The person above me is truly one of the most beautiful people that I know! She is an encourager, we share the same values and love of family, and she always has such a wonderful way with words - my day is always better when Julia has entered into it. emoticon

I'm not much of a decorator, but I do have two door hanging items that I use - one our front door, and one the side door that most people use. I also use the garden flags , one on a porch post, and one in my fall garden with mums. Inside I have two table runners that I use, one on our old wood stove, and one on our mudporch on an old antiques potting table. I have bought a lot of those silk leaves, so sprinkle them around on flat surface, sometime add a candle or two, sometimes put out a set or two of pilgrims, sometimes two basket-woven cornucopias with artificial fruit in them.
And this is my ore typical "decor"... (I couldnt find the pictres I was looking for, but saw this one instead!)

That's a very cool food mill, I have never seen one before. My son and I love old fashion kitchenware, he bought himself an old blender on eBay a few years ago and that's what he uses to grind coffee beans. I have a red retro wall phone in the kitchen that my son gave me a few Christmases ago.

Well, I decorated the entrance door with an autumn wreath and put a bunch of orange and red artificial flowers in front of our property's bedrock. No indoor decorations until Christmas. I don't plan on going all out on Halloween either. Last year for the first time ever, someone stole some of our decorations, that was very disheartening, to put it mildly.

Same question: How does the person above me decorate (inside and/or outside) in the autumn?

This is a Foley Food Mill that I use when making spaghetti sauce, or tomato juice, for applesauce, and also for pumpkins and butternut squash. I've been using one of these for as long as I can remember, because I always helped my mother with canning, and as a very little girl, I loved turning that handle around. I don't find it to be quite the fun as I did then!!

And how does the person above me decorate (inside and/or outside) in the autumn?

I have a good old fashion alarm clock that my son gave me a few years ago. I'm an early riser, 4 a.m. is the usual, but with my hubby's schedule it can be 2:30.

What old-fashion gadget does the person above me own?

Kathy, I agree with your answer below, 100%! Wouldn't that be great?

To be honest, I don't like the summer and the only enjoyable part of the summer so far has been the boys' birthdays this past June. Pretty pathetic, huh? I'm an autumn girl.

What can't the person above me not leave home without?

Honestly, I'd head back to the 1950's and Mayberry - where people had an appreciation of family, there was respect for elders, there were manners, people just seemed so much more contented with what they had. people worked hard and didn't expect free handouts, there was balance. (Pretty boring answer, isn't it?)

What has the person above me most enjoyed about this summer so far?

I've lived all my life in the city, it's the only way of life I know. I sometimes think it would be nice to live in the country, somewhere quiet and safer, although I know there aren't any places that are 100% safe. Crime-wise, it has gotten really scary living in my area in the recent years and my husband would like to move from here when he retires, but I just can't imagine where.
I wouldn't want to be isolated from other people though.

What era would the person above me visit if she could go back in time?

No, I don't see myself ever moving from here, unless it would be to live with a daughter or into a nursing home because I (or we) can no longer take care of myself. And since I really do not want to do either of those, so it is a back-0f-my-mind motivation to keep myself somewhat healthy. / That being said, it does not mean that I will always be "content" living here, because I get frustrated when things aren't kept up (maintained) like I would like them to be. And it seems that both of us are not keeping up like we used to do! / Third thought regarding your question: There are times that I think I would love to live in a smaller, more modern, and on less acreage than we do now - so I COULD better maintain it all - but then I can't think of a single place where that would be. We have lived here for 39 years, and it belonged in my family for many years before that, and it is where my paternal grandparents settled as immigrants from Russia (though they considered themselves to be German) - I just honestly cannot picture myself being happy elsewhere or with neighbors that are visible. I do like my privacy!

Same question to you: Do you envision ever living elsewhere than you do now?

Kathy, your son is a sweetheart, God bless him! I love that you have things that belonged to your parents and grandparents. The only thing I have of my mom, besides a few pairs of curtains, is her bedroom lamp, the shade is in poor condition but if I replace it, then it won't be her lamp anymore.

And yes, you are right about the board games, lol! I have a cabinet with a tinted glass door where I keep the games. emoticon
My hubby is the one with the green thumb, he used to keep plants on our porch fence, but the stray cats would get into them or knock them over. We do have a small backyard, but it's hardly used because we're surrounded by taller buildings and there's no privacy. We live in a two family brick home. Through the 20 plus years that we live in our neighborhood, they have knocked down several homes to put up residential buildings. There are just a few houses left here. We live on the second floor and we are getting the first floor ready for our son. When he finishes college (he's in his fourth year) and gets a steady job, he will be moving downstairs, so we'll be his landlords, lol!
So to answer your question, no more plants, just flowers in a vase occasionally.

