, which is no big deal, and usually feel very healthy, except right now when I am not so sick I have to lay around in bed, but I just don't feel wonderful -- like I'm battling a cold that hasn't quite shown itself as yet. I don't mind having a few days in my life where nothing happens, it's better than being on the run 24/7 like some of the snowbirds I know. Well, I guess we each have our own version of the "perfect lifestyle" don't we? It is good that we aren't all alike.

My days pass without much excitement, Today was no exception. Quick trip to MD with a friend; had the new MD (the one I had has moved on) freeze a mole I wanted to get rid of, and change from one med which made my legs cramp to another which was not supposed to. At age 79 I am so healthy I am ashamed to tell my age. I mixed drinks for my friend and I this evening and made mine strong enough to get myself ready for bed. Hope the rest of you have had a more entertaining day and will tell us all about it.

I'm warm but I'm sure how well. I thought I had this cold/sore throat thing beat, so yesterday I went to a movie "Edge of Darkness" and I liked it.
But by 8:30 last night the sore throat was back and my whole body ached. So I went to bed. Had to rush this morning as I woke up with barely enough time to get to the Library before my shift started. By noon I was dragging again. Duh! What a boring life.

I did take my dog out for a walk when we got the mail, but I wish it had been twice as long. I'm to bed again early tonight, and had a fruit smoothie, felt that would be healthy for me.

Eve, I am sorry to hear you are not feeling wonderful and didn't get out to enjoy the nice weather. I completely agree about dogs. They are so wonderful. Joey is such a part of our lives, it would feel so strange if he were not here sharing everything with us. It is cold but sunny. I did get Joey out for a 15 minute walk and then we spent some time at 4pm at the dog park. Dog Park = Heaven to Joey.

My day started really well. When I was laying in bed last night I came up with a solution to a logistic problem in my home. So when I got up--bright and early at 7am--I started moving furniture from room to room and within rooms. I even dusted the baseboards and vacuumed as I moved stuff. I ended up very happy with my changes and instead of spending money and taking on a lot of labor, I got what I wanted for free and about an hour's worth of reasonably easy work.

I also finished shredding all the documents from purging my files. emoticon

Today life is extremely good.

Ann, it is wonderful news that things are going along in such a good manner for you. Makes a person feel motivated and wonderful! I think some of the very best motivation we can receive is when some of our "little" clothes start to fit us again, and when we see the numbers on the scale going down. And when all that is happening we know that our good intentions are actually becoming habits. Habits are much easier to live with because they just come naturally.

It is quite nice out today, I think 76, but because I haven't been feeling good I've been in bed most of the day, so my dog won't go out either. I finally opened the patio door, so now she can go out and still feel like she's "with me." Dogs are so sweet.

I am feeling really good. My food and exercise plans are going well, the scale is slowing moving down, and the skills and tools I am learning are helping me in other areas of my life. I am making important goals and turning them into good habits.

For no obvious reason, yesterday was busy but I didn't actually get much done. Missed church in the AM because DH is fighting a cold and we didn't want him spreading germs. My sister and I went to church in the PM as we had a dedication for our new sanctuary. Oh, yes, now I remember why the day was unproductive. I could not get to sleep Saturday night and ended up on the computer until 2AM. Then I was up at 7AM -- our usual time for going to church and although we didn't go, I couldn't go back to sleep. I was very tired all day. I did not get any exercise done. Today is sunny and I plan to go to the gym for a work out. If it is nice I will bike or walk, if it is too cold, I will do cardio at the gym.

Have a great week everyone.

Thanks SCOTMAMA....during my last appointment I told the doctor that I have been drinking a lot of water and he said that didn't help a dehydration problem....I was partially dehydrated about 10 days ago, and that is why he stopped the Lasix...I see him again Thursday and hopefully he will take a different direction in trying to stop the AFIB......He told me that there is no danger of the AFIB causing a stroke because of a trial study I am in...It is kind of amazing and I can't remember the name of the drug off hand, but it replaces Coumadin in your system with the new medicine.....The miracle of the new medicine is that it should stop strokes.....It finds and dissolves any clots that may cause strokes......The study has been ongoing for 4 years, and has had only 1 or two strokes during that time....And it is a world wide study.....my doctor tells me that it could be in commercial use within 12-15 months.....Interesting huh? emoticon

Bill -- so sorry to hear about the medical problems involving prescriptions (or lack of) -- does it help any to drink even more water? I suppose not.

