I do likewise with my Fitbit by tracking and activity like walking or hiking or paddleboating etc. I turn it on to time it.

My goal for intentional fitness is 30 mins of Cardio and 15 minutes of Strength training each day.

Yes. I walk a mile in the morning and a mile at lunch. I also make sure to be active by walking more than 250 steps every hour.

Yes I do. Gym, neighborhood walks, exercise bike. Plan to add Pilates and yoga classes.

I use my Samsung tracker to remind me to get up and move while at work and do not count it as exercise.

Yes, my exercise is definitely intentional. I walk with coworkers around the building or inside the corridors on our breaks when I am in the building, we use that as intentional exercise. Going to the gym is my other intentional exercise. I do not have a fitbit, but I do have a garmin vivosmart 3, and it actually has something that tells me the more intensity exercise and my goal is 150 min of higher intensity, I don't always get there and sometimes I go over. But anything I do at the gym is intentional.

This is a game changer for me as I have been using a lot of my daily activities and counting those calories. Now I will have to knuckle in and list only the 'intentional' exercises (which won't count much for me in terms of weight loss as calories burned)

Its really good to know that I should only be reporting my intentional exercise minutes not my active minutes recorded on my watch. I plan 5 intentional exercise activities into my week, but I often go above that by a lot.

Less than a half mile of my walking is incidental - I deliberately get up and walk for at least 10 minutes at a very brisk pace almost every hour because I have a desk job. Sometimes I plan it when my FitBit nags at me to get my hourly steps that I get the minimum for two hours back to back - like when my FitBit vibrates at 8:50, I will get my 8 o'clock min steps and my 9 o'clock min steps by walking until 9:05

I keep track of all my intentional exercise. I have a Fitbit Zip and it's adding ALL my steps onto my sparks fitness tracker so I have to go and delete what it adds then add my own intentional minutes. I don't know how to make it stop doing that. ARGHHHHH.

Today, you inspired me.

It might surprise you to know that playing Wii, playing an instrument, painting, heavy cleaning, playing with the kids, darts, acting, officiating at a sporting event are included! Look for things you may already be doing that you are not including in your exercise.

emoticon Warning - we over estimate the intensity and calories burned from exercise! For instance when you see something like heavy cleaning and house cleaning lumped together here on Sparkpeople, there is a BIG difference in the calories burned and actual amount of exercise done between heavy/house cleaning.

Please distinguish between intentional exercise and activity.

'Intentional exercise' - that which we do above and beyond our normal activities. For instance if you are a mail carrier what 'intentional exercise' do you after work?

emoticon Tracking Devices - Questions about counting minutes from devices, i.e. fitbit, spark tracker etc. Those minutes are activity minutes, NOT all are exercise minutes, only count your intentional exercise. Repeat - Only count exercise minutes NOT activity minutes as recorded by fitbit or spark activity tracker. We ONLY COUNT intentional exercise when adding fitness minutes to our team's total.

For example, I have a fitbit but I time my walks and workouts to track my exercise minutes. Overall Leader JMCADE says - I have a fitbit, and when I know I am heading out for a walk, I set the timer so that it tracks it as exercise minutes. Any minutes that are done for strength exercises are added separately.

As a general rule, to count as Aerobic you need to get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Strength training is easier to time. Stretching counts as fitness also but only if it is intentional and lasts for more than a few minutes.

Does your exercise plan include 'intentional exercise'?

Get out and have fun today! emoticon emoticon emoticon