Does the person above me envision moving to another place someday in the future?

My home: I strive for a cross between traditional and country. We have all wallpaper because of the old house, and plaster walls underneath (kind of rough and uneven - wallpaper covers a mulititude of wall problems). I love old country homes, but I'm not into all the country decorating that you see in pictures - too much to dust, and it's all for looks. I do love using old country things that belonged to my grandparents or my parents, feel that I "honor my heritage" that way. And yes, I dream about neatness, seldom fully acquire it. My son went to West Point, where they had to keep everything military neat at all times, and had to pass "white glove" inspections. I was so nervous the first time he came home, knowing he would see dirt and dust and disorder that he probably never noticed while he still lived at home, and afraid of what he would think of his messy home (and mother!). When I mentioned that to him when he got here, he gave me a hug and said, "Mom, you may not be the best housekeeper, but your house is not dirty, it just looks lived in. I'll always love coming home to it." So yes, "homey and warm" is what I strive for most. And maybe I've achieved that. It's all about perpective and priorities, isn't it? I already had your home pictured in my mind as homey, because I know you like playing board games with your family - the two go together!! emoticon

Does the person above me keep houseplants? Outdoor flowers? (not knowing what your city home looks like... do you have a yard? ... hope that's not a dumb question)

I would say my personal style is traditional, warm, comfy and inviting. I like a neat home but one that looks lived in. When my sister lived in NY, she had a lovely home, but it didn't feel inviting. I felt like I had to be careful where I sat, where I put my cup, etc., it was more display than homey. I like homey.

Same question: How does the person above me describe her style of decorating?

I only have one bookshelf that is visible to others, so it is the only one that I also use for a bit of decor. The shelves are incorported into our "entertainment center" (TV and DVD/VCR player and remotes). On it I have my father's chess board standing upright and chess pieces in an old jar), I put our "pretty books" on those shelves, I use old sadirons as bookends, but really that's about it. The shelves are primarily for holding books!! (On the top of the shelving though, we have an eclectic collection of antiques that "came with the house" - so many are my grandparents' things, or little things that I have picked up at estate auctions, things like a coffee grinder, colored mason jars, vintage tools, glass insulators from electric poles, etc.)

Related to that question is this for you: How dioes the person above me describe her style of decorating?

I am most happy when I'm doing things as they should be done and with the right attitude. So, my happiness depends on me and making right choices in each day. And many of the threads of that fabric have to do with putting others needs before my own, and feeling "God's hand on my shoulder" and hearing Him say, "We're having a good day together, aren't we?"

Of course, I could also say when I hear the birds singing early in the morning, or watching a beautiful sunrise, or taking a walk in the tranquility of nature makes me happy.

What's one simple thing in life that ALWAYS makes you smile? (...no matter what else is going on in your life).

Kathy, those are really, beautiful positives! I "love" that you felt like singing in church, that's God telling you, everything is going to be alright! I'm sure He had his hand on your shoulder.

And thank you for your kind words, I am grateful for your friendship too! Believe me! It is so nice to have someone to chat with who can relate! emoticon

Positives? Here goes...
1. Although I can't workout, I "can" walk, and for that I am so grateful to God! No dumb neck is going to stop me! emoticon
2. Spring is just a week away and I'll be able to go to the park to walk, they'll be people around, right now it's too cold and solitary for walking alone.

3. Although it's more of a torture session right now, lol, I am grateful to be able to go to physical therapy and pay for it with my birthday money (from my dear uncle) it takes some of the burden off my hubby.

4. I also am blessed to have your friendship, we have a lot in common, health goals, family worries, and I too have become a homebody, maybe this no workout rule is the push I need to get out and get some sun. How about you? Do you go to the library? It's been so long since I've been in one, I think I will start going this summer.

Let's continue with positive questions:
The person above me is most happy when she _____?

I can understand the rationale of letting your neck heal, so I would rule out anything that resembles strength training, but I would think just walking and posture exercises would be beneficial (I know I have printed off "Posture" exercises from SP , not quite sure at the moment what they entailed...) Well, dear one, we know this was not going to be an easy task, and right now I'm not finding life itself to be an easy task. but I'm not letting myself go there today, and your newest question is helpful in that.

Things that are positive in my life right now:
1- For the first time in a long time, I felt like singing in church yesterday. And without crying.

