It sounds like dehydration to me. You need to hydrate not only while you run/walk, but also BEFORE. I don't belong to a gym, and have recently taken up running, so I do most of my cardio outdoors. I live in VA, and we get some serious heat & humidity here. Here's what I suggest:

Hydrate BEFORE you work out. I drink water all day, but I will drink at least 2-3 glasses before going out.

Be careful of the time of day you are going out. Early morning is best, but if you are like me (NOT a morning person!), evenings might work better.

Be sure you're not out on a completely empty stomach - you need fuel. Sometimes just an apple and some cheese (or peanut butter) is perfect about an hour before you go out.

And finally, I HIGHLY recommend the Couch To 5K program! I was NOT a runner, in fact I HATED running. I started C25K basically on a whim. I wanted to see if it would work, and I wanted to see if I could actually finish it. It is an interval program designed to get you from "couch" (non-running) to able to complete a 5K in 9 weeks without injury. I was HIGHLY skeptical, but here I am, going into week 8 and I'm consistently running 25 minutes at a time!!

If you are interested in C25K, there are several programs out there (SP has one) and there is a Spark Team here, as well. In fact, you can get podcasts on itunes for free that are designed to go with the program. I do the C25K from Coolrunning. You can find it at: www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181

Also, lots of people do the program inside on a treadmill if you decide that outside in the summer is really not for you.

Good luck!

I dont really enjoy running and I do enjoy walking a lot more! I went because my cousin is a runner and I thought I'd try it out again. It use to be hard on my knees, but I think my legs are stronger now..however that doesn't mean I'll be making a regular routine! haha

I don't mind running on the treadmill at the gym...but it IS more boring haha and with that said.. I have to head to the gym for some strength training!

How are you at brisk walking, Syl? You've got to walk before you run. I'm recovering from a stroke I had last summer, so walking is great for me. As I increase my strength training, I expect running and jumping will come back.

But I'd rather walk than run (unless I have to catch a bus or escape a mugger). I know too many people with damaged knees and feet from running.

I wonder how many vehicles were on the road and if you were breathing carbon monoxide. That could cause burning and headaches.

Hi everyone, I have a question... I don't usually run outside and today my cousin convinced me to go with her. I usually work out inside or at the gym and thought that i was in decent shape..turns out that I'M NOT and not only was my lungs burning.... i started getting a headache! that's never happened before while i exercised so I found it super weird...... and it concerned me. I don't know if it was the heat or if i was bit dehydrated? (although i did bring a bottle of water with me and drank most of it) we didn't go very far... 6 blocks there and 6 blocks back I walked at least 1/2 so..... can anyone help me out? thanx!
