I'm not going to quibble about what constitutes exercise. I get a lot of odd minutes in by marching in place at the copier, doing wall pushups while waiting for the microwave, etc. besides other exercise.

I intentionally walk 10,000 steps a day (which means I get more a day since I do a lot of walking in my everyday life too)

I try to remember to set my watch for my intentional walking, strength training, and other exercise but whether I do or not, my intentional exercise is planned movement for the sake of getting in 2 hours of fitness for my body

I hike, lift weights, use a myriad of workout DVDs, and have a treadmill, elliptical, rowing machine, and stationary bike at home, plus all the strength training equipment I need. And my husband is faithful to working out every single day and he's my biggest supporter towards a healthy lifestyle.

Part of my plan is part of my routine. Several days a week (weather permitting), I go out at lunch and walk. If 'outside' walking is not an option, we have a Mall very close to work and many days, I will go and 'walk the mall'. I have a FitBit tracker that keeps track of my steps/distance walked. Granted, for some, walking is not really considered exercise. For me, at my age - and at this stage in my life and from research that I have done, WALKING is one of the BEST exercises you can do. Most weeks, roughly 3-days per week for about 3-4 hours in total, I take classes at my local YMCA. I take these classes with DD and a GF. DD's future mother-in-law is an instructor, so the 4 of us are working on that 'Wedding Day Look' and I think that we all have a 'vision' of what that look can/should be.

I'm working on my plan. I am (impatiently) waiting on the tax return to get a gym membership and then I intend to attend some fitness classes. Right now my house is crowded and I can't always get away from the kids. Though now that the weather is breaking, I can get them outside and to the park, which is another plan I have in place already.

I do intentional exercise but my heart rate doesn't go high for heath reasons. I mainly walk but make a point to do yoga, strength training and balance exercises too.

Now that spring is finally here, and I'm not having 14 degree nights, I promised myself and intentional exercise plan. It includes 30 minutes of spin cycle on my stationary bike. On Alternate days I use 5 lb weights for 15 minutes. I've added working in the yard. That require s some heavy lifting. and I'm going to intentionally get 3000 steps a day. That's a thousand step jump for me. But I can work up to it if I have to.

I'm loving these little challenges. For the past two days I've eaten all my food at the table. I lay it out with a napkin, a fork a glass , and a small plate. And I write in my journal and I eat mindfully. that was number nine I love NUMBER 9.

One big one for me is dog grooming. This time of year, my huskies are shedding and it's not uncommon to spend an hour a day keeping up with the hair. The other two dogs aren't as bad (kelpie and lab mix). And then there's the cats which 7 of 13 are long-haired and it's a workout just trying to catch them.

I also walk to and from our cat shed a minimum of twice a day. That's a workout, too.

I count anything I do intentionally as exercise. Days I spend working or sewing and don't do a lot of simple movement (steps), but still get my intentional walking/hikeing in I have trouble with sometimes because my "distance" or steps are low, but intentionally walking is more beneficial than just moving around.

Yes, I have a routine at the gym and I go at least 4-5 days a week. That routine includes weight training and core training.

I also have the intention of walking in my neighborhood the days I don't get to the gym and I also do yoga regularly.

I have a pool so I do water aerobics on days I don't go to the gym. I have foam weights for the pool that really help with weight training!

I only count intentional exercising. Sometimes I want to count more because it would look good but I need to keep my feet firmly planted in reality. On my Garmin you can start a clock to count not only the time but also the calories that I burn during that time.

Does your exercise plan include 'intentional exercise'?

Yes!

Whether it's walking, chair dancing, Wii Stepping, hula hooping, etc. It's intentional.

Also, my activity tracker only records minutes of activity when the activity has a duration of 10 minutes or longer.

When I swim or walk when holding something (like the rails on a treadmill, shopping cart or a stroller), I set the tracker for laps or time the activity because my tracker doesn't record incidental movement.

ANY time I do something for 10 minutes or longer it's intentional movement.

Yes, I have a set strength plan 3 days per week; My goal is to get in at least 60 minutes of intentional exercise each day, including both strength and aerobic. I usually meet or exceed that goal but don't beat myself up if I'm unable to.

I do not currently have a plan. I get up and take intentional walks at work 1-3 times a day, I have 1000 step route that I walk. I also get on the treadmill for 15-45 minutes, depending on the time and how I am feeling.

I do need to generate a real exercise plan and will do it. I just don't know what it looks like. A gym is not in picture. I just know I need to more than walk...

It might surprise you to know that playing Wii, playing an instrument, painting, heavy cleaning, playing with the kids, darts, acting, officiating at a sporting event are included! Look for things you may already be doing that you are not including in your exercise.

emoticon Warning - we over estimate the intensity and calories burned from exercise! For instance when you see something like heavy cleaning and house cleaning lumped together here on Sparkpeople, there is a BIG difference in the calories burned and actual amount of exercise done between heavy/house cleaning.

Please distinguish between intentional exercise and activity.

'Intentional exercise' - that which we do above and beyond our normal activities. For instance if you are a mail carrier what 'intentional exercise' do you after work?

emoticon Tracking Devices - Questions about counting minutes from devices, i.e. fitbit, spark tracker etc. Those minutes are activity minutes, NOT all are exercise minutes, only count your intentional exercise. Repeat - Only count exercise minutes NOT activity minutes as recorded by fitbit or spark activity tracker. We ONLY COUNT intentional exercise when adding fitness minutes to our team's total.

For example, I have a fitbit but I time my walks and workouts to track my exercise minutes. Overall Leader JMCADE says - I have a fitbit, and when I know I am heading out for a walk, I set the timer so that it tracks it as exercise minutes. Any minutes that are done for strength exercises are added separately.

As a general rule, to count as Aerobic you need to get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Strength training is easier to time. Stretching counts as fitness also but only if it is intentional and lasts for more than a few minutes.

Does your exercise plan include 'intentional exercise'?

Get out and have fun today! emoticon emoticon emoticon
