As if we need another website to join, but www.meetup.com has various interest groups that get together and I joined the triathlon one to make friends and meet new people.

My next goals is to finish the biking leg of my triathlon relay Sunday May 17th....who knows where i will go after that.

I just finished meeting my 5K goal on 4/25...so I am checking them off the list. YIPPIE!!! :)

Here's another great source for athletic events and competition, especially multi-sport -- it's the Austin Triathletes' website, newly up and running (no pun intended! =)

Two great sources for races in the Austin area are the Run Tex event calendar: www.runtex.com/web/4-2.asp

and the Jack and Adam's event calendar: www.jackandadams.com/ASP/Calendar.as

Hope those are helpful!

What races are going to be happening this May/June/July/August? I am going to be in Austin this summer and would like to train for some of them. Is it usually to hot to finish some of these?
Thanks in advance!

I just registered for the Tour de Cure that is coming up in May. It takes place over a 2 day period and you can choose from one or two days of riding as well as 25, 55, and 80 mile courses. I'll be doing the 25 mile ride from San Marcos to Austin.

My next goal is to complete a half-marathon inline skate race called the Texas Road Rash Marathon. It's in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park April 18/19th 2009.

Thanks, Rebecca. Yeah, Rogue was what I had signed up for and was going to make payments but the timing was bad and I needed the $$ back.

Well, turns out that I got an unexpected bonus at work which will at least pay for some training, Yay!!!! I want to find one closer to home (Round Rock) than the Rogue training programs were. Looks like Tri Zones may fit the bill. Still got to find a bike though. I am going to get my son's mountain bike off of the garage wall to see if it fits at all first. If not, I will begin my search for a viable (and cheap) bike...

I don't know which program you signed up through, but some of them will let you pay in installments. Rogue Running (Ironchicks) actually has that option on their online registration. And that was a huge motivating factor for me -- knowing that it was a huge financial sacrifice for me made me more accountable for going to every session.

I hope it works out for you.

I fully intended to join a training group but last minute financial issues are getting in the way! I had even registered for a couple programs and then had to withdraw. I may still join some structured training, just depends on how things go the nex 2-3 weeks. I am really nervous about getting ready on my own but I decided that I was not going to wait another year just because of finances. So for me it is literally sink or swim!

I would never have done the Danskin without a training group that helped me with the swimming. And when I started, I thought I was a strong swimmer. I had to re-learn how to swim, but with a solid 12 weeks' preparation, it was such a sense of accomplishment.

But the best thing that happened was one day when I went to Stacey Pool to swim, and it was closed. A lady in the parking lot asked me if I was training for Danskin and said that she had done it for five years -- and that she swam sidestroke the whole time, every time. It changed my whole perspective.

Just finishing that race changed my life (which is what the back of the medal says: "The woman who starts the race is not the same woman who finishes the race").

KEYWEST3 - I am totally NOT a swimmer. I can swim breaststroke and have an awesome backstroke but never really got the freestyle form down. But that is what training is for, right? If need be I will get a little coaching. Then again, I never thought I could run 3 blocks none the less 3 miles - and I am almost there.

you know, so many ladies talk about the tri and I really never considered one. mostly because i am no good at swimming. but since starting SP and doing strength training 3 times/week, i've developed a lot of muscular strength in my shoulders, arms, and back. I wonder if this development will change my swimming ability....hmmm.

Since a lot of my weekends are booked with stuff, I am doing races on the virtual team. Their next one is a 1 mile race on 3/15 and a 5K, 10K, and 16K on 3/21.

Good luck to both of you!

Rebecca - have a great ride!

One of these days, I'll get a new bike, then, maybe my daughter will get off her duff and ride the gorgeous road bike she has sitting in storage [grrr!].

My next big run goal is a 3-day 60-miler in Dallas with my running buddie. Any races we do in between we'll consider training, hahaha!

So, for those of you motivated by the organized race, the run, the ride ... what's on the horizon for you?

I am doing the Spokes'n'Spurs Ride on March 8, riding 62.5 miles (a metric century).

And you?
