Have really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on the eating triggers... we are all pretty much dealing with the same issues so learning coping strategies is invaluable. Look forward to getting to know everyone as we work through the chapters together. I bought the Kindle version so it will be easy to keep my reading going while on the road.

Ordered my book, it came in last eek - but I have yet to open it. Tonight!

Quiz results:
Stress: 7
Emotional: 7
Food Pushers: 1
Family Problems: 6
Traveling: 4
Holidays: 2
Psychological: 4
Getting Off Track: 3

Lots to work on.

I find one issue for me is feeling that I am getting too focused and obsessive about 'dieting'. I understand that I need to track to understand what I am doing and make plans to succeed - but when it takes SO MUCH TIME and THOUGHT...it makes me annoyed. Just gotta learn to get over it and do it.

I'd like to join, too.
It's very interesting to me to do the quiz. I took it some time ago, before I started therapy for binge eating, and put a sticky note with the outcomes in my book. I did it again today. I think the outcomes and the comparision to my earlier outcomes give an indication of the progress I made, and it's interesting to see that I improved in some areas, but not in all of them. I think this is related to the focus of the therapy.

My outcome today:
stress 2-3
emotional eating 7-8
pushers 2
family 5-6
eating out and travel 6
holidays 2
psychological issues trap 6
off track 8

The therapy focused most on learning to stay on a food plan, on avoiding eating over stress, and on handling holidays. My score for stress, holiday eating and for pushers was higher, before. I lost 2-3 points on the stress trap!
However, my points for the 'off track' trap and for emotional eating went UP! I wondered about that but the thing is that the food plan works well for me EXCEPT when I get very emotional or once I have started bingeing. Having to stick to a food plan may mean I feel more frustrated than before over going 'off track'....

Here are the Psychological Questions that were asked I the book. Hope this helps!

How likely are you to feel discouraged or burdened by dieting?

How likely are you to feel a sense of deprivation or unfairness when you see what other people are eating?

How likely are you to say to yourself , “No wonder I can’t lose weight— I’m unmotivated” or “I have no willpower"

Wish I could take the quiz. The ONE copy my city library has is in transit to its next borrower, who'll have it for three weeks.

But from general observation, the areas would be eating out and holidays/big social events. Some stress. Not sure what psychological is.

This group effort has already given me a big boost and helped me with motivation. Thanks everyone.

Not exactly certain how we proceed so I moved this morning past the chapter with the quiz to Foundation Strategy number one. My Advantages List has not changed substantially since I first did Beck Pink. Until today. The reading led me to thinking about joie d vivre. And then to how I get stuck in the most basic human need for physical wellbeing because of my weight and because i seek comfort in food. So I have changed my first advantage of losing weight to reflect that. I feel like a new convert to Beck again, full of energy and determination.

Onward.

Yesterday confirmed the "test" results for me with Stress and Emotional eating being at the top of my list. I had an event that was both stressful and emotional. I made it through the luncheon by being mindful, but after I got home something happened to my thinking.

I was relaxing with a good book when I found myself fighting the urge to cruise through the cupboards for something to eat. I just couldn't seem to figure out what was going on with myself that would cause this problem and eventually I gave in. Darn!

The urge was resolved with just a bit of damage and it was hours later when I finally figured out that perhaps I had not had enough calories for the day at that point. This is just one of the ways that I get trapped - could have made some healthier food choices, but I was emotionally drained and just couldn't muster the strength to make the effort. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Sorry I am late but I am in. With several sources of stress going on I may not be able to post here everyday but I will be following this thread.
I have the book, I did the quiz when I got it, then my outcome was:

getting off track 7 points,
emoitonal eating 6 points
family eating 6 points, the thing is I don't eat with family very often (thankfully for my weight).
stress eating 5
psychological 5
food pushers 3
holiday 3

If I can find the time I'll do the quiz again to see what the outcome is now.

Have to keep reply short, bad internet today.

My main trap is emotional eating. I am an angry 😠 eater. If I am mad I am eating!
The other issue is eating out. For some reason we have been eating out very often and even making good choices doesn't always mean I've stuck with my plan and goals. Note, I rarely make good choices and often am eating angry because I know we shouldn't be eating out again.

