Rant/Rave Healthy Food. I agree with Brenda about reading labels because "healthy" can mean so many different things. One grocery store by us has a NuVal system. An independent lab tests the products and gives them a rating. The higher the number the healthier the product. I love it.

Red --- Pat on the back. We actually do this stretch at the end of our water aerobic class. Done.
White --- Menu plan. To be determined.
Blue --- My article of clothing was a pair of walking shorts. Sadly, they do not fit yet. emoticon
I will keep trying.

Rant/Rave Staying Motivated. I enjoy cutting pictures of realistic bodies and fashions from magazines to use as goal reminders. I love inspirational sayings. My twinnie gives me good advice and cheers me on!

The Red, White & Blue Challenges for July 31st

No 25 times for me hehe i was a late joiner of the group , i didn't sign up for the challenge but was allowed to part take what was there, i had fun :) 26 - 31 of July I did the following:

Red Challenge: 3 times
White Challenge: 4 times
Blue (Green) Challenge: 6 times

Red Challenge: I can't reach my back as such right now , gave one on back of my shoulder :)

White Challenge: I have started getting into spark meal plans for 3 days a week, so i write out their grocery and other things for the items i do not have in house that i would like to eat.

Blue (Green) Challenge: I had already done this a week ago with a top that was back of my closet, it fitted well then, feels even better now. I can see the difference in the photos that i took. I seem a little slimmer, not quiet there yet though.

Today's Rant or Rave Topic: Staying motivated!
I tend to read daily inspirational quotes, and tend to share them with my spark buddies and sometimes randoms too from the groups i belong too. If i am down i read my Taking down my evil nemesis blog, always seems to spark me up. Thinking positive, keeps me staying motivated.

EASY VACATION EXERCISES....Some suggestions were to bring an exercise band, jump rope, stress ball, or ankle weights because they don't take up a lot of room in your suitcase and you can do different exercises with them depending on what you bring (exercise band and jump rope being versatile and light!) If you don't want to bring equipment, you can do push ups for arms/chest, sit-ups for core, and lunges & calf raises for legs.

Thanks for sharing that link, Lol they are ugli looking things aren't they, i had this once but never again because it tasted so awful, but i didn't know what it was called, i thought they were just old ripened oranges, and i am usually someone who enjoys all fruits of the citrus family.

This is an easy one for me, woohoo. Been trying to get atleast 7 servings in and it has been working well so far.

Blue (Green) Challenge: Send a message of motivation, inspiration or congratulations to a fellow First Stepper! It has been a great month!
I usually do this often for my spark friends, but i added a few extra today for members of this group. :)

Today's Rant or Rave Topic: Healthy food products
Ah Healthy food products, why are they so expensive, i mean seriously, unhealthy foods are cheap and you end up sick and have so much doctor fees, which is pretty much same if you stay healthy with good healthy foods. I don't know how it is by you but healthy foods are 3x price of what an unhealthy version of it would be. Like for example, plain walnuts 3 bucks, sugar coated or chocolate walnuts 90 cents, does that make even sense?

Dee glad you liked my scale rant lol. It is true how unfriendly he can be when stepping on his toes, we do hope for the better results but sometimes it isn't so or that its not the progress we hope for.

The Red, White & Blue Challenges for July 29th

Red i am unable to do and White i aim for it but went 14 calories over my max.

Blue (Green) Challenge: SP has been highlighting rewarding ourselve when we reach goals. Post your reward you will give yourself if you lose weight this week.
If i do loose weight on my weekly weigh in on Friday, i would buy some hair accessory, if i see more progress on my inches, i would buy a new pants.

Today's Rant or Rave Topic: Phobias & Fears!
Only fear i have is walking on anything that isn't stable, like rope ladders, rocks or boulders that wobble a bit, tight rope sort activities, Haha and when i was pregnant oh damn was i afraid of mice, usually i have no issues with that lol. Normal phobias and fears i do not have otherwise.

