Today I learned that squamous cell skin cancer can metastasize by reading a Health A-Z article to get points. I have had a lot of skin cancers, usually basal cell. I just think of them as more or less harmless, so I don't prioritize calling the dermatologist. I know I have a couple right now and I am going to call the Dr. TODAY!

walked to cancer in a fumd raiser today - it was so hot and humid. I drank plenty of water but realized its better to do your walking on a day that at least has some kind of breeze and is not blistering hot.

I learned today that i can once again enjoy hiking, with a light pack, in the heat (80 - 90 degrees and humid), as long as I have beautiful nature to look at and lots of water and a little trail mix! emoticon

DH and I went out to the Kansa Nature Preserve today. So glad I went.

Today I learned that I have to buy an ice cream that i dont like. this way I take one spoonful when company is here and thats it.

Right now I have my favorite ice cream flavor left in my refrig from Mothers Day. I am eating a bowl full everyday.

Next time I am buying a flavor I dont like.

Today I learned that it feels okay to wait for successes. I've only lost about 7 of my 20 extra pounds but got mad because my smallest pants are still too tight. Got into a little self-hatred and then stopped myself. I can just keep working at this and slowly but surely the weight will come off. This old lady is finally growing up.

Today I learned that if you give just that little more effort you can attain a goal. I make it through an hour long spin class and was able to push through the last hill climb to be able to say I did all the hill climbs today.

Today I learned that even when I say I am going to have an 'easy' day, I still need to get out and put in some time (say 45-60 minutes) a least walking or I feel really sluggish. The good thing was I enjoyed the walk once I got started.

You all are right on target. I had to stop trying to do everything and focus on the most important which is eating the right foods, in the right portions, avoiding snacking at night and keep up with walking and exercising. I was spending more time writing down what I ate and planning my meals and reading and posting then I was enjoying my life.
When it stops being fun and becomes one more thing I have to do that takes my time then I find ways to stop doing whatever it is. Thanks for the reminders and the focus. Sandy

I learned that I have will power when it comes to eating. This evening we ate at Truett's Grill (Chick-Fil-A) and I ordered the 8 ounce rib eye steak platter. It came with a salad and a side. I switched the potato out for their carrot/raisin salad. When the meal came I ate half of the steak, half of the salad and none of the carrot/raisin salad. I took the leftovers home and will eat them for lunch tomorrow. Yea me!

I am also learning that I am spending too much time on SparkPeople and will have to cut down on my message board activity and stick more to motivational areas so I have enough time to do 100% of the nutrition and fitness tracking, as well as doing the fitness activities. I do not have enough time for all that is available on SparkPeople. I did learn something new about cooking today -- to use regular drinkable wine in cooking and NOT cooking wine because of all the sodium and other additives in cooking wine.

Today I re-learned that I can't spend as much time Sparking as I would like - so I'm trying to figure how to set priorities. One of the things that will be very helpful to me is to check in on the teams I've joined - and take advantage of all the good advice, helpful hints, and words of encouragement that Sparkers have to offer. Truly, there is TOOOO much information available for the amount of time I have - so, just like a diet, I have to choose those things that will be best for me.

Hi All! I've just read all of your posts and loved them all. Thank goodness for all of you.

I've learned today that even after taking a 4-day weekend with no time to keep up on Spark, and with very little progress after a solid month of really serious effort, I couldn't wait to come back! I've entered all of my meals and exercise for the past 5 days and feel back on track.

I think I've made these pages a habit. That has to be a good thing. Thanks for all the inspiration.

Today I learned that in order to loose this weight I have to be accountable to me!! Using Sparkpeople is a great way to do that. I also learned that we are all in this together- we all want to loose up to 20 pounds!! It makes me feel better to know that we all have the same goals!

I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in a year. Finally! After finding Spark and following my Nutrition Tracker successfully for a week, I was inspired with an "I can do it" attitude. I did three sets on eight machines and then walked a mile on the treadmill. I really believe I am on track to meet my goals. What I learned is that being successful in one area can add to your confidence and really make a difference. It feels good. Whatever your challenge, focus on what's working and know you can get past the things that you think are unsurmountable.

Today I learned that Sparks has given me great ideas and support to help me watch what I eat, make me more active even if I can't visit the website as much as I want. Wow, I learned something new about myself yesterday. Or I think it was confirmed. I was in a conference all day yesterday(administrative assistants seminar).
There was a lot of information and I did gain some good points. However, I learned that in this season of my life @ 51 I am not as interested in climbing to the top as the younger girls are. I am very happy in what I do each day. What I would like to do most would be have enough money so that I could stay at home and be a homemaker again. So some of the attitudes and ideas were very overwhelming to me. I guess if I were in my 20's I would feel the same way that they do.

Today I learned that I could make delicious potato leek soup without chicken broth. I found a concentrate (semi liquid, sort of a paste) in a jar in the grocery store. The soup was enjoyed by everyone at the pot luck at church this evening.

Today I ran some errands with a good friend on mine. One of the places we stopped at was Barnes and Nobel bookstore. I didnt really have anything specific to buy so I decided to find the Spark book and sit for awhile and check it out while he searched for the books on his list.
WELL _ I can tell you that my assessment is that there is nothing in that book thats not on this website. I guess buying it support this site and keeps the revenue stream going - but I really checked it out pretty good and see nothing that would incent me to buy the book. I love SP and would make a contribution anytime= but buying a book that doesnt contain anything new or differant than whats here already is not for me.
I'd love to hear what others think about the book. Did anyone learn one new thing? What can you do new or differantly with the book that you cannot do right here on the website?

Today i learned ----------- dont judge a book by its cover. The cover is cool - the contents are nothing new.

Today I learned that Smart Balance tastes as good as butter. I was in a hurry and had to have dinner out near the theater and there was Bon Pain. I am so proud of myself; I had corn chowder soup. I had bread with it and there were these little things of SB spread. I had always thought butter was king. But not so.

My mantra got me past the brownies and other goodies that abound in that restaurant. emoticon