2 - Our oldest grandson had an interview for a program that would pay everything for two years of schooling, a lot of hands-on training, and an assurance of a job in a specific two-county region if he is accepted into the program. And he came home from it excited about the program, and feeling that he had done well with the interview. So hopefully he will be moving on in the application/interview process. (In contrast to his brother who just had his post high school plans come crashing down around him )

3 - I'm making some very positive progress in getting some decluttering done in this house, particularly in my over-full "Ebay" room and attic. It's hard packing it up, but once out-of-sight, it will be out-of-mind! (previous experience tells me that) And the thought of having some freedom of space just thrills me!

4 - A friendship with a special person whose first name is Julia. She is so faithful and so encouraging to me. She is a beautiful person. I hope she knows how much her friendship means to me.

And BTW, I don't have a bucket list either other than wanting to fly in a plane at least once in my life, and I don't think that is going to happen, I'm getting to be more of a homebody all the time, almost to the point of becoming "reclusive" - which I don't see as a good thing, but my DH is a go-nowhere , do-nothing-except-work kind of person, so since his retirement, it's become harder for me to get out and do things just for the pleasure of it. I miss that, and I don't think it is good for me. Add to that this "quasi-depression" over my son's situation I've had these past months has not helped any. But it's good to be encouraged to look for the positives in my life - even if it has nothing to do with a "bucket list"! (Thank you for the question, dear one, I needed it!), and I know I am blessed abundantly in so many ways and areas of my life.

And so it is a wonderful question to pass back to you: What 3 or more things can the person above me list, that is positive in her life right now?

I can relate to your weight loss struggles, my friend. I'm sorry you're going through so much worry over your dear son. All I can say is, don't be so hard on yourself, what advice would you give a friend who's going through the same emotions you're going through? Take that advice to heart and give yourself some time without the pressure of weight loss for now.

I'm trying to do the same. I've only had two physical therapy sessions so far, I haven't noticed any changes yet. The thing is, he told me "not" to workout, because I need to heal my neck issues first, but I worry what this lack of exercise will do to the rest of my body? emoticon

I can't wait for better weather to go outside and walk. We recently had a snowstorm and there might be another on the way next week, so I'm stuck at home. Patience, I need to practice patience!

I'm embarrassed to admit, I don't have a bucket list, I can't think of anything besides getting my life back right now. It's hard not to get depressed over my disabilities right now. emoticon

On a positive note: What 3 or more things can the person above me list, that is positive in their lives right now?

I'm ashamed to even answer this, that's probably why it has taken me so long to do so. I have been so emotionally tied up with my son and this divorce-in-process and the way he is [not] dealing with it, that I'm afraid that health-and-fitness wise, I am doing every wrong thing there is to do. I have gotten back to drinking a lot more water each day, and that does do a lot for me, so I guess I will claim that as my small change. Plenty of H2O helps with getting rid of the fluid retention (= weight loss on the scale!!) and it helps my joints and digestion.

I had a beginning spurt there in February and actually thought I was getting some good habits instilled, but give me a bad / emotional weekend, and I immediately go right back to where I was. And I feel like I am right back there at the starting point again. So if there is any encouragement to be found in knowing that you are doing much better than I am on this journey, then BE ENCOURAGED!! I look to you as my part of my motivation, but then just feel ashamed when I don't live up to my own challenges. And I don't have the health issues that you do. So that you are keeping on - even if it feels like you're having your own setbacks and not seeing the changes you want, they are happening, and I think you are doing very very well with your discipline and consistency, and those changes will soon be visible to you. Do you feel you're making any progress with the neck therapy and the osteoporosis? So glad your son is "on your team"!!

Does the person above me have something in her "bucket list" of things she'd like to do at least once in her lifetime that she WILL DO this year? (This site need to give us the ability to use italicized lettering!!)

I want to see changes so badly, my friend, but it is so hard for me to stay inspired when there is so much going on with me physically. Not only am I dealing with the osteoporosis, but now physical therapy for my neck. On a positive note, I haven't drank soda since New Year's Eve, I have cut down on caffeine and I'm discovering veggies I've never eaten or haven't in years. Besides the Kale, I bought collard greens, both fresh and canned, I like it better than the kale, lol! I do walk outdoors or do a Walk Away the Pounds workout everyday. Those are my improvements so far. The weight refuses to come off though, that hasn't changed. My evening snacking continues to be a problem. It's more about trying to feed my emotions.

What small changes has the person above made so far this year?

