My affirmation: I will live mindfully (stay in the moment).

Someone (wish I could remember who) said something to the effect that the past is gone and the future is yet to come; all we have is this moment to live and to enjoy. For me, when I achieve it, paying attention to each moment (and I don't always find it easy) makes for a more fulfilling life.

As far as I understand, this concept is one of the basis of Buddhism, which I have been reading/learning about for more than a dozen years. I've taken a few classes and meditate--my goal is to do it every day--although I don't attend any activities on a regular basis.

Best,

Michelle

My affirmation statement:
I am dedicated to making progress in my health and my life with each passing day, and I will achieve my goals if I maintain my course.

Regarding the thoughts on meditation:
A friend of mine burned a CD for me called "I Can Make You Thin" by Paul McKenna. It apparently came with a book of the same name which I have not read, but the author (and narrator for the CD) leads you through a guided meditation on weight loss. It takes about 25 minutes and I've listened to it many nights in the past couple months. I highly recommend it, if nothing else it seems to provide an opportunity to refocus your attention on a daily basis. I'm not sure where you can get it, but it's possible it may be available for download on iTunes.

Just as a thought, I was wondering if anyone would like to play in making the longest affirmation ever by each person adding one word to what the previous person has written.

Thus, I could start with, "I". The next person would write, "I am" and the next person might write, "I am healthy" and so on. Separated by commas and/or semi-colons as the need dictated, we could see how all-encompassing an affirmation we could make. I know affirmations don't have to be long but this is just a thought for fun.

So,

I

I really like this idea. I think when you TRULY believe what your affirmation says, then you FREE yourself from the things that keep you tied down and ultimately make you fail. Once you love yourself you are able to achieve anything, any boulder in front of you on your path to success turns into a pebble that you can jump over. Good luck with the statements, fantastic idea!!!

The long version:
I am strong, lovable, loving and compassionate. I am healthy in body, mind and spirit. I am generous, giving, forgiving, joyful, teachable, adaptable and grateful. I am open, receptive and responsive to my greater good. I am safe and secure in my world.

The short version:
I am healthy in body, mind and spirit.

Or, as Emile Coue said: Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.

Émile Coué (February 26, 1857–July 2, 1926) was a French psychologist and pharmacist who introduced a method of psychotherapy, healing, and self-improvement based on optimistic autosuggestion: "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better" (Couéism or the Coué method).

Most of us have lower self-esteem than we should, especially if our body image is less than perfect.

We come to SP and set goals to be healthier, but it can be such hard work. We tend to doubt our ability to achieve our goals and often engage in negative self-talkeven without realizing it.

What is negative self-talk?
- Negative beliefs you have about yourself and of which you remind yourself daily.
- Negative statements about yourself that you sprinkle in your every-day conversation.
- Self-deprecating remarks that influence your behavior or beliefs.
- Negative descriptions given to you by members of your family or peer group when you were younger onto which you hold even to this day.
- Negative feedback you get from your spouse, boss, teacher, colleagues, children, parents, relatives, friends, or others that you take personally and incorporate into your personal belief system.

What we need instead is to learn to affirm and support ourselves to provide encouragement to meet our goals. One strategy to build us up is through use of self-affirmations or affirmation statements.

What is an affirmation statement?
- Healing, positive self-talk that you say to yourself to counter your negative self-talk.
- Vehicles by which you can free yourself from the over-dependence on others opinions, attitudes, or feelings about you so that you can feel good about yourself.
- The visualization of a new order and sense in your life, which you can work toward achieving.
- A way to take personal responsibility for your health and emotional stability.
- A way to let go of negative emotional baggage you have been carrying, so you can deal with your life in a realistic and positive manner.
- The resolution of feelings from the past so that you can face the present with a less obstructed view.

Please visit the wonderful website www.coping.org/growth/affirm.htm#sel
f
for much more marvelous information about the importance of countering negative self-talk with positive self-affirming statements. I have borrowed here only a small fraction of what is offered there.

I AM CHALLENGING EACH OF US TO ADOPT AN AFFIRMATION STATEMENT, which should be designed for your own specific needs. There are three examples below in very different styles, from which you can borrow, and the above website will help you build your own from scratch and explain how to maximize your use of it..

