Well, HOPEFUL, I'm not sure how they do 10,000 steps a day. I can't. I'm 70 - how old are you? My goal is to do 7500 steps per day, but my usual is 5500 to 6500. If you are doing only 2500 you need to take a serious look at your exercise format and see if you can't get it up to around 5000 steps a day. I know it is hard, but try to increase by just 100 steps each day until you are doing better. You know 2500 one day -- do that for 3 or 4 days, then up it to 2600 for a few days. Keep it up, and let me know how you are doing! Good Luck!

Hi Sorry I haven't been posting, but beginning tomorrow, I plan to be more active. I'm going to try the boot camp challenges and walk.
I do have a question - how on earth do these people want over 10,000 steps a day!!!! If I even get to 2500, I'm beat for the day. Could it be cause I am older and don't have the energy all these younger ones have.
Anyway,I'm going to give it my best shot in May.

Today is the last day of our "April Chat" and of course that means tomorrow it will become "May Chat" and also as it will be May 1st -- PLEASE don't forget to go to our Monthly Weigh In and record your weight. I wish all the members did that -- makes me wonder where some of you are????

Anyway, it's been a great month even if I was sick for an entire week. Didn't lose much weight, but the important thing to me is that I DID LOSE, I did not gain or even stay even, so I'm making progress!

See you in May! Hugs to all -- Eve

I don't like to think my age affects my weight loss but sadly you are right. I can't eat as much as they say I ought to. I don't think they take into account the age.

You have to figure in the age factor for us seniors too, because I can remember in my younger years being able to eat anything and everything and never had to worry about a weight gain. (sigh) I know those years are gone forever, and it confuses me to see so many overweight "young" people in the stores and on the streets. Why are they like that? How did they get like that? Was I unique when I was young? I don't think I could have eaten enough to actually GAIN weight -- I ate like a lumberjack as it was.

OK, now I'm a senior and I have to live a healthier lifestyle, drink the water, eat the fruits, eat the veggies, don't eat too much red meat, watch the salt, get the exercise -- Man! the list just goes on and on. Of course even good habits become a natural thing if done long enough. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Sometimes eating is unexplainable. They say it takes 3500 calories to put on a pound and that's above the normal calories your body needs to live. And in a meal or two the pounds can jump up 5 or 6. It isn't fat but it can be discouraging nevertheless. Sometimes it takes a week to get back down and back to where you were thus losing a week. We just can't think about where we could have been. Let's just move on from here.

PS - Eve I liked you last Blog. That's how my weight loss works. It's a yo-yo slowly moving in a downward direction. Keep up the good work...

Blessings from Georgia,
Jack

Hi There.

Boy do I understand! About the Mexican Food. My sin wasn't Mexican Food, but on my B-Day 2 weeks ago, my daughter cooked me this fabulous seafood meal. Steamed clams dipped in lemon butter ooooh so good and ooooh so bad. We also had lobster. The next day my other daughter's husband, who is a fabulous cook, made steak gargozola. Needless to say I was down to 158, it zoomed up to l64 but I am now on my way down again. I have been exercising more and I'm down to 160 today. NO MORE GOURMET FOR ME!

By the way Jack, I like your motto....Remember Lot's Wife. Your so right. Lets go forward. emoticon

I suppose the thing about Mexican food is that they tend to use grease, salt, and lots of cheese -- sauce this and that and the sweetness of my drink tells me that was a big no-no too. Back down to 145.2 this morning, so I've lost most of it. Still disgusted though -- without that Mexican weight gain I might have been at 143 today, which is my goal for the month of April. I'm always a month behind!

It's Mexican food. I did the same thing on Sunday at church. They had Mexican food in celebration of 29 years. I was up 2.5 pounds and I didn't overeat. I'm back down today. Water weight fluctuations.

You know it's amazing how you can eat one meal and not gain an ounce -- although I didn't weigh in the next morning and I did have a lot of exercise on that day. Then Sunday, still weighing in at 144.8 I go out with a friend for Mexican food - refried beans, sauce on the enchilada's, chips & salsa, and of course a fresh fruit frozen marguerita (hey! it SAID fruit) and I get on the scale this morning and it tells me 146.0 -- just doesn't seem right does it?
That means I need to be good today and exercise like crazy.

OK Gang, here are the details on Friday night. I get there close to 5:00, they pour me a glass of wine (1) then in a few minutes we walk 2 houses away and the party begins. Everyone is very friendly, most are snowbirds -- some from Minnesota, so I fit right in (my original state). Conversation was fun, they all liked me - food was remarkable, fresh trop. fruit salad, really yummy potatoes, BBQ NY strip steak and broiled asparagus. Desert to die for, some kind of apple cake, moist & chewy with cool whip, or who knows (real whipped cream) I just ate and savored the taste of it all. Spent the night, so didn't weight in, came back home Saturday and was a good girl. Weighed in this morning and still 144.8 so I'd say - WOW! I'm so happy!!!