Rant: The Scale. Jessica's response was funny, but true! I can be eating right and exercising daily and feeling really good. Then I step on the scale and it doesn't show a good result. Instant downer. I know there are other ways to view success, but seeing a lower number is really a big confirmation.

Interesting idea... Brush your teeth. Peppemint seems to wake-up your senses and get you feeling energized.
The article also suggests we track our fitness minutes and consider joining a challenge. This works really well for me.

Rave: Rewards. We should celebrate our successes. My problem is that I buy things or treat myself before I've accomplished anything.

emoticon Red Challenge: We are nearing the end of the month and really need to push ourselves these last few days! So that means Push-ups!!! Do 100 push-ups today. It can be regular push-ups, bench push-ups or wall push-ups or any combination of these. Can't do it all at once? No problem! Do 10 - 15 each trip to the bathroom or fridge.

The Red, White & Blue Challenges for July 28th

White Challenge: Eat a balanced diet today! Refer to the food pyramid if needed, but try to have something from all of the food groups. emoticon
Some things i ate today, Fruit and raw vegetables, condiments in my soup, Milk and cheese, and noodles for grain. I had no meat today but i did have some legumes for protein part.

Blue (Green) Challenge: You can do anything you want to do if you put your mind to it! Let's give it a try today and practice a few basic belly dance movements! This video will help you! Don't be afraid, give it a try! emoticon
I had my mind set on 30m bike ride (stationary bike) and to do some boxing movements from another challenge for today. I got my 30m bike, and 30 m wii including boxing, and hula hoop for that belly dancing movements lol. As for actual belly dance right now i dont have a belly thats that flexible to do so anymore lol.

I find it quiet motivating rewarding my goals, My signature shows my miles stones that i have reached, hmm gives me an idea to update the rewards i gave, will do after i post this, so when u read this you be able to see then my rewards too.

Ha this day i didn't even think i would get past my 30m minimal. My legs hurt, were swallon and all. I wrote a blog about it called .. Going the extra mile ... I ended up doing 115 minutes for the day!!!

My normal serving Ha i don;t know what my normal serving is. I aim for minimal 8 but last few days i have gotten into the double digits on consuming water, it could just be from the heat. 27th i got down 14 glasses of 8 oz each. I did moisturize myself was quiet dry in some areas. Esp my feet. I felt like i had new feet lol.

Rant - Scale
Ever had someone accidentally walk on your feet? That hurt didn't it and you got mad at them didn't you? I think my scale has toes and doesn't like me stepping on them, Ha he is certainly not my friend.

EASY FRUIT SMOOTHIE
Frozen fruit or Fresh fruit & Ice
Water as needed
Sweetener if needed
Put in blender! YUM!!

EASY "ICE CREAM"
1 c Frozen fruit (berries, etc)
1/2 c Plain Greek yogurt (or use non-fat vanilla Greek yogurt)
Sweetener
Put frozen fruit in bowl and stir yogurt & sweetener into the fruit....it will start freezing around the fruit and turn into "ice cream". It tastes like berry ice cream (or whatever fruit you use....banana, etc - be creative!) You can top with a dollop of low-fat whipped topping or a few nuts for protein if you want too!

Ah thanks for the welcome and insight, i will participate in next months for the the challenges, do you mind if i still partake in the challenges of the last week of July, these challenges look great after you grasps its concept, i don't mind that i don't win the goodie, its just for the fun and experience.

The Red, White & Blue Challenges for July 26th

Red Challenge: Take a break today -- a commercial break! Walk or march in place during every commercial break of a program you watch. emoticon This was a fun one for me, i didn't watch tv much today, but i did with the program i watched.

White Challenge: Start your day off right -- plan and eat a healthy breakfast either today or tomorrow. (or both!!) emoticon I usually have a healthy balanced, i did have it later than usual though because when i awoke i wasn't hungry, night before dinner kept me full for many many hours lol.

Blue (Green) Challenge: Post a healthy tip for your fellow participants that can help them on their weightloss journey. . Stay true to yourself, Stay positive, If the scale doesn't show results find other methods, measuring, how clothes fit etc.

