You know -- it's nice to be at someone else's home for the Thanksgiving holiday! I can sit back, maybe help a little -- and they do all the work. So for now, I have caught up on all my email and am thinking about helping my daughter a little by helping out with her ironing. As I watch TV!

She keeps it much colder in her home than I am used to so I am all bundled up -- think my blood has thinned out from living in Arizona too long!

Happy Thanksgiving to all..... emoticon

I recently read a hint about not overeating at a particular meal was to eat an apple beforehand. You could try that for the Thanksgiving feast. I have also heard that if you eat a small bowl of tomato soup before a meal you are more likely to eat a smaller portion of food. I love to buy the Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato soup from Sprouts (it's organic and really delicious). It could be worth a try! After all, we don't want to look like the turkey do we? (No, that doesn't mean crisp and brown it means STUFFED!)

My Christmas tree is up and decorated. Other than making a homemade apple pie to take with me to Las Vegas, I'm all set to go. Tomorrow I am a Caregiver in the afternoon, then to Costco for some gift purchases, then back home to bake that pie! I feel I'm all set for the company that will arrive the day after I get back home!

I can tell it's getting to be the busy time of year, and unfortunately it's also that time of year when we encounter temptations everywhere we turn! I am going to try to hold my holiday eating to a minimum as I don't want to "undo" all the hard work that I have put into losing my pounds over the past year.

Any good hints on how to achieve this?
Hugs to all, and Happy Thanksgiving! Scotty Eve

Yes, the upcoming holidays are rather intimidating! I will be at my daughter's for Thanksgiving and her boyfriend is a gourmet cook -- I don't know what kind of temptations will be placed before me! I do think I will chose to drink red wine rather than white because I much prefer the white, that way I will not be tempted to have more than one glass!
There will be pumpkin and apple pie but I will try to settle for one bite of each.

On the bright side I have lost about 10 pounds since the last time my daughter saw me, so hopefully it shows! She has lost even more than that, so it will a mutual admiration day!

LOL, not as "petite" as I'd like to be....ahh yes, back in school, I had a 19 in. waist. I "know" I will never get close to that again, but 24 would be nice!
I am quaking in fear just thinking about the approaching holidays...I pray I don't gain too much back!

Texas Eve -- I kind of figured you were the "China doll" type -- even though the profile photo is just upper body, you look petite.

I'm 5'2 also, but look taller, and I have a wide back. If I can get down to 135 I will be within the healthy BMI range; but secretly I'd look terrific if I could make it down to 125. Back then I wore a size 6 dress and had to have the waist taken in. To be realistic I realize we kind of shift our weight around as we get older, and I figure I'll be lucky to ever even dream about a 24 inch waist, much less a 21 inch waist.

I'm 5'6" and weighed 127 my teen and young adult years; could eat or do anything and it wouldn't budge up or down more than a pound. Now though I have upped my end weight to the top number the BMI scale says is "normal" for my height, 149.

I don't worry about fat too much (though I track saturated fatty acids in my food tracker) but I'm trying to work more on diversity. I've read that it's the French people's more diverse diet (which is higher in fat than American) which helps them better avoid the chronic diseases we get.

I am 5'2" tall & small bone structure..I did have a gyn tell me that I should never weigh over 110 pounds...I will not go lower than 115 now though as I think that will be perfect. I still have a lot of "fat" on me at 124...

Part of the question of 115 being too low is your height and bone structure. If you were 4'10" 110-115 would be right for you.

Hey Scottie Eve, you sound like my endo Doc! She says she thinks that is too low...however, I have weighed 110 pounds or less until middle age took over & it has been a battle to get back anywhere near that all these years... That was my original goal & I have reivsed it to 115. I just feel better at that weight...

Howdy y'all -- Well, Texas Eve you are still doing darn good even if you are hovering between 126-127 but looking at your goal I see you have down 115. Are you sure you want to get that low? Most of us older folks need a tad more padding so we don't look like those skinny little old women that you've all seen. Besides, if you get sick, and you're already skinny, you've nothing to fall back on.

You can always think of that as you are gobbling down all those holiday treats that seem to be all over the place.

Happy Sunday Everyone! Scotty Eve

Hi All,

Happy Sunday! I am still "treading water" can't seem to break out of this plateau..keep hopping back & forth between 126 & 127. If I could just learn to be good on weekends, it would be so much better & I don't even want to think about the holiday eating...I have to be strong & keep to all things in moderation...I am closer to goal than I've ever been, just have to make it that last 10 miles...LOL.

I've noticed over the past month or two that my weight was creeping up again. Some of my girlfriends just laughed and said "that's how it goes when you get old." But laugh or not, I was not satisfied to see my weight going in that direction. I most likely made some bad choices in my food, and travel causes less exercise (driving all day, and although it does burn calories, it's not like walking or doing something where you are moving!)
So -- on Sunday I had amasssed the ingredients to make myself that famous Cabbage Soup and go on their diet. Today is the end of Day Two! Read about it in my blogs. I figure if I can lose 5 pounds I'll be back where I need to be for this timeframe, and if I lose more, that's just a bonus!

The story about the little boy is NOT a hoax! I checked it out on www.snopes.com where you can check ANY "urban legend".

I WILL be sending him a card! He lives in my state. So sad that this 5 year old is in such a position. I feel so bad for him and his family...

I was informed by a member that this plea is a hoax. I don't think we want that to spread through SparkPeople. Just a warning to be particularly watchful during the holiday season. emoticon

I don't know where my brain is anymore -- I just now discovered we didn't have a thread for our Nov. Chat!

and also.....I received the following message from another SP friend, and I felt compelled to pass it on. May many of us respond to this little boy!

...I received this info from another SP friend and was asked to pass it on!

Hello this is a VERY special request...

This week Christmas is being celebrated by a very young boy and his family, this young boy (ONLY 5 yrs old) is loosing a battle to cancer. His last request is to get Christmas cards. Lets all keep him and his loved ones in our prayers and spend the small amount to buy him a Christmas card, or make one as a personal touch, so he can see that the world is praying for him and his family and we hope these cards will make him smile!!
