Dr. Jason Fung: "Holy consensus, Batman. With so many 'experts' from Michelle Obama to the USDA to virtually all of the medical professionals (including doctors and dieticians) agreeing that 'Eat Less, Move More' is the way to go, you might think that it is 100% unquestionably true. But here's a queer thought... if we all agree that we know the cure for obesity, and we've spent billions on educations and programs - why are we getting fatter? In other words, why does this 'cure' suck so bad?

Lots of good news - and some great news!

I got my labs done for the year (I'm fairly healthy so only see my primary once a year) and as is so often in the military health care system - I got a new Primary Care Provider. Now I'm not complaining - the care I get is excellent, but I go through a lot of doctors over the years. The good thing is my health care is documented in my file for the last 30 years, so it's pretty comprehensive.

A1C - 5.1 lowest ever. Period!

Glucose 67. Very low - but since I explained I was on a ketogenic diet, she was not concerned. Me - happy dance. Normal range 74-109.

Cholesterol - okay - the LDL is crazy. But after reading 3 books on cholesterol - I discount LDL altogether. My ratio is great. If the military sprang for differentiation on large fluffy LDL particles compared to small dense particles, I bet you would see me with tons of large fluffy particles. But it's an expensive test, and with all my health markers excellent, they do not see the need to perform that test. LDL 259 if anyone cares. I don't.

HDL - 73. Highest it's ever been. Desired range 35-100.

Triglycerides are 85. My ratio is 1.16. Best it's ever been. This coming from 2.92 some years back. She said my ratio was so good she wasn't worried about my LDL and I told her good, I wasn't taking statins anyways. She said everything else was so good statins weren't warranted.

I'm not going over every line, but my blood pressure was 107/70. And my weight was over 20 pounds less than last year!!

She said she rarely gets patients like me in her office - those that research their health. She does a lot of education evidently.

The one thing she said about keto was "when I went off we need to revisit your labs" as if it's something I'm going to stop. I just kept my mouth shut. She said it wasn't sustainable, but I know many of you who have done keto for years and are still going strong. You're my heroes and role models!

So all in all - a very successful and happy doctor's appointment!!