I have found that time flies by and it would be easy for the days to escape and I get nothing done. So I have to-do goals and I'm trying to get as many done as possible. Course Money is a major factor. SS isn't a lot to live on and we have a son living with us while he tries to find a job. We are having to pay his car expenses etc. But he does watch our dog when we are gone. So that helps.

You know, Jack, I always smile when I read your little notes. YOU exemplify "retired living" and I think that is fantastic.

Life sounds like sooooo much fun. I mean -- there is nothing wrong with the way I'm living too, but I love hearing about all these different places you are always heading out to.

I'm so glad I got over my little plateau where I couldn't stay under 230. It was almost worth being a bit unwell to begin with (an odd cold that started with sinus pain, I have never had sinus trouble before, hope I never have it again :-)

But I wander to the doctor's next Monday and hope I've had an appreciable loss for the three months since I saw him last. Hard to tell with their scale/clothes on versus my own. Mostly though I want my blood pressure to be not quite so alarming to them, lull them for another 3 months, LOL. It wanders around a lot and I've come to learn my meds he's got me on for other stuff aren't helping and that makes me a little mad as I hate the let's-take-this-for-the-symptoms-of-that game.

Thanks Jack. The bad thing about having the appetite back and enjoying my food is that the weight came right back with it. Well, almost all the weight, I'm still down a tiny bit. One of my goals was to reach 145 by the end of March; so while I'm two weeks behind on my goal, I did make it, and it seems to be hanging in there. My April goal is to be down to 143, so I've still got a couple more weeks to work at losing that extra weight -- we'll see how it goes. My main goal in life is that my weight at the end of the month is a little less than it was at the beginning of the month. Progress is OK by me, goals are nice to meet, but no one is perfect.

Have a good day everyone! Eve

Easter was the first day since Tuesday that I felt like eating normal food. And knowing how the scale could shoot up after not eating for so long I was very careful. One slice of ham, a normal helping of scalloped potatoes, a normal helping of candied carrots. Ran out of eggs and didn't make the delicious fresh lemon thing, so we had orange sherbet mixed with vanilla icecream. Remember dreamsickles from your childhood days? Oh and a sparkling wine completed the meal. It was very good, and this morning I weigh 145.2 - not bad!

After a very long time, I thought I would check in and update my status, and say Hi to anyone still there who remember's me. I am doing well, have had some setbacks, but not in the weight loss department. My goal has always been my Sparkpeople name, Iwillbe145. I am able to see the goal line now, I weighed in this morning at 152. I still have nearly 10 lbs to go, and I can see by my belly that I will want to continue loosing until I have a waistline again, but I am so happy to have come so far.

Thanks, Charlotte -- I'm on the mend. Still no appetite and nothing much appeals to me. Hope the Easter dinner I have planned will taste good to me. I'm making ham, a apple/yam casserole, a Caesar salad and for dessert: fresh lemon pudding with swirls of whipped cream.

Been there, done that! Not fun! Now I try and keep some Immodium in the medicine cabinet, and even in my purse "just in case". It isn't something you want to be without. I hope you are doing better now. emoticon

I would say basically you don't like fish because you were not used to eating it as a child. People tend to eat what they are used to. I eat everything (well, there are a FEW exceptions) and therefore my kids seem to also.

I know fish is a healthy thing when you are trying to get your weight down, but I'm not an expert at cooking them. So I order them lots of times when I am eating out.

With my "bathroom trots" continuing on for 2 full days I finally had a friend go to the drugstore and get me some medicine. I would never have dared leave the house for that long - 15 minutes limit, the last day I didn't even go after the mail! I'm slowly coming around, not too interested in food just yet but force myself to eat. The scales hit 143 this morning! That's the good part.

I don't like fish. Though when I was young I caught trout and ate them. My Mother doesn't like fish nor did my Grandmother. My daughter can't stand it either. So the conclusion is that it is a gentic thing. I did find out that I do like Talapia. It's plenty mild. I used to go to Long John Silvers when the kids were young and ate their breaded chicken and it was good. So I'm slowly getting into a little fish. I have a hard time with the smell.

I know it's much easier to see the scale heading up when you've eaten restaurant food versus homemade. I think more and more restaurants will cater to your wishes though, such as with an omelet and hashbrowns, specify "no salt" and they will do that. Tastes blah! (to me) but perhaps you can top it with a little salsa (healthy) to help out.

My scales are hanging in the 146.something group for a few days now. I know the reason the scale isn't being nugged downward is because I've been bad about the exercise. Today I will try to do better and we will see what happens. Last night I ate at Red Lobster and my meal was a healthy one. Caesar Salad, broccoli, wood-fire grill Rainbow Trout, baked potato so it was only the sour cream on the potato that was a bad thing. And the meal was delicious!