Chapter 1 - Are you Trapped?

For me, having a personal escape plan is critical. I have urges to eat when I am stressed and anxious. On the other end of the spectrum, I also want to eat and need a plan for happy occasions such as parties, traveling, eating out with friends and celebrations. I yo-yoed with my weight for YEARS because I didn't plan a strategy for dealing with these types of challenges and situations...and these situations really happen daily! I have learned a number of responses from going through Beck's Pink book challenge (twice). Staying off of alcohol, sugar, chips and nuts makes staying on plan easier. I want those foods, but they trigger something in my brain that says MORE MORE MORE and go ahead and just eat as much as you want.... you can always start again tomorrow. If I give in to that urge it will set me off on a binge... and once I have a binge episode it seems like another comes on its heels within days. Distracting myself with a game on my phone, Sparking, reading e-mails and blogs, going for a walk or run, or even making an allowed snack helps. A really simple concept that has also helped keep me consistent is a tracking page in my bullet journal. Everyday that I stay within my eating calorie range I color in a square. I really don't want to see my streak broken and the visual is a powerful motivator for me.

Emotional eating traps: I've had a hard day I deserve this...I'm feeling...and I grab something to eat.

Stress eating come right under emotional eating

Holiday's, vacations not a problem

Food pushers are a problem

I'm working on my emotional eating. Really sitting with the feeling and seeing what is driving me to food.

The quiz was an eye opener in some regards because before SP (joined Oct 2012) I would have answered 'Very likely' on most, if not all questions. Confirming that I have made some strides was reassuring.

STRESS TOTAL: 6
EMOTIONAL EATING TOTAL: 8
FOOD PUSHERS TOTAL: 1
FAMILY PROBLEMS TOTAL: 4
TRAVEL AND EATING OUT TOTAL: 0 (see note below)
HOLIDAYS TOTAL: 5
PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES TOTAL: 5
GETTING OFF TRACK TOTAL: 3

* NOTE: due to serious food, environmental and petro-chemical (includes almost all scented products) allergies, I only eat foods I purchase and prepare so this is not chalked up to being iron-willed when it comes to travel and eating out, both of which I used to do a lot of.

When reflecting upon the questions, I realized I am the food pusher at family holiday gatherings. emoticon For many years I've prepared the dessert foods my Mother and Grandmothers did for the holidays as comfort food for myself and my 4 siblings. I never insisted anyone try anything which is why I think I never considered myself to be a food pusher BUT I set them out and sent leftovers with each household. This past Christmas I was 'under the weather' and didn't fix anything (staying off a broken foot & injured knee). No one seemed disappointed and a few of the extended family members thanked me for not tempting them. There are several diabetics in the family so I am now relieving myself of the holiday dessert table! emoticon

Glad to identify what needs the most work and looking forward to honing the skills to do so!

I'm in.

Chapter 1, Are You Trapped

Emotional eating traps: - if I'm bored or lonely or stressed. Eating entertains me and seems to improve my mood. I do use certain foods as a mood regulator - mostly sweet, milky or carby foods. I do that because it seems to work.

Stress traps: if I haven't planned or prepared because I've just been too busy or overwhelmed then I end up eating whatever is available. I tend to make wrong food choices because some of these foods also help lift my mood.

Food pusher traps: this is less of an issue now a days. I'm a lot better at this than I used to be. But still when someone waves my favorite foods under my nose It's still hard to say no.

Family traps: this is hard. I do end up making separate meals for my family. Which is hard on me.

Travel and Eating out traps: I always promise myself that I will limit indulgences to a few meals on vacations. That almost never happens. I want to try out everything because i don't get a chance to do so usually. My family enjoys trying out foods. It seems like part of the experience. My last vacation i put on 5 lbs - 5 very hard fought pounds - which I still have not been able to re-lose.

Holiday traps: I look forward to some of the special holiday foods. Often because They have childhood memories associated with them. Holidays would not be the same without these foods. Around Christmas time. These "special foods" are over indulged in over several months. If i make less I feel I'm short changing my family. I lose self control when faced with these foods.

