I haven't made it out to get a new pedometer ... so I pinned it to my pocket ... that way it won't fall off and reset!

We're taking our kids to the Blasco Library for a field trip today ... they have a program in the Hirt auditorium today at 9:30 and 11:30am.
Bugs and Moose, Out on the Loose - Singer/guitarist Tom Sieling presents humorous songs with audience participation.

Take the bus downtown for a morning of fun with your kids or grandkids.

Dick's Sporting Store carried pedometers. Stephen brought me one home from GE and it's holding up good.

I have another great place to walk ... the Erie Zoo!!! What fun we had. I'm not sure how far I walked up hill and down.
We started about 10:15 and never sat down until lunch 2 hours later ... then we walked from the picnic area to the train and back again before coming home. I'm sure I walked a couple of miles ... I'll have to track by time today!

I need a new pedometer ... one won't stay on and resets every time it hits the floor ... the other fell off when I was out the other day and I have no idea where it is.

Does anyone know where I can find a good one?

We took our kids to Frontier Park for labyrinth activities on Monday ... that would be a nice place to go and include the labyrinth in our walk ... maybe a starting or ending point.

Here are a few walking tips to keep in mind when choosing a place to walk (run/bike) ...

Walk facing the traffic: Especially if there are no sidewalks or pathways on your route, the “rules of the road” say you should walk against the traffic. This also keeps you aware of any potential danger coming towards you.

Vary your route: This is for safety as well as enjoyment. It is much more interesting to experience different surroundings from time to time. This also prevents anyone from memorizing your route and perhaps knowing the best time to approach you.

Beware of drivers: Do not assume that drivers know when pedestrians have the “right of way.” Be especially cautious of driveways- most drivers are watching for oncoming cars, not walkers.

Avoid high volume traffic roads: Avoid these areas especially during rush hour. It is 'Heart Healthier" to stay away from the fumes found in heavy traffic.

Hope this helps us pick good sites for our walks

Carra ... what is the walking path like at the park. One of our members doesn't walk on cement because it is too hard on her knees and is hoping it is a different sort of path ...

sounds fun. Maybe we'll go as a family to check it out. I used to live down that way, wish we would have taken advantage of it then!

I haven't been to Scott Parks fitness trail in a while .... it was a trail with a barked path ... a stroller should be fine there. Also ... there is a covered picnic area, play ground, sand volleyball courts, ball fields etc. I work at Tracy and we often take the pre school kids for walks on the trails in the woods too.

Is Scott Park more of a trail? I haven't actually been down there. Wondering bc I'll have a stroller anywhere I go!

I usually walk Presque Isle or neighborhoods...or the mall in the winter.

I walked the other end of Asbury today. From the tennis courts to the bridge over walnut creek and back. 1.4 miles in either direction. A lot farther than I went on the nature center side, but still a nice jaunt.

I thought about the yard sales, but my kids don't like to go and I can't seem to get out of the house without them. Probably won't go. But I did go to a couple of sub-division sales last weekend and got some serious walking in there.

Another place I thought about but haven't used in a while ... the fitness trail at Scott Park. I think it is one mile with exercise stations along the way.

I work in the preschool at Tracy School so we often walk to Scott Park and walk through the woods with our kids. I know I get a lot of exercise doing that, but I should take a pedometer just to see how far we do walk!

How about in North East tomorrow (5/17) The community yard sales are tomorrow, so you can get cardio and strength training carrying all your loot! (it has some pretty nice scenery too)

Lilfae ... where is Woodcock?

I never thought about walking on a college campus. I suppose I would be afraid I would stand out being one of the oldest people there. Of course ... they could think I'm a professor!!!

If you aren't in the city, McKean has a great walking path at the park on Rt. 99. From my guesstimate, it is about 1/2 a mile around. There is a nice playground for the kids and my son takes his bike. It is not near a road, you don't cross any roads, so I can let the kids go and not worry about them!

If you want to make the trek down to Woodcock, there are great hiking trails or you can walk the dam.

It's also nice to walk/run the local college campuses.

Anywhere along the bayfront parkway. There is a nice walk/bike path along most of it.

This could be a good resource of places to walk (or run) in our area. If you know of any good places to walk (picnic areas, community parks, etc.) let's list them here so everyone has several options for outdoor exercise.

Three places that come to mind for me would be Frontier Park, Presque Isle and Asbury Woods.

If you think of other good places post them here!