Red --- Non-Traditional Exercise: my version of statue tag for one. I formed odd positions in front of the mirror and held the stretch for as long as I could.

White --- New Beverage. Soy Milk, Berry, Banana Smoothie. It was purple. Good, but had a very strong banana flavor.

Blue --- I feel like a bride. Something new and blue. We went to a vegetarian restaurant for the first time. The food was delicious.

Rant: Skinny people claiming they need to lose weight. I'm envious that they can take off 1 or 2 pounds immediately instead of waiting until they have 10 or more to lose. If they are really skinny, then I feel sorry that they also might have an eating disorder.

07/25/12
Red --- Schedule Workouts. Done.

White --- Blog. Done.

Blue --- Extra 30 minutes sleep. Easy. We just got home from a mini vacation. It felt good to sleep in our bed.

Rant/Rave: SparkPeople. Love, love, love all of you and this website. The only rant is that I can spend way too much time on the computer.

White --- Plan and eat a healthy breakfast. My favorite healthy breakfast is blueberries, skim milk and Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal.

Blue --- Healthy Tip: Morning workouts = more energy and positive attitude throughout the day.

Rave: Toys and Games. I love outdoor games like Bocce Ball and Ladder Golf. I love card games and board games. I like parties that include games. More fun than sitting and eating.

How I Handle Family Get Togethers "Without Missing Out"

I have some healthy ideas, but I need to practice them more.
1. Bring healthy food to share.
2. Make people and activities the center of my attention.
3. Burn extra calories off.
4. Eat a salad or broth before hand to take the edge off my appetite.

Hi Jessica! Welcome to the team. The Red White and Blue Challenge is getting close to wrapping up. For this challenge, we post 3 challenges each day for people to try an accomplish. Our month long goal was to do 25 of these challenge in each category (red challenges, white challenges and blue challenges) by the end of the month to receive a goodie reward. You are welcome to do the challenges for the next week if you would like.

As for the list, it is a fun game to see if we can come up with an alphabet of healthy foods. As for the vegetable stock, there are a lot of great recipes out there for creating your own stock from scratch to avoid the high sodium you get from canned broth. How does this challenge work, where do you post results and such? What is with the Healthy Food List? I never considered any type of stock to be healthy due to them making your sodium levels rise like crazy , even low sodium one seem to still have alot.

Red --- Fitness Throwdown. Brenda and I did a WPU challenge.
White --- Get Rid of 1 Junk Food. Threw out a bag of Cheetos.
Blue --- 5 Reasons to get on floor: Pray, Sit and Meditate, Dance Move, Crawl, Clean bottom shelf of pantry.

Workout Tunes Rave... I love to dance!

7/22/12
Red --- Free Day Activity. Grocery shopping and laundry.
White --- Add to healthy food ABC list. Done.
Blue --- Goodie. I gave myself the colorful tupperware to remind myself to store leftovers in the refrigerator and not on my hips and thighs. Save time, money, and calories by cooking at home and eating twice off one meal.

Water Rave... I might be part mermaid. I love water! Waterfalls, the sound of waves crashing, walking with my toes in the water, exercising in water, swimming, water balloon fights, Zumba in the pool, and drinking water!! I can't get enough.

Red --- "I feel good" after dancing to that fun video.
White --- Use a healthy recipe. I made a healthier macaroni salad by using whole wheat pasta and adding extra vegetables.
Blue --- Forgot to weigh, but my pants are fitting better. Reward myself with deep breathing exercises and meditation time.

