I went with a model by Hamilton Beach from Amazon (it isn't here yet). It has decent reviews and I have another non-programmable boiler model from Hamilton Beach that never leaked, so I am going to try it. I'll let you know if it is junky or not.

One of the major annoyances with the B&D model I had was this really loud beeping when you pressed a button and when the water was finished. I will throw that one out now, it had a clear window to show the water level and that is where the weak spot in the design was, where it began to leak.

I can't help you I have an old one that don't have temperature settings and I don't plan to replace it until it stops working.

I've been in the market for an electric kettle, too, but I haven't bought one yet. Let us know whether you find one you like better than your B&D, because that's on my short list.

I primarily drink bagged teas, so I started off with a tea pot on the stove. That isn't very convenient, so I went with a cheap water boiler. I upgraded to a Black and Decker model with variable temperature settings, as I read that green teas should be steeped at 175 degrees instead of boiling to release less bitter tannins, and found that the tea was indeed smoother. Most of the time I drink black teas and boiling water is fine for that, but I've been using my variable temp boiler for everything from 200 degree French Press coffee, 185 degree water for instant oatmeal, and I use the thing several times every day.

It sprung a leak today and needs to be replaced. For the time being I have my old "dumb" boiler, but I wondered if anyone has a recommendation for a good model that does variable temperatures? What do you all use? I use only purchased filtered water to avoid the nasty sediment that forms in the pot from our gross tap water.

Thanks.
