I am a recovering addict and I have a screen shot of the mug shot taken shortly after my last use. It is the background for my clean time counter. I also have a recent picture of myself that I really like. Whenever I start to feeling down on myself or hopeless I look at those pictures and the clean time counter and notice how much I have changed in that time. I notice the life in my eyes today and the way my smile beams. This leads me to the less obvious ways I have changed for the better. Seeing these changes in just a few short years inspires me to give each day my best effort if only out of curiosity on where life will take me next.

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." - Thomas A. Edison

Some people need that "negative" visual to remind them of how it could be worse...or how far they've gotten. If someone has already hit their bottom, and are climbing up out of it, some people need to be reminded where that bottom was so they don't gravitate towards it again.

It didn't say. It's a very long list, so all the items have very brief descriptions. I'm elaborating on them a lot. I know there was a lot of discussion over the negative item, since it would bring a lot of people down. Some of the Coping Skills are weird, and this is one of them.

Did it say why to carry the negative or sad item?

I agree on note #2, if I concentrate on the negative, it brings me down a lot.

Thanks for sharing!

Today's coping skill is: Inspire Yourself! Carry something positive with you to remind you to think on the bright side! It cold be a poem, a photo of a loved one, or a piece of jewelry that reminds you of something good!

---------------------------------

Note #1 on today's Coping Skill: Virtual Hope Box is an app on your phone. It's free, and you can load pictures on it to inspire you, you can distract yourself with puzzles, and more! It's going to have it's own Coping Skill page, but I wanted to mention in here, too!

Note #2 on today's Coping Skill: This paper also mentions carrying something negative, like a photo of a friend who ODed. I don't think that is good, but I'm leaving it here in the notes just so it's there.
