Hey, AJ, I never said I'd prefer a nice, greasy burger. I said it's hard to replace one with tofu.

You say this forum is for people who are interested in eating a plant-based, and that is exactly what I am. So I'm really sorry that you feel the way you do.

I never intended to upset, sicken, or sadden anyone, but if that's how you feel about me mentioning a burger, you must really walk around upset, sickened and sadden all day long, every day of your life, and I feel sorry for you.

Relax, and try not to take over anymore threads.

My question was, if you eat low carb and vegan, how many carbohydrates do you take in, on average? Can we get back to that now?

I think it's kind of revolting that you would come into a vegetarian and vegan forum and talk about how much you would prefer "a nice, greasy burger with bacon and mayo" to products not made out of animal parts. Not to mention that those items are unhealthy, and this website is all about sparking healthy lifestyles, even if you are a person who doesn't think it's cruel to torture and kill cows, pigs and chickens (how?).

Next time you come into a space meant to be a forum for people who are interested in eating plant-based for ethical and/or health reasons, I would seriously consider thinking twice before posting something glorifying unhealthy and cruel items. It's your prerogative but I'm not sure why you'd want to upset, sicken, or sadden people who are just trying to help you with your question.

Nice?? Maybe some sort of spiritual practice or even a stronger workout routine will help you to not want to put such toxic and cruelty based things into your body. Spring is here in the northern hemisphere. So much fresh produce! The more you eat good food the less your body will desire the toxic stuff. No need to look for substitutes or replacements. It's a whole new adventure. I hope you might have some fun with it.

I know I'll eat more than 20 carbs on a vegetarian or vegan diet. I was just wondering how many carbs in a good average.

I'll check out the Eco-Atkins way of eating, thanks! I had no idea!

I find it very difficult to use tofu or tempeh in place of meat for low carb. A nice, greasy burger with bacon and mayo without a bun is impossible to replace with tofu. emoticon

Thanks for the input everyone! Gonna give this a better try this time around!

My boyfriend is on a low-carb diet and is not a vegetarian, but I am vegetarian (almost entirely vegan) and I cook for him. I recommend using tofu and tempeh as you would meat in a low-carb diet. Soy flour and almond flour are great. Silken tofu can replace bean or chickpea purees. Other great products: avocado, shirataki noodles, nuts/seeds and nut butters.

Don't listen to anyone who thinks a vegan can't get enough calories without relatively high carbs. You can probably use an entire day's worth of calories incorporating half a cup of almond butter, avocado, extra-virgin olive oil, coconut, or other healthy fats into your diet.

I also like sunwarrior raw vegan protein powder, which works well in smoothies.

I'm not even sure it's possible to eat that low a level of carbs on a vegan diet and still get enough calories. I'm actually the opposite, I could probably call myself a starchivore...
Anyhow, I hope you find your own way of healthy and satisfying eating, whatever it is.

Although my aspirations are not at all to eat a 'low-carb vegan' diet, I kinda do I guess. My carbs come primarily from fresh vegetables. I eat some fruit. I eat nuts and seeds. I eat some legumes. I don't eat grains. I simply feel better when I don't. My daily carbs range between 130 and 250. This might be low-carb for a plant eater but not at all of which you speak.

I'm somewhat baffled these days by diet. Some folks go for lots of fruit. Some for lots of starch. Some for high protein. Some for low protein (relative to SP recommendations anyway) Now that I'm not chronically underweight anymore, now that I have fully recovered from a surgery, although I work on power ST type exercise daily, I'm attempting to greatly lower my protein levels. I guess that you, too, will need to try some things out for yourself and see just how you respond. There is no one right way.

P.S. It's really cool that you want to eat just plants!

I liked dropping pounds when I ate low carb and all the meat, eggs, and cheese, but I don't want to eat animal products. When you start, you tried to stay under 20 carbs per day for a couple weeks, then add more and more in with veggies and eventually fruit.

(Let's not argue about if this is a good way of eating, it's just something I did and I'm over it now.)

If you eat "low carb" and vegan, how many carbs do you consume a day?
