Thank You! You are obviously much better informed than me, I didn't even know there was an age requirement to get the vaccination.

Hope you are safe until you become old enough.

I knew that my best girlfriend's husband got shingles, and she is the one that told me to get the shot for it. I asked my doctor, and presto! Of course we are all old-timers!

I'm not old enough yet, have a couple years before it's given, maybe by then they'll have it working better :-) I think I'll ask the doctor when we go in January if my husband should get it. I was asking him if he'd had chickenpox as apparently if you haven't and come in contact with shingles, it will give you chickenpox. I didn't want him to ever have to nurse me through shingles/sleep by my side, etc. if he'd not had chickenpox.

From the Mayo info (too many "will likely" comments; I like stuff that just works and there's all kinds of hazards to getting the shot listed too, contraindications):

"The varicella-zoster vaccine (Zostavax) can help prevent shingles in adults age 60 and older who've had chickenpox. Like the chickenpox vaccine, the shingles vaccine doesn't guarantee you won't get shingles. But this live vaccine will likely reduce the course and severity of the disease and reduce your risk of postherpetic neuralgia."

Margo - GET THE SHOT FOR SHINGLES! Yes, you are right it is from chicken pox not measles. I knew it was one of those childhood diseases that nearly every one gets. I've had the vaccination and so have most of my friends. If you get shingles it's too late, no cure. They will go into remission, but they are likely to come back, and I understand they are quite painful.

Again, don't wait -- get the vaccination!
PS -- I'm back home!

I think it's chickenpox, Eve, not measles; that's one reason they have shots for the kids now instead of just thinking they're "harmless" like when we were kids. They're both the herpes zoster virus and it "comes back" as shingles (like they're finding Polio symptoms can come back later in life if you've had it, one of my girlfriends had that problem).

My father developed shingles in his 70's and it's extremely painful. I expect I'll get them as I had chickenpox when I was 3, still remember them :-)

Here's the Mayo clinic page on them:

If you have ever had measles as a kid, yes, you are a candidate to developing shingles. To prevent this from happening there is a vacination you can get. I understand the serum is limited and so the earlier you check with your doctor the better your chances of receiving the shot. I had it myself over 6 months ago.

If you do get shingles I understand it is painful, and that even when they (the medical people) are successful in causing a recession, it can come back at any time. There really is no cure.

So if you don't already have it, by all means get that vacination pronto!
