exactly...and for those that dont know..TINY amounts can kill a dog..and its in many things. like some peanut butter, yogurt, ice cream, etc. read EVERYTHING. i know 2 people that lost their dogs to this horrid thing. i have one small amount of xylitol in the house. its literally LOCKED UP and the ONLY thing i use it for is to make ice cream very occasionally (erythritol goes hard as a brick if frozen, xylitol doesnt) i have a flame red container for any ice cream..and huge warning x's on it so someone would always wonder if it was poison in my freezer, if i had anyone here. there is NO WAY Lucy could get to it. if i didnt live alone, i'd do without ice cream just to be safe...

Since we are talking about sugar alcohols, I just want to throw this little nugget into the mix. If you have dogs, PLEASE be careful about using xylitol in your home. That includes toothpaste and sugar free gum. Xylito is extreamly toxic to dogs.

Erythritol on the other hand appears to be quite safe for our canine friends. I would still exercise caution with all of them, but aside from some increased in thirst and urine output there doesn't appear to be any issues with erythritol.

Under the brand name Swerve I think I've seen it. Googling it with a Canadian grocery store chain in the search seems to find some hits, so there is a chance I'll be able to buy it in Canada!

Some substitute not tasting quite like the real thing (like a maple syrup with super low carbs) has NEVER stopped me.
emoticon

If it is more of a pleasure to eat, than not to eat, then I eat it. I don't think "real maple syrup tastes better", because I'm not eating real maple syrup. So I'm always open to new suggestions.

Hollys home made maple syrup:
- melted butter
- maple flavouring
- erythritol
sounds very interesting. I'll have a look into erythritol. If I've ever heard of this substance before, if I did, it certainly didn't stick in my head.

Tracy,
you kicked off this interesting discussion about sweeteners, like some sort of maple syrup.

Are you coming back?

Most walden farms products have sucralose. I can't verify that, as their own website is not very user friendly, and doesn't allow one to easily look up ingredients. But, im cautious about sucralose. Personally i'd try Holly's trick before WF products, but thats just me. I know people can successfully make space for it. Just not my cup o' tea. (also, see the post James made about it)

I saw a sugar and carb free maple syrup at a local grocery store last week. It's Walden Farms brand and I've seen it on Amazon as well. I've never tried it and have no idea if it tastes any good, but maybe that could be an option.

APPLEVEE,
this is the lowest carb "maple" syrup I can find in Canada:

E.D. Smith, no sugar "added". I do put a little on my protein powder based pancakes. But it still has carbs, but way way less than "normal" maple syrup, but still just a taste.

i live in maple country. i worked in a sugarbush for years. its one of the few things i miss on keto. that said, frankly my store brand of sugar free syrup is the best. i paid big bucks for lakanto thinking it would be good..its not. tastes like gingerbread, which i love, but i wanted maple!!

suggestion..the best i've had is my own homemade...melt some butter. use some maple flavoring. add some erythritol. its not bad. never going to be real, but its not bad...

Tracy,
Its good that you posted so much information. I had a look at the maple syrup in the recipe.

It looks like that syrup lists its sugar alcohols as fibre:
www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/l
og
-cabin-sugar-free-syrup-net-carbs-suR>gar-alcohol-listed-as-fiber-379473396

Similar to my Splenda experience. Sugar free, calorie free, but raised my blood sugar really high (I tested).