The idea is to read your affirmation statement out loud to yourself every day to build yourself up. This might sound silly to some of you, but it is really, really powerful medicine. Even if the attributes mentioned in your affirmation statement are your ideal qualities and not quite your strengths, making this statement will strengthen them within you. You grow to believe it... and then you achieve it. (That sounded pretty corny!)

You can even carry your statement around on an index card and review it throughout the day. You might even want to create a one-line synopsis to use as a memorized mantra to say to yourself whenever you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk. For this you could say, for instance, I am lovable and capable; able to make the right choices and become the best me.

Our team's discussion thread, "I am..." is a mini version of this in that we have been challenged to post a positive word or phrase about ourself everyday as an exercise in self-affirmation.

You will be surprised at how powerful these statements feel to say and to hear. It might even make you giddy with gratitude and relief to be reminded that you really are worthwhile. You may feel the positive effects immediately or over time. Dont feel discouraged if you have to practice this awhile before you really start to feel it. So many of us have been conditioned to dismiss affirmation of ourselves.

You deserve to believe your affirmation statement with your whole being. Please use this amazing tool to better yourself.

Here are the samples:

#1) Short and sweet, geared for a specific goal. I actually use the long one below and include this one toward the end to address my weight-loss goals.

I love myself; therefore I eat only those foods that are good for me.
I am self-disciplined to help me more easily reach my weight goals.
I now live a healthy lifestyle and exercise daily.
I set goals and achieve them more easily because I deserve to succeed.
I can now more easily attain my ideal weight.

(Adapted from Jeff Staniforth on http://www.affirmware.com.au/Sculptor-Priv
ate/ideal_weight.html)

#2) The big, long one. Trim or modify to be the most meaningful to you.

I, _____________, am a person of integrity with a good attitude and specific goals. I have a high energy level, am enthusiastic, and take pride in my appearance and what I do. I have a sense of humor, wisdom, and the vision, empathy, and courage to use my talents effectively. I have character and am knowledgeable. My convictions are strong and I have a healthy self-image, a passion for what is right, and a solid hope for the future.
I am an honest, sincere, hard-working person. I am tough but fair and sensitive. I'm disciplined, motivated, and focused. I am a good listener and patient, but take decisive action. I am bold, authoritative, and confident, yet humble. I am an encourager, a finder of good, an excellent communicator, and am developing winning habits. I am a student, a teacher, and a self-starter. I am obedient, loyal, responsible, dependable, and prompt. I have a servant's heart, am ambitious, and am a team player. I am personable, optimistic, and organized. I am consistent, considerate, and resourceful. I am intelligent, competent, persistent, and creative. I am health-conscious, "balanced, and sober of spirit. I am flexible, punctual, and thrifty.
I have faith in myself. I am an honorable person who is truly grateful for the opportunity life has given me.
ADD AT MORNING: These are the qualities of the winner I was born to be, and I am fully committed to develop these marvelous qualities with which I have been entrusted. Today is the first day of the rest of my life, and it is wonderful.

ADD AT EVENING: These are the qualities of the winner I was born to be, and I am fully committed to develop these marvelous qualities with which I have been entrusted. Tonight I'm going to sleep wonderfully well. I will dream powerful, positive dreams. I will awaken energized and refreshed, and tomorrow's going to be magnificent.

(Adapted from Zig Ziglar on http://chiron.valdosta.edu/whuitt/brilstar
/affstate.html)

#3) Medium-sized and about achieving goals in general, in a more poetic sort of style that isn't for everybody.

Today is a great day and I will live it to its fullest.
I do not allow failure to take residence in my life,
Nor, do I allow myself to collect the dust of idleness.
I rise when knocked down and shake off the complacency of the world,
As my extended hand allows others to get up once more as well,
I will climb the steps of disappointment, failure, and ridicule,
Until I have reached the pinnacle of success.
I am responsible for me and my determination no one can take away.
I am an achiever, I am a believer, even if there is no one else, I am!

(Adapted from Carey Whitlow on http://chiron.valdosta.edu/whuitt/brilstar
/affstate.html)

MAKE THESE YOUR OWN AND CRUSH THE PESSIMISM IN YOUR LIFE!

(Let me know if you need any further help with this from me. I believe in you... you should too!)