No, I do not have a good support person in my life. I have people that I talk to about my weight and my fitness, but they are all of the type that give me reasons to accept everything as is, or encourage me to drop the rules and just enjoy life (and eating!) Though I know they are just try to help me accept myself as I am, I don't want to accept myself where I'm at. In a sense, I guess my son is a support person in an indirect way, as he is very conscious of everything he eats, and is extremely disciplined with fitness - he could serve as a military "poster child". So when I've been around him, I always feel a new sense of "I can do this" if I just stay disciplined. Also the desire to have him be proud of me is a motivation. And it is encouraging in that he at least takes me a bit more seriously than anyone else, although he just shakes his head at me for a lot of things I do (or don't), and that is discouraging to me.

I know the person above me has been earnestly working at making changes. I'm hoping she can tell me that she is seeing changes and feeling the difference. Can she?

My dear son is my support person, we talk about diet and fitness (he's struggling too) and weight. However, I don't share my feelings and concerns with him, he worries too much about me. He's been like that since he was 16 and lost all three grandparents within months of each other.
I get lonely and depressed a lot, but I don't have anyone close to me to confide in. These are the times I miss my mom so much! My dear husband has too much going on for me to burden him with more worries. So I write in my journal and I come to sparkpeople to see how my sparkfriends are doing. emoticon

Same question for you, Kathy, if you don't mind...

Does the person above me have a good support person in their life (outside of SP)?

I'm with you Julia, my goal has been to lose consistently 1/2 pound per week. Sounds so simple, I'm finding even that very difficult to do. I was down to my projected weight at Valentine's Day, and was feeling proud, but am now back up about three pounds. Seems to be my on-going story. Year in and year out... emoticon

My spring goal is to lose 5 pounds and keep it off by the first day of summer. Sounds easy enough but I haven't been able to do this in over a year. So I'm going to take it, 5 pounds at a time.
Also, to earn 10,000 steps a day. This will push me to stay active.
I also need to clean out two closets.

Kathy, I like your goals! I also have to establish a more consistent cleaning schedule and spend less time on my computer and phone!

Does the person above me have any goals for the spring? (Health or otherwise)

I love the colorful, sunny days of spring, but I also get asthma and allergies. I have to avoid walking around the park in the beginning of this beautiful season. emoticon

Oh Vicky, that does sound miserable! We get pollen here too, but it doesn't really bother me physically -- but I don't think ours is anything like what you are describing. At least you have the joy of celebrating Easter!!

Julia, your favorite part of spring is...??

I hate to say it, but I hate Spring, except for Easter. Maybe it's ok somewhere without so much pollen, but already, I can't even sit outside, work in the yard, or even go for a short walk without getting the pollen in my lungs. Then it's a constant coughing and sneezing and blowing. For me, there is nothing nice about Spring here in Jacksonville. Even when it rains, the pollen only gathers and never dissipates. Just today, I went out to rinse a teapot and the pollen was so bad, I had to change my clothes when I came back in! It's EVERYWHERE!! So, there is nothing I like about Spring. :(

I'll wait until Julia answers, then one of us will ask a new question. :(

I can't divide it into one word, but it's the combination of warmer temperatures, longer days, and the greening of the world around me broken up with the splashes of color from the blossoms and flowers bursting forth in their joy that winter is over!! (Can I add that I am soo-oo--oo-o ready for spring, I have definitely had the winter doldrums, bordering on true depression.)

No new question from me until both Julia and Vicky give their answer to "What is your favorite thing about spring?"

I love your vacation, too, Kathy!!

I would prefer walking through the mountains on an open path, but since I live in 90+ degree weather emoticon I try to walk either early, late or in the house. I just can't take the heat anymore, so it's hard. We don't have a mall near so that isn't an option. emoticon

Kathy, your dream vacation sound like paradise to me! I would love that too!

I don't have a country road, although I would love it, so I will say, the mall when it's cold outside, and the park when it's warm out!

How about you, Vicki? Same question!

The person above me prefers to walk (where)? (example: country road, on the beach, city sidewalk, in a mall or on a track, on a treadmill, etc.)