TX Eve -- I buy my zero-calorie dressings at Sprouts. I do not know if they have them in Texas or not. But it is basically a health food store for fruit and veggies (but they also have a lot of fresh meat and wine too) -- so who knows!

I was doing great with my weight loss for the first month or so, but then I started having AFIB, and to try to stop it my doctor took me off of Lasix, which I have been on for years.....Obvious problem, in the last 8 or 9 days I have gained 2 pounds or more of water weight......hopefuly he will start the water pill again when I see him on Thursday......

HI Guys,

Sorry I have been "missing in action" so much...been having computer problems, it keeps crashing & I have lost everything & have to get it all restored...bummer!
I have been having an unusual problem of late. I am not hungry at night...very strange for me, so I have been skipping that meal, sometimes just fruit..you would think that I would lose weight with that...WRONG, I gained two pounds! Go figure. Anyway, I am going to start forcing myself to eat even if I am not hungry.
BTW, fellow Eve, where do you find 0 calorie dressing for your salad?

I had a lovely walk today. The weather was perfect. Sun was shining and really hot when the breeze died down. The breeze was cool and refreshing. Wonderful.

I am finally feeling somewhat back to normal after my computer problems last week. Now that my taxes are nearly done, I am going to start on some of the other projects I have waiting. Since I am feeling good about my food plan and exercise, I will use it to motivate me to finish up some projects. None are really important, just things I would like to have done.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Today I was to meet a friend for a late breakfast (10:30) so I didn't want to go without eating at all before going, but didn't want much. I finally made myself a small smoothie with coffee/banana/milk and a tiny bit of cappachio latte -- it was good but not too filling. For breakfast I had coffee and a one egg breakfast sandwich (whole wheat toast) with ham and a slice of American cheese. As we ate so late, I skipped lunch and for dinner made myself a big green salad with zero-calorie dressing (I added a few sunflower seeds and a sprinkle of feta and dried cranberries) as I usually do.

Of course tonight I could not resist a small amount of chocolate covered raisins. I seem to need that little bit of sweetness each evening -- which is most likely why I lose s-l-o-w-l-y! lol

My biggest victory of the day was wearing a pair of white jeans that shrunk -- I'm finally small enough to get into them. I have no idea what size they would be equivalent to, they started out as a size 12 but now feel smaller than my size 10's.

Today was a very nice day. The weather was lovely and warm until 3:30 when we got hard rain. Tomorrow will be cooler--typical winter for Florida. We rode our bikes to the gym and I worked out for 20 minutes.

In the early afternoon I had a meeting. I volunteered to review some financial statements and tax returns and the meeting was to discuss this. I found some interesting things--some hidden in the footnotes to the financial statements. I also reviewed the by-laws and declarations of the organization and again found some interesting stuff. I didn't answer any questions but I did find some things that need to be researched and may potentially be very useful. I received nice compliments on my work and it felt very good. I haven't worked for 15 years and it was nice to know that I haven't lost my skills.

Dinner was ham loaf, baked potatoes, and glazed carrots and it was very nice. I know I ate healthy and well-balanced with no butter and it was good.

Hope you are all having a great Friday and will have a wonderful weekend.

I didn't sleep well night before last and got up at 5:30 but felt it last night; went to sleep around 9:00/9:30 and slept like the proverbial log until 8:00 this morning. I feel much better today.

We're getting a couple feet of snow starting this evening and through tomorrow, ugh. I keep looking at the birds out front chowing down on my suet cakes/cages in my pyracantha; they look almost frantic like they know there won't be food for a day or two.