Habits Rant... hard to change. Some times I'll have a healthy habit going (daily exercise) and then I skip a few days. It's very easy to give up and not get back into the new habit. That's where the SP Challenges help out. Living up to my personal commitments motivates me!

emoticon Red Challenge: Free workout day! Just do something active and get credit. If your heatwave cooled off, go have fun outdoors. If not, work up a sweat carrying laundry or groceries up the stairs. Go shopping at the mall. Anything that gets you out of your chair and moving. Dancing anyone?

emoticon White Challenge: Add to the ABC's of Healthy Foods. On the Participant's thread, there is a list that is started with the letter A and going through letter Z. In turn, add a healthy food item to that list. You can only add one item at a time and then you must wait for someone else to post before you add another item. thur 7/19 choklit! could dive into it, swim around in it... eat it daily. it is 1 of my eating compromises, have cocoa daily in my coffee even in summer :)

fri 7/20 housework, always wished i didn't have to... it never ends... but i try to make it fun, with music & part of my get up & move each day! dance with a rag & broom knocking out cobwebs... today i pulled the freezer out to unplug to defrost & promptly dropped 3 things behind it, now that was fun!!! (not!!!) lol so glad sil showed up!

sat 7/21 workout tunes! many, sometimes the radio rocks! someday might even figure out some of those newfangled things they invented beyond the 8-track & walkman tape players... for now, i am still using my old pink transistor radio! lol ;)

emoticon Red Challenge: ime for a bike ride. If you have a bike, get it out of the garage and get on it! Take a 20 minute or more ride. Planning to go out to eat tonight? Ride your bike to the restaurant. Wanted to go to the movies? Hop on and ride like the wind. If you don't have a bike to ride, never fear! You can do a silly bike ride from the comfort of your bed or living room floor! Just lay down, stick your legs in the air, use your hands or a pillow as a support under your back and just start peddling with your legs as if you were riding a bike. The silly part? Just look at yourself in the mirror as you do it!! (exercise bikes work for this challenge too, but aren't as much fun!)

7/14 White -- Breakfast dinner. Making German Pancakes tonight. Used egg whites for 1/2 the eggs; omitting butter; and filling with fresh blueberries.

07/15 Red -- 25 Squats. Love a challenge to do more! Done
White -- 1/2 Caffiene or Soda. I think I'm addicted. Gave myself a migraine headache when I cut it out totally.
Blue -- Increase sleep time by one hour. Done!

7/16 Red -- Bike ride. It's finally cool enough to do this outside. I love bike riding!
White -- Try something new. I tried making my herbal orange spice tea into iced tea. It worked, but I would have liked it better with some articial sweetner.
Blue -- Movie night. We watched The Ugly Truth, starring my favorite Gerard Butler and the dazzling Katherine Heigl. Very funny comedy. No snacks.

7/17 Red -- Educational walk. 1 hour at the Botanical Gardens. Love, love, love that place. Sorry I forgot my camera.
White -- Family dinner affair. My DH and son help me most nights.
Blue -- Temptation: Dessert included with my meal at Perkins. Ordered a bowl of fruit 'n walnuts with drizzle of a vanilla topping. It was dreamy!!

Made dinner with Mike....shared effort...we made breakfast for dinner together! I needed an extra set of hands with 3 pans going and it was fun! Which also allowed me to complete my other challenge!

My DH had a big bowl of Rocky Road ice cream....and I wanted it really bad! Instead, I pulled out some frozen blackberries, put some crunchy walnuts on it, added a dollop of cool whip and it was a yummy frozen treat that tasted great!

MAKING ROOM FOR YOURSELF IN YOUR SCHEDULE.....RAVE! We should always be priority #1. I used to come behind everyone else when my son was in school - I volunteered for school, scouts, drama, etc. and took care of the house and family as well - it took every minute, so my weight was last on the list! Now that my son is an adult and on his own, I get to focus on me. I don't work outside of the house, I have my own schedule, I can make my own meal plans, and I can focus on myself. This time is for me!

For dessert, I had frozen some blackberries, so I took them, put a few walnut slices on them, and topped with lite cool whip....it was wonderful! Cool, refreshing, and like a berry "ice cream"!

Watched "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol"....love it - we gave it to Mike for Father's Day! Nothing on TV, so we've been watching movies. Had Orville's 100 calorie pack of Kettle Corn....my favorite!

