whatever works best. I truly rarely ever test..i know if i am eating right i will be in ketosis. I'm not diabetic so no need for me to test. I do the breath thing every week or 2 just to see, and my numbers are usually at .5 or higher. .1 is ketosis..so i know i'm fine. I am not one that needs all the info..i get on the scale once a week only because i am on a challenge team that requires it. otherwise i'd probably get on once a month just to see. others like the numbers, or need them for medical reasons.
I've spent too much of my life needing to get on the scale daily or more, wanting numbers to "prove to myself" that i'm doing it right or i'd be losing. Keto gave me the freedom to know that if I stay with what I know is correct, not what i'd LOVE to be correct (so i make excuses and try to fit fruit or small amounts of other things in) I am in ketosis, and the weight loss is just a nice added bonus. I'm doing this to be healthy.....and since i stick to it like glue thats what matters to me.
Neither way is totally right or wrong. its personal choice.

Just did not work for me no matter what I did. Broke down and bought a blood ketone monitor and back to 1.5 first thing this morning.

lol but PS..it will tell you you are drunk if you are in ketosis..i get the beep beep beep warning every time...hahhaha

and here is some data someone used for it comparing to a really expensive ketoinix and her glucose strips..
Turns out these things really do work. I have a $13 Greenwon breathalyzer I just bought off Amazon and its readout jives with the Ketonix I have along with my Precision Xtra blood ketone meter.

Here's a link with more details of the comparison I did -- it's a response to the thread I read where I got this whole idea :

https://www.ketogenicforums.com/t/te...3
?u=jennifer72

Note: make sure to quickly breath out, into the breathalyzer, all the air in your lungs to where you are straining to exhale that last bit -- all in the short time it allows you. Don't take a deep breath before exhaling into the meter, just breath normally as if you were reading a book -- the highest concentration of acetone is at the tail of the breath anyways.

Link to the meter I got -- it's $13 after the discount is applied in the cart:

@nightskystar - where did you get an $11 breath ketone tester?? I've been looking all over online and the ketones mix brand is more like $100+ !? Amazon etc. Found outdated links to Amazon but they aren't there.

I have to agree. Alcohol is technically a poison, and in my understanding must be therefore burned first to get rid of it. Before fat, before carbs, before protein. Carbs run second place in that race, as high blood sugar is not good either, but not as bad as a poison.

So drinking alcohol should stop fat burning, and so stop ketone production.

Lesson learned, right?!? I hope your metabolism recovers quickly.

Dr. Jason Fung: "Holy consensus, Batman. With so many 'experts' from Michelle Obama to the USDA to virtually all of the medical professionals (including doctors and dieticians) agreeing that 'Eat Less, Move More' is the way to go, you might think that it is 100% unquestionably true. But here's a queer thought... if we all agree that we know the cure for obesity, and we've spent billions on educations and programs - why are we getting fatter? In other words, why does this 'cure' suck so bad?

Ramona-you are SO right about alcohol being a keto killer! Reading back up to 0.9 this morning. And as an added bonus my glucose is finally down to under 100! I thought there must be an error but i checked it 3 times!

Alcohol is the most likely culprit (it's a keto killer), and it can have a longer term impact than just a few hours. If your readings aren't where you want them to be in the morning, I'd give it a day or two before you blame it on the meter, LOL. Blood ketone monitors are really reliable. How fast you recover your ketosis depends on a number of factors as well.

All the sweeteners may be your problem...if you are eating a lot of chocolates and baked goods that will do it...
My breath meter was $11 I think. It works just fine..I compared it to the glucose meter and it was right on.

I tried a breath unit but it was a cheap one for only $25. I got a reading of .5 the first time and then every single time after that I got zero. I sent it back. Not sure it can be erythritol since I use that in just about everything I bake and even my chocolates. The rest of the time I use stevia. I did, however, have a cocktail today and I think that its probably what did it. Will do another tomorrow morning and if it's still screwy I may be sending this monitor back. Thanks for all your help!

something as simple as erythritol can do it. as ramona said...many factors. i dont test at all..drives you as crazy as getting on the scale daily and seeing ups and downs. i have a breath unit. i blow once a week before i'm out of bed. same time every week.

Also, you can't rely on urine strips... all they tell you is the degree to which you are wasting ketones, they don't correlate to blood levels, and they don't tell you if or to what degree you're burning ketones for fuel (keto-adapted... you can be producing high amounts of ketones but not necessarily burning them).

There could be a lot of reasons, but the most likely is that something you did/ate spiked your blood glucose... exercise can do it, food sensitivities can do it, cortisol spike can do it, etc.... which then tanked your ketones.

I'd start by checking your blood glucose levels and go from there.

Been using keto urine strips since mid-November. Been at moderate level for weeks. Bought a blood ketone monitor and received it yesterday. First test a couple hours after dinner last night came out at 1.5 mmoL. Did a fasting baseline this morning and it was 1.1. Instructions said to test before dinner when levels are supposed to be at the highest and it's coming in at 0.4! WTH???