Psychological traps: - (I have no willpower, I cannot resist) not really a concern in the normal course - comes into play during holidays and vacation times.

Getting off track traps: i' ve already blown it for the day. I might as well keep eating and get back on track tomorrow.- I used to do that a lot - not so much anymore. Very occasionally. Usually because something else like boredom , stress or holidays are involved.

So in conclusion - my problem areas are :

1) special holidays - because I associate certain foods as being integral to the holidays. My family expects them. I expect them in the traditional way - full of fat and/ or sugar usually. The left overs especially cakes, pies and cookies are more of a problem than on the day itself.

2) vacations - I'm driven out of curiosity. I want to try out things I normally don't. Once I've paid for it, I'll eat till it's all finished.

3) times of stress or boredom because certain foods seem to medicate my feelings and/ or help pass the time.

4) cooking foods for my family that I cannot eat myself.

My primary trap is that I am an EMOTIONAL eater. Food is an accessible and reliable source of comfort for me. I occasionally fall into one of the other traps but this is the biggie.

This year is half over. Do you believe it! I thought I had learned some things, but apparently not as this weekend of eating proved emoticon . So I'm obviously not ready to go this alone.

I am a STRESS eater first: Friday we returned the GKs to their parents at a restaurant and, as usual when they reunite, they really acted up and I ATE UP everything I could! Saturday was an event with our motorcycle group that I had spent days preparing for and by the end of the day I was so exhausted and relieved that it was a completed success that I did a NOSE DIVE into the deserts! Yesterday, was another very long day of riding and eating with our motorcycle group as we left at 9:30 a.m. and did not return until 8:30 p.m. I was exhausted and just plain GAVE UP any thought of anything healthy for the day!

The second area I identify with is as an EMOTIONAL eater which overlaps a lot with the Stress factors I face in my life.

The third area is EATING OUT / TRAVEL. As you can see from my weekend, I do a lot of it.

Today I am "facing the music" and working at avoiding the guilt and all of the of the other negative self-talk many of us are so good at. I am feeling very grateful for this Challenge and it is great to see so many of my Beck friends here.

Good Morning Beck Blue Trekkers.

Emotional Eating traps, all varieties, are my biggest challenge. Maximum score. I thought I had this under control after reading Pink and losing a lot of weight. But I did not practice the skills during the good times. And when I got hit with emotional challenges I headed right to the ice cream. Again.

I would have said stress was my thing. But after reading the quiz I realized it is not actually stress as described in the chapter.

My BIGGEST Eating Traps:

Emotional eating: Im upset, I deserve to eat. Yes I do that.

Stress traps: I'm too busy and overwhelmed to keep on dieting. I do this when it comes to writing down my food.

Food pusher traps: dont want to disappoint people by turning down food they are offering me. Sometimes I am able to resist, but not all of the time.

Family traps: I shouldnt ask my family to make changes just because I want to lose weight. I do ask them to stop offering me food, but sometimes they forget. They are supportive.

Travel and Eating out traps: Its okay to indulge when I am away. Yes. A vacation is a vacation from diet too. Guilty.

Holiday traps: It is a special time. I should be able to eat whatever I want. Yep, I do this too.

Psychological traps: I have no willpower. I just cant resist I have weak moments when I give in.

Getting off track traps: Ive already blown it for the day. I might as well keep eating and get back on track tomorrow. I have gotten better with this but still sometimes fall into this trap.

So, now that I have identified my weaknesses, I choose to strengthen myself.

The Beck Blue Summer Reading Challenge has begun!!!! We are going to SPLASH through our summer goals!!!

Chapter 1, Are You Trapped?

The fact is, the attitude that we should be able to eat whatever you want, whatever you want is problematic and develops into unhealthy eating patterns. You know you should eat healthy, but your sabotaging thoughts leads you straight into a trap!

To learn how to plan escapes from eating traps, you need to figure out what YOUR diet traps are.

What are your BIGGEST Eating Traps, is it:
Emotional eating traps: “If I’m upset, I deserve to eat.”