MOVIE THEATERS.....RAVE! We go almost every weekend as our date night....sometimes by ourselves and sometimes with family or friends! I love movies on the big screen, love hearing other people laugh, etc., and I love going out. Even though movie prices have gone up, we buy them online at a bulk price for our theater so it cuts the price in half! Also, Costco sells other theaters around us for a discount rate, so really we never need to pay full price. The snacks are expensive (RANT) so I sometimes sneak some in even though they are not allowed (a diet popcorn for me) but my DH still LOVES to get the theater popcorn every time - no matter what the cost! LOL It's his splurge, so I don't mind....he buys one diet drink and we share it.....I know it's going to cost $10-$15, but he's worth it. :)

Red challenges - tue 7/17, 12/17 would be nice to get out lol ;)

White Challenges - tue 7/17, 16/17 pts exploring pureed & liquid foods with dad! (i want a baby bullet!!! ;)

Blue Challenges - tue 7/17, 14/17 pts could not understand why i was climbing the walls for choklit cake until i remembered i'd seen Rachel Ray making/tasting wedding cakes & frostings... oh my, i could've dove in! once i realized why, i was able to set it aside... funny how strong visual triggers can be :)

rants~n~raves ~ making room for yourself in schedule ~ essential, not selfish! there are extraordinary times when it is tougher, but i finally understand taking care of myself is essential or i won't be able to function... and then what. i am as committed to it now as i have ever been to external obligations such as school & job & others... who knew? i wish i had figured this out a long time ago... but seemed to have missed this important lesson when i was growing up... (sighs) never 2 late to change. i'm on it now!

Playing a little catch-up myself. I've been swamped this week with work. Client in tomorrow and then a quick business trip the rest of the week.

I haven't been on a real bike for decades. Had to do the pretend. Started, but it was hard on my knee so I didn't get very far.

Today's Rant or Rave Topic: Movie theaters
Love the new theatres that have the arm-rests that go up. I get to snuggle up with hubby but am not so tight in the seat that I'm uncomfortable. Rant -- the price keeps going up. Hubby complains when I rent an on-demand movie for $5, but if we go to the theatre, with drinks it is easily $50 or more. We are getting pickier about which movies we go see and which we wait to rent.

I've been working on this. I fill up my water bottle before work and I finish it before allowing my first diet dew. Same for when I get home. Water is tasting better on these hot days.

The Red, White & Blue Challenges for July 16th

Red Challenge: Time for a bike ride. If you have a bike, get it out of the garage and get on it! Take a 20 minute or more ride. Planning to go out to eat tonight? Ride your bike to the restaurant. Wanted to go to the movies? Hop on and ride like the wind. If you don't have a bike to ride, never fear! You can do a silly bike ride from the comfort of your bed or living room floor! Just lay down, stick your legs in the air, use your hands or a pillow as a support under your back and just start peddling with your legs as if you were riding a bike. The silly part? Just look at yourself in the mirror as you do it!! (exercise bikes work for this challenge too, but aren't as much fun!)

White Challenge: Challenge yourself to try something new. A new food or a new recipe or perhaps just a new way to fix an old favorite. Post what you came up with.


Blue (Green) Challenge: Have a movie night! Your choice to either go to the movie theater, rent a movie, dig out a dvd from your collection or find one on TV. Sit back and enjoy the show. What's the catch? No unhealthy snacking during the movie. Either find a healthy snack that fits in your calories goals for the day, or use this time to sip on a low/no calorie beverage. The main purpose is to give yourself a couple of hours of relaxing time. Escape into the movie and let the stress of the week melt away! (take credit for this challenge when you find the time to fit in a movie night.)

I use a 16 or 24 oz cup and always have lots of ice and lemon juice in my water....it's a very refreshing "beverage"! Before I know it, the cup is empty and I'm filling it up again!

SLEEP.....RAVE! I love sleep....and as I've gotten older, I've noticed that I do best with a good 8 hours....or 9! LOL (Probably because I get up a couple times a night....darn that water drinking!) I can get buy with less, but eventually I have to sleep in on a weekend, but I don't take naps! :)