The perfect vacation... Since it's a vacation, I guess I'd choose the ocean (although any destination would work as long as I didn't have to cook for a week). I'll go with the ocean for this dream, not that I'm a water person, but I love the ocean. I would be alone much of the time (since I'm married to a man that just doesn't get the idea of romance at all =), and no one else's schedules to have to work around. I would walk and walk and walk on the beach in the early mornings, the hot afternoon, and in the pre-dusk evenings (but not at night - I'd be afraid then, although of course, it would be safe). I'd love watching for dolphins, looking for seashells, walking on the edge of the surf - I wouldn't actually go very far into the water itself - mid-thigh at the deepest. I wouldn't want to have any set-in-stone schedule except for one or two days that something special (like an outdoor theater show, or a sightseeing tour of nearby historic sites) had been planned. There would have to be one touristy shopping trip to find a perfect souvenir of the trip, probably a shell bracelet or something of that sort. The rest of the time, I would want to just enjoy the ocean where I would sense God's presence and His show of might and magnificence through the vastness of the ocean itself (that's what the walks are all about). There would be long relaxing steamy showers and numerous naps. I would want to have a wonderful big book along that was well-written and wholesome, nothing tempting me to compromise my morals. And I would want to have a jigsaw puzzle along that would take the whole week to complete. Food - not important, lots of fresh salads and fruit, quick sandwiches, but I guess if I'm at the ocean I should have at least one good shrimp dinner. Good television reception with some good movies would be nice. There would be no news, no sports channels, no trashy shows, no news-talk radio for a whole week. And I think the computer should stay home. Candles in the evenings. Calm and tranquility would reign supreme. And by the end of that time, I would hardly be able to wait to leave to go home!. Yeah, that's my dream vacation: To get away from life for awhile, to relax and unwind, and to be ready to get back home again and back to real life and the real people in my life!!

I have two, one for where I actually live and one for where I wish I lived. LOL

My description of the perfect winter day in Florida (where I live) is hard to come by since we don't have but a couple of days. It is when the temps get down in the 30's and 40's, warming myself with a cup of coffee, going out to anywhere so I can wear my coat, boots and a hat! I love the cold weather more than anything!

My description for where I wish I lived (in the mountains where there is winter!) would be a beautiful snow on the ground, a fire in the fireplace, a good book, and then going out to play in the snow and build a snowman! My dream come true. (I lived in Kentucky and loved the mountains, the cold weather, the snow, and family.)

The person-above-me's idea of the best vacation you could have. (Be candid and have a great time!)

I would say my description of the perfect winter day is...an audiobook thriller, a cup of coffee or cocoa, relaxing on my favorite recliner chair, a warm cozy home and not having to go outside for anything, especially shoveling.

Same question:

Truthfully, I "hole up" in the winter!! // Realistic activity, instead of playing in the snow, I do like shoveling snow. Not exactly a favorite activity, more work-inspired, but I do enjoy it and how it makes me feel. // Passively, I enjoy reading and watching movies that I don't have time for in the busy summer months, and I love going to our grandson's wrestling matches.

The person-above-me's description of the perfect winter day would read....???

My "go to" place is Gatlinburg, TN. I wish I lived there, but it wasn't in the cards. It's my peace, my friends, my town, my mountains, and it does what no other place on earth can do to my mind. On the home front side of the question, I go to my "Music Room" and either read my Bible, play my guitar and sing or write a song, or play my piano. Sometimes I just listen to music, but that's my place when I need to escape!

The person above me: During the winter season, what is your favorite activity? I realize some of us don't have winter, but what "would be" your favorite if you did? :)

When I need to get away, I go out walking. If it's too cold, I go to the mall or even the supermarket to take my mind off whatever is bothering me. I don't always buy something, just getting out helps so much. Walking is therapeutic.

I'll post the same question to give Vicki a chance to respond. :)

On the short-term end of that question, I escape here to my room where I have my computer, and just escape into this world of friends that I love, but will probably never actually meet in person. In an intermediate range, I drive to a state park that is only 20 minutes away, and walk around the lake there, but I really don't even do that very often. And - even just driving away from the house works, even if it is just to get groceries, we live far enough away that I never do that in less than three hours, I usually stretch it out to about 6-7 hours I just walk through stores... seldom buy much. On a long-range, I'd love to go to an ocean and walk on the beach, but that one is just a mental escape. (My husband will never go to the ocean again and even if it was in the plans, it would no longer be an "escape" at that point! =)

That was in interesting question, so will send it back to you:
The person above me: Do you have a favorite place to go when you have just had enough? Either when you're just upset or just need to get away.

No. I've never liked Florida and have been here 50 years now, but my hubby's job was here and he would never move. Now I feel stuck.I am a mountain, winter person and this heat is horrible for me. I hate summers with a passion! LOL I love the forest, the mountains, the hills, the cool weather, snow, the seasons, the beauty of the open spaces, and so much more. Here, you have one season with maybe a week of cool/cold weather, and heat in the 90's + with heat indexes over 120. Not for me. :( But I've made the best of it, and God's been very good to us, so I can't complain (even though I do! HA).

I love where I live! SW Pennsylvania, we get the best of every season, the scenery is that of tranquil beauty. Our home was my grandparents' - this is where they settled when they came to this country and eeked out a living by farming (with horses and handtools). Our home has been modernized of course - I do prefer electricity and indoor plumbing- and computers, but we still have many of the original furnishings and our style of decorating has not deviated much at all from the original - lots of wallpaper yet over the old horsehair-plastered walls, the same old wooden wainscoting, the same build-in dish cabinet and coat storage that my grandfather built, we still have their old cookstove in our kitchen. We still do the country living thing too: gardening, canning, butchering, raising our own animals. (We used to do maple syrup and honey.) I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Same question back to you, Vicki and Julie!! Are you happy where you live?