Actually this last trip, I watched it closely. Split meals, ate mostly salads and had our own dressing. Ate no sandwiches or desserts. Walked a lot. Was only up 3.5 pounds. I keep looking for ways to watch the diet and still enjoy my life.

We have a joke about if it tastes good spit it out, but why only eat food that doesn't taste good. Too many things I have no control over when eating out. We don't know how much salt the put on things or other sodium filled spices. I go again in a couple weeks so I get to try it again.

Jack - there is no such thing as failure unless you give up; and you have not given up. Perhaps you did not reach your goal in the timeframe you allotted, and perhaps it would be better to set yourself very short timeframe goals, they are easier and you can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

As far as vacation and travel go, I'll bet if I could look over your lifestyle while on either (and vacation usually involves travel) there would be places where you could make small changes that would make a big difference. Sometimes people say to themselves, when on vacation, "Oh what the heck, I'm on vacation." If you find yourself saying things like that too often -- then, ya, you're going to come back from that vacation a lot heavier. How about changing some of those phrases for: "Well, it's a long walk, but heck, I'm on vacation, so I'll do it."

Good luck!

I have trouble with goals. I set a weight goal which I think is reasonable and something deters me, like vacation or travel. So I fail to reach my goal. However, I'm closer to my goal than I was. That is the real goal - getting closer to a goal than you were. Maybe if I try harder or plan better I will get closer to the goal. It is failure unless you are farther from your goal than when we started. SO let's work for our goal. Go through the view points and see if there is any you can do. Read the articles, track you food and do as much cardio as you can. Remember housework, gardening, work on the house are all cardio minutes.

As most of you know, our TEAM GOAL is to get 750 Spark Points each day. Not for each of us, but as a Team -- and right now we have averaged 603 Spark Points per day so far this month. Thatis much better than we have been doing -- I'm proud of all of you who are working hard to build up the amount of Spark Points we earn each day.

It's not like you can DO all that much with them, but the more involved you are, the quicker they seem to build up. My personal goal is 1500 per month, but last month I had 1900+ so I was pretty pleased.

For all of you who are helping -- THANK YOU! You are a great Team!

Hugs to all -- Eve emoticon

Gee! We're not only IN April, but in one more week after today it will be EASTER. I've got a ham in the freezer just for that day -- with company I hope.

It was sooooo windy here last night - I could hear things being blown all over the place on my patio. The way I figure it is that it was either blowing a lot of leaves and such into my yard - or OUT of my yard, will find out more later.

Either way, my weight has been going down and that makes me a happy camper (not that I've been camping lately).

Hugs to all, Eve

Wow into April Chat already. I'm back from the Smokies and had a good time. Got in some hiking so helped keep my weight from going up too much. Will get back on track. Hope everyone is doing good.

Blessings from Georgia,
Jack

Hi Charlotte,

Bless You! For even wondering about it. You are automatically contributing to our goal, each time you get a Spark Point, it is automaticaly added to our overall spark points. Right now you are #9 among our Team. If you click on our main page, the one that lists the number of members, etc. scroll all the way to the part where it talks about goals, and click on something there about Spark Points, I can't remember exactly what it's called, and when it goes to that page it lists us all in order. I'm not number one -- I remember Papa something or other is ahead of me and maybe 2 or 3 others.

Yes, I see you are almost to receive your newest status symbol for achieving 5,000. I've probably been on here a lot longer than you, or for whatever reason, I just received my 'gold' trophy for reaching 25,000. My personal goal is to have 50 SP every day, or 1500 per month. In March I had over 1900 so I did really well. It's just something that I like to do -- maybe because I'm a numbers person.

Hey, Eve,
How do I add my sparkpoints to the Sparkpoint goal? I saw the topic at the bottom of the page but couldn't see how to add my points to it, or do they go on automatically? I am 8 points away from my next trophy, at 5,000.

charlotte

After a very long time, I thought I would check in and update my status, and say Hi to anyone still there who remember's me. I am doing well, have had some setbacks, but not in the weight loss department. My goal has always been my Sparkpeople name, Iwillbe145. I am able to see the goal line now, I weighed in this morning at 152. I still have nearly 10 lbs to go, and I can see by my belly that I will want to continue loosing until I have a waistline again, but I am so happy to have come so far.

I know -- jumping the gun again, but I know some of you live in areas where you get to the computer while I'm still busy sleeping. And I want this thread to be here and ready for you.

April 1st -- Wow, how the time goes by. Can you believe that those baby back ribs I ate last night caused me to LOSE 5 pounds?

Ya -- APRIL FOOL, that'll be the day, huh?
