Ugh! Eating healthy during a vacation is such a chore. Both fortunately and unfortunately , don't have a lot of guilt eating and indulging on vacation. Denial! But when I get home is when I get upset. We spent a week in Los Angeles last summer and walked over 10 miles a day and I still gained 5-7 lbs out there! I found the section on "Vegas-Mentality" very helpful.

Clean Up Crew members unite! : )
I'm an all-time member, I learned to manage this finally,
but my only way out is that I Don"t Touch Food on Plates of Others.
If I can resist - I'm fine, and I can enjoy my meal without cravings and mind chatter.
Just like you wrote, Becki, the plates of my grownup kids are very tempting (they often order more than what they eat), and provoke lots of sabotaging thoughts about why said food shouldn't be wasted:
-I paid for it, don't want to waste money
-it looks delicious, probably tastes better than what I had
+ I'm a reformed plate cleaner too
...
and prepare me for the future sabotaging thought "I only order a little food for myself, and I will eat what my kids left"... which is very harmful, as I will eat on impulse and will not feel satisfied because I'm "only"eating leftovers.

I had to see, my best way to handle this is ordering one healthful meal and a salad for myself, and strongly commit to Not Touch Food of Others.

-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

So this is one of my biggest struggles. I've mentioned in other areas that I live in a rural area so eating out is a treat! So remembering what I need to do to maintain my weight can be a struggle. I definitely struggle with the clean up crew. My daughter picks at her food and well "I paid for it!". The reminders from this chapter are really helpful. If I want it order it and eat half- don't pick because then I've ate mine and part of their's.

I read Chapter 6 and I enjoyed reading everyone's responses and gleaned some things from all of you. For the most part these are not my traps. I appreciated Beck's comment that "every mistake is an opportunity for learning". I used to fall prey to the "unreasonably strict trap" but not so much anymore. I've learned that too much deprivation backfires on me.

I generally do much better away from home than at home. Of course now, I will probably live to regret writing this the next time I eat out. For homework, I decided to write out an escape plan for snacking at home. After writing it out, I did not follow it very well but I did do a bit better. It was definitely in my mind as I ate more than I had allotted of nuts but I was more aware and it did help. I will keep working on this. This trap ties in to holiday traps. I know that I need a plan for the tempting holiday goodies and onslaught of food gifts beginning to come my way.

Kriszta, I don't know why buns and bread at restaurants are so enticing either! I've thought about that before. I can have bread or a bun anytime I want at home. And I rarely would have bread or a bun with my dinner at home. But when I'm out it is hard to resist. Last time I went out to lunch with my friend I ordered a large salad and it comes with a bun, so I told the waiter "no bun, please". He brought the bun anyway. sigh. But I didn't eat it. What's hard is when there is a bread basket sitting right in front of you. We have a restaurant called the Red Lobster and they always bring a basket of their very delicious, warm, cheese biscuits, and they keep refilling the basket, I think they are infused with butter...so tempting!

These are not my traps and for that very reason reading how you all have thought them through is truly enlightening. CBT in action. Kriszta I would never have come up with the rational responses that you described here. Very helpful to see how it can work. And I can apply 5his technique to my own traps.

Mine is the 24/7 Treat Trap. This comes at a good time because I have 3 Christmas lunches planned in the next 2 weeks with friends and also a Christmas lunch that the lawyer I worked for before I retired has invited me to at his golf and country club. For me, I automatically think a lunch or dinner out is a "special" occasion, but I know there are too many for me to be labelling them all "special". I also have the too restrictive trap at times....kind of one extreme to another, right? But being too restrictive ends up making me feel sorry for myself, and I might do well during the lunch or dinner, but blow it afterwards. It's important that I plan ahead for these "special" occasions, decide what my indulgence will be and work it into my meal plan. Like they say, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail". I sometimes don't have the self-control to make good choices on the spur of the moment. If I haven't planned, I have a tendency to order something because the person with me ordered it and I want it too.

It's interesting how my definition of "what I deserve" has changed, as I have progressed on my weight loss journey. I always wanted "to treat myself" to special foods, and honestly, every day was a special day to do that for me. I didn't even need an excuse. I became a wonderful sneak and thief in my own home.
What I am learning now is that I need to mentally plan on what I am going to eat, even when I am out, otherwise I am going to start just shoveling it all in. Even yesterday, we went to my daughter's house, I brought over cupcakes, I made such a big deal about my eating one... and I realize, this is MY journey, and I don't need their approval OR their disapproval. So from now on I will choose my foods without imagining that anyone is looking at my plate...
and I will also make an effort not to look at theirs. My daughter has gained quite a lot of weight this past year or two, and it's taking everything for me to shut my trap and not say one word.

We don't eat out often, and used to always order the biggest, baddest bang for the $$ thing on the menu, loaded with all the trimmings... it is fine when you can take home the extras... but what if you can't... well then I'd try to eat that too!

one time when I was pondering the pink book, I realized that...

-- we were headed out to a movie, on a hot summer night, after restaurant dinner and the leftovers would spoil... and I wanted to be able to stay awake during the movie! that is when I decided...

emoticon I am worth more than a bite of any cookie
-- and I can always get/buy/make more, if I want...

and that has helped, to this day... in a profound way... me or the cookie... it is ok to store extras or if necessary, just walk away... it's ok... the world won't end and I will have taken care of me...

-- eating out is rare, so I do now enjoy something I truly want... and enjoy a reasonable amount... in the pink book, Dr Beck suggests 25% more than usual... I'm not really sure what that is but I now enjoy a plateful instead of multiple plates or a doublesized plate, and that has helped... I don't feel deprived and I also feel empowered :)

#2: The Cleanup Crew Trap - you eat food from other people's plates.
#3: Limited Food Options Trap - you don't have control over your food while on a trip.
#4: The Vegas Mind-Set Trap - "What I eat on vacation stays on vacation"
#5: The Unreasonably Strict Eating Plan Trap.

Edited - somehow I messed up with posts, and didn't post the traps here! now I added