We used to go out with family/friends and play card games, then my husband no longer wanted to go anywhere so we just stayed up and gave each other a little kiss at midnight, and then he wanted to just go to bed at his regular time and I would watch a movie til midnight - and this year, well, I just went to bed at my regular time too. This doesn't seem like a good trend to me...

A week into January - how is the person above me doing with her New Year's resolutions??

My new year resolution is to put the focus back on my health and not necessarily on weight loss alone. Take my vitamins, make healthier food choices and start working out again at my own pace. I've been dealing with some physical setbacks and I may need physical therapy, I will talk to my doctor on my next appt about an MRI.

The person above me's focus for 2018 is ___.

Sounds like that was an amazing trip!! I've been to Canada for a short-term missions trip working with some of the Indians, that is the extent of my travel outside of the US.

And no, I've never performed on stage, unless fifth-grade plays count or a church play that went with a cantata count. I will say, that it is something that I always thought I'd enjoy doing.

What is one thing that the person above me wants to change in her life in 2018?

Yes, I have been to Europe. I had the priviledge of going with my daughter with her Jazz band to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. She played tenor sax (she played MY sax that I played in grade/high school!!) and we visited France, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, and Italy. It was a fun trip, but I prefer our country over Europe anytime!

Has the person above me ever performed on stage?

Springtime, because of the bursting-forth of new life, and with longer days and warmer temps and new blooms every week, I feel like a new person myself. (If you take the inverse of that, you can figure out that late fall and winter are my worst times. (Plus I love Easter and what we celebrate!!)

Has the person above me ever traveled outside of the United States? emoticon

My favorite is ice skating, but no, I've never been able to skate! Like LUV, I love to watch the ice skating in the Olympics and can't wait for the competitions during the winter months!

The person above me: What is your favorite time of year and why?

I love watching the ice skaters gracefully dance in the Olympics! I always wanted to learn how to ice skate but the opportunity never arose.

I'd like to ask the same question...

The person above me: What is your favorite winter sport and do you participate in it or just watch/enjoy it on TV?

Of course---it's Vicki. And yes, I still want that recipe. Thank you! Enjoy your day out!!

The one thing that I always do just for me each Christmas Season is decorate each room. I was raised in a house where each and every room was decorated (my Daddy loved doing this), and I guess I just enjoyed it so much that I kept it in my heart.

Thank you for that, Lakotalady (Can you give us a first name to use? Forgive me if I am out of place in asking you to do that.) And I forgot to ask a question on that last post of mine! So I will do that first:

The one thing that the person above me always does just for herself each Christmas (or Christmas season) is _______.

And now to answer your question partially: The only candy I make anymore is peanut brittle. And on Thursday I will give you that recipe if you still want it! (I'm treating myself to a day out tomorrow!! All by myself, and all day!! )

emoticon emoticon emoticon We always do our family's Christmas (DH and myself, three daughters and their husbands, my son, and eleven grandchildren) on an off-day, which will be this Saturday. Then on Christmas Day, my husband and I go to his parents' home and spend the day. Truth here: I'm glad to be able to do it, they are now 86 and 91, and she always goes to a lot of work though we don't want her too, but to me it seems to be a day that seemingly lasts for 30 hours! We usually sit in front of a television watching either football or the weather channel, or an old western - nothing Christmasy. I end up fighting to stay awake, and I hate that, I know that our being there means a lot to them, and so I go and try to not complain (well, I'm complaining now, but I try to be cheerful and not complain to my husband. I tell myself that it is a Christmas gift of time. emoticon emoticon emoticon

My apprehensions concerning the Christmas weekend is that my daughter will not be here with me. I miss her so much during this time of year, and I always get a little out of sorts.

Is the person above me going anywhere special for Christmas/Holiday? If so, are you happy about it?

In my dreams, I am a musical person. In my dreams, I am a beautiful soprano. In my dreams, I am a pianist. In reality, I sing, but not well; I play the piano, but very poorly. And so I continue dreaming.

Does the person above me have any apprehensions concerning the Christmas weekend ahead of us?

We would do it all over again!!

Kathy, you were such a rebel! LOL! It does sound like it was a lot of fun!

The best and most memorable date was with my future husband at the time, and we went to Madison Square Garden to watch Jimmy Buffett perform. That was the only concert I've ever been to.

