I always take salad dressing with me when I go out in case salad is the only thing on the menu that I can eat. If so, I am sure to make them hold the fruit, candied nuts, etc. Also, it's a good idea to get any cheese on the side. My favorite dressing is this Cesar ( recipes.sparkpeople.com/reci
pe-detail.
asp?recipe=2581741
) but the French is a close second ( recipes.sparkpeople.com/reci
pe-detail.
asp?recipe=2644659
) I hope the links work.
¡Buen Provecho!

again...if you are doing mayo out, MANY mayos have sugar in them so be sure to look up nutrition info before hand for the restuarant you are going to. I rarely go out to eat, and went to texas roadhouse with my daughter this summer. i carefully went over all the nutrition info and picked out my meal beforehand. When it came, i was shocked to see the steak had some kind of coating on it..i ate one green bean and it was sweet..i called the waitress over, and she explained there are different formulas, the site has the basic info. She did take the steak back and replaced it with one without a coating. I had actually TOLD her i was keto before she took the order and asked her to let me know if anything i was ordering had sugar or flour, and since it was her mistake they didnt charge me for the replaced steak. but the green beans with bacon? had butter and sugar in them. one of the "alternate recipes". i was really unhappy....
so for me, its better that i'm poor and cant go out..LOL!!

Doing take out salads can work. But you have to be willing to speak up and ask for what will make it work for you (that usually means just the greens). That being said, my way of doing this often means I will use my own dressing. I make an olive oil/lemon juice dressing, blue cheese, and ranch. If Im going to get a salad elsewhere, I will almost always use my own dressing or I will get blue cheese. Maybe ceaser. If you need to eat salads out because eating out is going to happen (no judgement from me) it may be best to actually get the burger or chicken (no bun). My go to is a burger with cheese and mayo. BUT keep in mind serving size and not only the carb count, but keeping protein in your range as well. Eating out portions are usually quite large. You will to account for that higher protein in your other meals. I find once you've looked up nutrition info, eating out can be much easier on Keto than many other ways of eating.

I rate foods by what fraction of their weight is carbohydrates, and I generally stick to about 6% or less. I also use the nutritiondata website to look up things before shopping, or perhaps before going to a restaurant.

That said, if I google "nutritiondata ranch dressing" I find this page:
nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fats-an
d-
oils/7206/2

On that page I set the serving size to 100 grams (there is a little box on that page to do that), and read off the information, especially carbs. So 100 grams of ranch dressing has 6.7 grams of carbs, 0.7 of which are fibre, so Ranch is right on the edge. I use ranch.

Doing the same for balsamic vinaigrette, googling "nutritiondata balsamic vinaigrette" finds another page.

Here is how some of them rate:

- Caesar dressing (3.3%)
- Ranch (6.7%)
- Italian (10%)
- French dressing (16%)
- Balsamic (17%)

Or go shopping, pick up the dressings, read the nutrition labels and have a pocket calculator. Just a little information ... An ounce is about 30 grams, a ml (millilitre) is about 1 gram (it is 1 gram if it is water, and salad dressing's density is pretty close to water).

i'm just going to throw this out there..everyone has to do whats best for them. Pippa has it on the nose. most commercial salads are far higher in carbs than you would think. a panera chicken caesar is HUGE in carbs. a salad with some blueberries and strawberries just turned into a much higher carb meal...even a few is too many. i learned the hard way. thought i was being great once when i was first starting..got italian "vinaigrette" it said...ended up being balsamic (loaded with sugar) and there were seeds and hidden craisins in the salad..and i thought..oh look healthy..and it tastes so good..imagine my surprise when one small salad knocked me out of ketosis and derailed me for 2 weeks before i started losing again. just. not. worth. it.

I would suggest looking up the nutrition information online to see carb amounts before ordering a salad. I was quite surprised by Panera Bread. Even without dressing, their salads have quite a bit of carbs.

I had a take out salad last night at Target's deli area in produce, pleasantly surprised - Lettuce, grilled chicken, two round slices of some sort of goat cheese (I think), 3-4 strawberries, some blueberries (maybe like 2 tablespoons? Less than a quarter cup). No bread. Not sure what dressing packaged with it but tastes sweet, so I didn't eat much of it. If I am getting salad and have a choice in dressings, usually Ranch or Blue Cheese are low carb enough. Just have to read labels (when possible). If I am at a salad bar buffet (like at Dillons grocery store or many of the larger Kroger affiliates) I general go for the darker greens or Spinach/Spring mix, rather than iceberg.

ask for it plain. just greens, maybe PEELED cucumber. no onions, carrots, tomatos. maybe meat, if you know it doesnt have additives. i use olive oil and vinegar on my salad. most commercial dressings have sugar, but you can check ingredients.

It's a fact that I'm going to get one or two a week. Often from Chick fil a or panera.
Where is the best place to get a good Keto salad? What dressing?
Thanks,
Susie