Stress traps: “I’m too busy and overwhelmed to keep on dieting.”

Food pusher traps: “I can’t disappoint people by turning down food they’re offering me.”

Family traps: “I shouldn’t ask my family to make changes just because I want to lose weight.”

Travel and Eating out traps: “It’s okay to indulge when I’m away.”

Holiday traps: “It’s a special time. I should be able to eat whatever I want.”

Psychological traps: “I have no willpower. I just can’t resist.”

Getting off track traps: “I’ve already blown it for the day. I might as well keep eating and get back on track tomorrow.”

Take some time and seriously think where your traps are. Where are you struggling most? Is it Stress and Emotional Eating?
Some may not even be an issue for you while 1, 2, or even 3 areas may be your biggest struggles with falling into the sabotaging thought diet traps.

Identify and let's discuss YOUR main diet traps. Then we can build our escape plans!!

Wednesday I'll post notes for chapter 2.

I"m on another site where we are doing a year challenge with a certain protocol. Predictably, only a fraction of people have continued through the ups and downs. (But this is one of the easiest programs I've ever used.) A video weight loss coach said it's the difference between wanting to /getting excited about changing your habits and deciding to change your habits. Then again, Beck helps a lot with those backtrack thoughts.

Seven years of maintaining a 20% weightloss and counting.

I'm in!

I recently completed an individual review of Beck pink and need reinforcement for working the skills. This review started with an accountability buddy working of the book with a local person (non-SP) and lasted less than a week before buddy lost interest (our second attempt with Beck pink).

Appreciate the discussion being here as time available for SP is limited these days.

Welcome to the Beck Blue Summer Reading Challenge! We are going to make a SPLASH with meeting our goals this summer!!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thought you'd like to get a look at how the book is laid out, so I wrote out the contents.

The Beck Blue Diet Trap Solution book is divided into 5 parts and 10 chapters. We will go through one Part each week, and finish in 5 weeks.

Part One
Chapter 1: Are you Trapped
Chapter 2: Foundation Strategies to Escape Your Traps

Part Two: Internal Traps: How I Trap Myself
Chapter 3: Stress Traps
Chapter 4: Emotional Eating Traps

Part Three: Interpersonal Traps: How Others Trap Me
Chapter 5: Food Pusher Traps
Chapter 6: Family Traps

Part Four: External Traps: How Special Circumstances Trap Me
Chapter 7: Travel and Eating Out Traps
Chapter 8: Holiday Traps

Part 5: Universal Traps: How Were All Get Trapped
Chapter 9: Psychological Traps
Chapter 10: Getting Off Track Traps

Conclusion: Stay Free of Traps - For Life

This is going to be a great challenge and I hope we will discuss our sabotaging thoughts and our responses too them. It'll be very helpful to us!
emoticon VERY excited to start!!

I think it's easier to post here for our discussion otherwise it's too time consuming to go to people's blogs and harder to keep track of people.

PS, I do everything from my phone and don't always notice spelling errors, so please forgive my autocorrect, emoticon

Debbie, the Blue Book builds on what we've learned from the Pink Book. Personally, I don't think you need to buy it for this Challenge. I'd give buying it a wait-and-see, and I am looking forward to June 12th!

emoticon Hello Team!

To kick off the start of summer, there will be a Beck Blue Summer Reading Challenge! The book is titled, The Diet Trap Solution.

The challenge starts here in our discussion thread June 12th. There's just over a week to prepare yourself to participate in the Challenge. So if you'd like to get a jump start on the reading, go right ahead! It would make a livelier discussion in the Beck Blue Summer Reading Challenge!

If you do not have a book, don't despair! You can still participate as I'll be posting key concepts from the book in the Beck Blue Summer Reading Challenge discussion thread.

Please, come here and check it out as we will be discussing how to get out of emotional, stressful, familial, etc, types of diet traps and how to escape these diet traps by coming up with an escape plan!! It's Beck Pink in ACTION!!

So, I hope you see you participate in the Challenge whether or not you have the book. I'm positive there'll be something there for you that's helpful!!

We start on June 12th!
See you here!!