The person above me went to ___, on her honeymoon (or first vacation).

We (no, not my husband) went to a mall, and first went into a jewelry store, pretending we were getting engaged and I "picked out" my engagement ring, got a card with the price, etc. It was a plain band with a marquis-shaped diamond - very very pretty. We didn't go the final step of "ordering it"! We had so much fun doing that that we decided to go to a furniture store, and told our salesman that instead of having a large wedding our parents were giving us money for furniture instead. So we picked out about $3000 worth of furniture - all written down on a salescard of course - , we argued a bit, I pleaded a bit, gave in on some pieces , some pieces we automatically both loved, etc. We said we needed to get our parents' final approval before purchasing. /// I would probably disown my daughters if they told me they did something like that, but it was one very fun date!!

Same question back to the person above me... What are your memories of your best date ever??

There isn't any particular Christmas book I can think of. I do have a favorite Christmas song which reminds me of my childhood, Burl Ives' Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. No matter what mood I may be in, this song cheers me up and makes me sing along.

Regarding The Moon Landing in 1969:
Where was the person above me? (And with whom was she with?)

emoticon Your New Year's Eve plans sounds about as exciting as my own. I usually watch a movie until midnight, then go to bed, where my DH will be happily snoring away, having gone to bed about two hours earlier.

And as to Christmas clothing, I gave a red sweater vest that had snowflakes and edging sewn on it with silver sparkling thread. It was kind of pretty actually, but in my purging of my closets this fall, it went in a box to Goodwill. My reasoning was that items that I only wore for two weeks in the winter just didn't make the cut. So now all I have left is a turtleneck top with little ivy leaves all over it - and it's so old I just wear it around the house for "everyday". . I even had two red sweaters and I got rid of them too, now that I think about it!! I was feeling good about getting rid of things from my closet, but I do know that as I was choosing what to wear to church last week, that I realized I had NOTHING that looks very Christmasy anymore. Where is the balance point in all this? I don't think I've found it yet!

Does the person above me have a favorite book that she reads each Christmas season or a story that she always reads to a grandchild, or becomes a child again herself as she hears it read?

New Year's Eve tradition or plans are to stay home, watch the ball drop, and wake my hubby for a kiss, then answer my daughter's call (she ALWAYS calls from where she is.)

I've baked some Pumpkin and Banana Bread, and will do my Rum Cake later next week. I usually freeze the breads and the Rum Cake sits for a week, but if we want some of the breads, we eat them! As far as cookies and pies, we eat as I make. This year, I won't be making as much as usual, unless my leg gets a lot better.

Justice of the Peace: As my future husband and I were planning our wedding, family members on both sides started putting their 2 cents in on who we should invite. Family and financial stress started overwhelming us, so I suggested that we elope, we were in our thirties after all. He agreed, so that's what we did on June 30, 1995. My husband's best friend was the only one who knew and served as a witness. No regrets whatsoever!

I was fifteen, my sister talked my parents into allowing me to go, as the rule was no dating before 16. But I was allowed to go and I remember wearing a pink skirt, and a "shell" top, we went to a movie - I have no recall of what it was..., he pulled off along the side of the road when taking me home, and kissed me!! I don't know what I was expecting, but that wasn't it!! I was pretty overwhelmed by the whole thing!!! Kind of wish even now that my parents would have held firm to the 16 rule.

What kind of wedding did the person above me have? ( large or small, church wedding or outdoors or justice of the peace, # of attendants, etc)

The person above me's favorite memory as a teenager.

My mom and I went to Puerto Rico when I was 14, that was the first time I met my grandfather. I have heard so much about him, good and bad, lol! He looked at me and said that I looked exactly like my paternal grandmother who I was named after. My parents family knew each other.

Does the person above me remember her very first day of school? (Kindergarten or First Grade)

My favorite Bible verse: Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31. (As a teenager, I read this verse at my Mamaw's house, and even though I was not a Christian, I felt that it was "all mine." It touched me and has stayed with me all these years.)

Both of you have wonderful accomplishments! I so enjoy finding out more about my SparkFriends! I wish I could meet both of you!!

My greatest accomplishment, big or small: I wold love to answer this by saying that it was a weight loss goal met, but that has yet to happen. So I will go more external in my answer: I planned and directed Christmas plays at our church for three different years, and the results were tremendous. I just felt I helped the actors achieve self-confidence, and a desire to do their best, and brought out in them more than they realized they had; the props and backgrounds, the lighting, the stage crew, all were "just right" You get the idea. It was something totally new for me to do , and I was not quite sure I could live up to my own expectations - but I did, and I still have that sense of pride when I look back on those productions.