I am tired too! And all the muscles that aren't used to be used are complaining. It was most likely a big mistake to move all that furniture by myself, but when an idea strikes me, I like to act on it. Right then! So now I'm paying for it.
I got up earlier than usual for me 7:00 a.m. so I would have a few minutes to start earning my minimum of 50 Spark Points for the day, plus showering and getting ready to go volunteer at 8:30. I didn't make the feta and spinach scramble I promised myself, but I did have a banana sandwich on whole wheat, and at lunch (ate out) I had a healthy salad with the balsamic vinegarette on the side. Delicious. We'll see how it fares with the scale in the morning. I will have finished my first week on the 28-day challenge. Doubt if I lost any, but I did do well on meeting my goals. So tonight I will think of 3 new ones. I no longer believe in beating myself up if I don't lose because if I'm not gaining, that is a plus!
Hugs and a good-night to all.

I am tired. I was up really early (for me) at 6am as I had my mammogram appointment at 8am. Then we stopped at the drug store, the grocery, got gas, and headed home. I made brunch and then we did our weekly Citizen's Patrol for 2 hours. I rode my bike for an hour and walked the dog for 15 minutes. I did a bit of work in my journal and then took the dog to the dog park for an hour. Then home to fix dinner. I had a healthy salad and enjoyed it. I have been disinterested in salad for quite some time. Instead of waiting until they sound more appealing, I am just going to eat them regularly.

I'm just trying to get out of this chair 10 times a day for at least 5 minutes; I figure that will add up to "exercise". I envy you all in warmer climes, Ann, who can bike ride and stuff (not that I would if I could, LOL).

We're getting ready to be snowed in starting about midday tomorrow; my husband and I went to the grocery store last night to make sure we're good until at least Sunday or Monday.

I did a lot of exercise today.

I walked the dog
I rode my bike to one of our fitness centers where I
did weight work for 25 minutes
got my N1H1 flu shot
I rode my bike home then
I rode my bike to the bank in our village
I rode home and did a few more minutes to check out the mileage for various walks that I do.

I had 65 minutes on my bike, 15 minutes walking, and 25 minutes at the gym.

I am pleased. Yesterday it rained all day and I never got around to doing any exercise. I did not plan on doing as much as I did today, but it was easy and fun.

Margo is right, anger and taxes kind of go together! I thought I was OK with what I was eating yesterday, and God knows I had enough exercise with moving stuff around in my hobby room all afternoon! But .... one of life's little surprises, this morning the scale was up 0.4, so that's how it goes. Up and down, up and down, and..... know what I mean?

LOL, Annie, from angry at the computer to doing taxes, I think I see a theme?

We had more snow last night. I did pretty well with my new eating plan yesterday I think.

I don't know why, but my fiasco with the computer led me to start on the taxes. I had done most of the prep work so I put things into the tax computer program last night. Today, I completed everything I can do. I still have a few tax documents that have not arrived.

I will relax until the stuff come in the mail, then I will finish, proof read and get it ready to send off. This is one job I always feel good about finishing.

Thanks Team for so many of you posting your weight. I love to see participation!

Did you know that it's a proven fact that the more active you are on a team the more likely you are to lose weight? I have no idea why, but it must be true or they wouldn't have written it -- they most likely tracked it some way.

Anyway, I'm not taking any chances, cause I want my extra weight gone ASAP!

February 1 -- did exercise video (bootcamp) and plan to walk later with a friend. It's been cold and snowy here, but I bought some snow pants so I hope I'm ready for anything. I also bought some "non-slip" covers for my boots so I don't slip on the ice.

I'm all ready to start February. Not going out today though; too much snow and too cold still. I'm glad the snow was during the weekend but, since we weren't supposed to get any, 6 inches is still not great. I did get out and shovel when I thought it was mostly over (it wasn't :-) and put down a little salt and yesterday, which was clear and sunny, saw a good melt so at least I have a sidewalk for the mailman to walk up.

Here it is all set up for you eager-beavers! Depends on the time zone for who gets here first I suppose. Anyway, wanted to have it ready for you.

Now don't forget to sign into the "Monthly Weigh In" and record your new weight for February 1st.