And I'm so proud of you Julia; it takes great resolve and strength of character for a person to break free of an addiction like that, and then to maintain it.

The person above me cites _____ as her favorite Bible verse. (assuming my two buddies are the only ones answering these questions, and I've recognized their faith...)

My greatest accomplishment so far, is sticking to my sobriety commitment. My last drink was on July 23, 2000. I celebrate my sobriety every July 24th. I never "ever" thought I would be able to quit drinking after 30 years. I started drinking at the age of 13. emoticon

The person above me's idea of happiness.

Peace of mind! When my husband and son are home, I feel happy. I'm constantly worrying about them out there. My husband driving to work in the wee hours of the morning, and my son commuting via subway. Also, when I'm motivated and doing well with my diet and fitness goals.
Speaking of peace of mind...

I'm going to jump in and give my answer to the favorite ornament question too! My favorite is a sparkly cardinal that I bought in memory of my mom, She loved cardinals, and though I have different combinations of color each year each year and read isn't among them always, I always put the cardinal on the tree, even if it is hidden deep within the branches. It's become a fun thing for the grandkids to find it each year! And it's always just a tender moment when decorating the tree and yes, i get a little teary-eyed each year as I unwrap it. I can hear her saying, "Oh look at that pretty cardinal!"

And then I also have a little soldier ornament that I only put on the years that our son is not able to make it home, praying that somehow he knows how much he is in our hearts even when he can't be there. . So it is the ornament that I am always relieved NOT to have to put on the tree.

(Oh, how I would love to visit Israel. Just to see where my Jesus walked would be a dream come true on earth.)

I really have two...One of my favorite ornament(s) are two Gingerbread Paper Mache People. They were my hubby's and my "first Christmas together" ornaments. They're the first two we ever put on our little tree, and they mean as much today as they did on that first little tree 50 years ago. :)
My second is a group of eight Sparkly Bells that were my Mama's when she and Daddy were first married. Imagine how old they are, and I've protected them like they were gold. :)

That would be an amazing trip. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it, sounds like a very emotional experience.

My favorite ornament is not even an ornament, it's my mom's keyring angel, I've been hanging it on our tree ever since she passed away. Mom believed that we all have a guardian angel. emoticon :(

I'd like to ask the same question:
The person above me's favorite tree ornament is _______ (and tell us why it is special to you)

well. we don't go on vacation -- so I will answer this with what I would love to do if ever I had the chance: I'd love to go on one of the tours of Israel offered by various ministries. To walk where Jesus walked, can you imagine? I've heard of others that have taken these trips, and they return with an awe-filled report. I think it would be amazing.

Plans for Christmas Day.

We usually relax, eat leftovers, call family members, and look at our gifts. Like I said, we relax. :)

Favorite memory as a child during the Holidays?
I would have to say, visiting my grandmother and uncle and helping decorate the tree. I remember how great it smelled in the house, dinner cooking, and the pine scent of the tree. Such great memories.

OMG! Cinnamon rolls! I love those!

My favorite is, and always will be I think, "It's a Wonderful Life". I have others I like, but this is a must each season!

I used to hang the stockings when my son was a little boy, I should start doing it again, like you said, for old time sake!

I've never tasted fruitcake, but I don't think I'd like it. Have you?

It is a beautiful song, (and prayer) I have never heard it before. We need to play it all over the world. I don't do Black Friday either, my son does with a few of his friends, I wish he didn't go to the mall when it's that crowded. I do my Christmas shopping online too, starting on Cyber Monday.

I start playing Christmas songs when we decorate the tree, usually sometime during the first week of December.

Does the person above me hang Christmas Stockings?

Try just putting Welcome to Our World - Chris Rice into the Youtube search bar. I'm sure you've heard it.

Christmas shopping: Right after Thanksgiving, but I do not do Black Friday. Most things I will order online. Find that I can focus on the real meaning of Christmas that way. Too much commercialism out there for me these days.

So, when does the person above me start listening to Christmas music?? (I am right now!!)

Kathy, I copied and paste the youtube link, but it just took me to the "Recommended" section page. emoticon

I start decorating our home for Christmas on the first week of December. However, for the tree, I have to wait until the boys are both home to help decorate it. That's our tradition. I decorate everything else, lol!

The person above me starts her Christmas shopping...When?

Chris Rice's song "Welcome to Our World" --- IF I HAVE TO PICK JUST ONE!!! I love so many of the Christmas songs, whether carols, traditional or contemporary - although I get annoyed when artists take a beautiful song and try to change it to make it "their style".

When will the person above me decorate for Christmas?
