OHANAMAMA,
all the best.

With ulcerative colitis I've had a number of colonoscopies in the past, and polyps removed a few times. Relax.

So, I've not been tracking much lately. I did have the colonoscopy Monday, she found and removed 3 polyps. I go see her on the 26th, hopefully to hear good news about everything being benign. Meanwhile, I'm keto-ing on... and if there are any cancer cells, may they starve to death in the absence of sugar.

My wife's simple idea is that the body is looking for nutrition.

When you find something sweet, it tastes good, you swallow it, and in no time the body figures out that there was nothing worthwhile in it. But ever the eternal optimist, maybe in the next thing swallowed you will find it. If that is ice-cream, for example, you just keep eating, then all gone, and still no nutrients, well maybe in the doughnuts, ...

You can get totally stuffed and still have a body looking for nutrition.

It's crazy how it happens, I used to be able to eat constantly and never feel full, unless I was stuffed, then I felt like crap. I'm so glad those days are gone, good food and nutrition makes such a big difference.

Hmmm... calories low this day, and fat could have been higher. I should have had some cream cheese to help that out and considered it, but I just was not hungry at all.

you can always do whatever you wish! we just put the newest information we can out there. i was really disappointed when the doc that started the net carb thing rescinded. but i had stalled anyhow, and going to total got the loss moving again.

I have gone back to counting net carbs. I do understand the reasoning to count total carbs, but I did great just counting net carbs before. Lost 60 lbs, just didn't stick with it. My gut/intestinal issues have got me down and worried somewhat. I have a colonoscopy on June 11th, (routine prevention exam) and hopefully it will reveal NOTHING so I can stop worrying. Meanwhile I have upped my fiber and it does seem to be helping already. Which is why I switched to net carbs. Like yesterday, I had 32 total carbs, which isn't really all that bad, but only 10 net carbs because I got in 22 grams of fiber. To me, it was a pretty good day... Sunday I fasted because Saturday every single thing I consumed went right through me. That is miserable and I couldn't even go anywhere for fear of accidents or the dreaded public bathrooms. (TMI?)

Anyhow, I'm finding out what works for me a little at a time.

Also, I found out that the Organic Unsweetened Coconut Flakes I had in my pantry are equal in carbs and fiber. I had a half cup throughout the day.1/2 cup of those coconut flakes have 0g Net Carbs, 16 Total Carbs, 16 Fiber, 40g Fat, 4g Protein, and 440 Calories. I love the fat amount that's in it, plus all the fiber and it helps up my calories. I'll probably be having a half cup every day and see how that goes for me.

I'm still LCHF but have not checked ketones. I only have strips.

I know zip about energy drinks. I can’t have any caffeine so I’ve never looked into them!! I can look at the bottle of Powerade zero in my fridge and let you know what’s in it fro sweetener when I get home.

Just got back from the store and they didn't have powerade zero, or any sugar free sport drink at all, the only thing they had was sugar free red bull. I've never had an energy drink other than a Java Monster around Christmas last year. (It was so good mixed with Irish Cream :) Anyhow, so the red bull has 3 carbs and I opted to get it even though I can't read the ingredient list on the tiny can. I have had nearly half of it when I look it up back at work and see it's sweetened with aspartame! I avoid that, I didn't think to look what it was sweetened with, assuming splenda. Dang. Then I learned that sport drinks and energy drinks are not interchangeable. Dang again. I've never been a sport drink or energy drink fan and knew nothing about them. Oh well, another lesson, but I will say that the little red bull has made my tummy feel better a little, although I don't think I'm getting the electrolytes like with a sport drink, right? And I decided not to fast all day because I'm hungry. So I picked up some oysters in oil and pork skins for lunch.... 4 carbs total in that lunch. I need to plan a nice high fat supper... like eggs in butter with bacon and some cream cheese on the side. :)

Thank you so much!

Yesterday was a bad day, not even 1/3 of the fat I should've had, and too much protein and carbs were at 31. I had lots of veggies with fat, but just not enough... and lots of water. I'm considering fasting today. So far I've just had water... and I'm going to go get that powerade zero today, never made it to a store yesterday.

I'll be glad when I'm finally keto adapted!

anytime!! and i thought the same thing. different people go into ketosis differently, though..so why not the flu, too?i didnt get it till week 3, yet i went totally cold turkey with the carbs, etc, and thought that just being in ketosis was going to make me not have the flu. Not so..you need to be "adapted", and that can sometimes take quite some time.
I'm not one for strips or glucose monitors or all that. the strips are inaccurate. i dont like poking myself and drawing blood.and, frankly, for me, its how i feel. I didnt do this just to lose weight..i did it for the health reasons..weight loss was just a happy consequence.
(very happy..lol!!)
i know the flu symptoms vary from person to person. your body is going through withdrawel from carbs. if you are eating higher protein, its going to take longer, because your body will see an excess of protein as carbs.
some people get no symptoms. some have worse, and longer. its all up to your body...like i said i got headaches, cranky, and belly cramps.they didnt start till week 3, all hunger and cravings were gone, and i would have thought it was something else if i diddnt get relief within 5 mins of a couple sips of powerade zero. i chose that purely for ease. i'm not a dill pickle fan and even the thought of drinking straight juice was not pleasant. i didnt want to warm up chicken broth. had i known about the pink salt and water i probably would have done that...but the powerade was quick, cold, and ready...and at 50 cents for a bottle that lasted me a week, cheap.
Anyhow..if i can be of any help dont hesitate to ask!!! hope its done for you soon!

I may pick up a bottle of powerade zero this afternoon. I thought all chances of keto flu would be gone by the third week. I missed that article somewhere LOL.

btw, I appreciate all your input! You're a great help!

i didnt realize you had just started. I would say its probably partly. i had NO flu until 3 weeks in. mine was in the form of the grouchies, headache, and belly cramps. and i did do the powerade zero..a swig when i felt the headache was enough. i never went through even a bottle a week..i still keep one in the fridge in case. to me the little bit of sucralose in it was better than the huge headache. wish they made it with stevia!! I very rarely use sweetener..I dont seem to be effected by it but everything is too sweet now so I just dont.
I do drink saltwater now, too, and that seems to keep it all at bay. i do a teaspoon in a 14 oz glass of cold water morning and night. it used to gag me at first..now i dont even think about it..its like taking my morning pills.

I did have bone broth on a couple occasions as a "meal" hence those days with lower numbers. I've not even considered powerade zero due to the artificial sweetener, and not pickle juice at all, but I like pickle juice :) that's an idea.

I thought I was avoiding the keto flu because I was watching the salt, water, sleep and trying to take it slow-ish although I did cut sugar 100%. So far this is the only problem I've had and I'm not totally convinced it's due to keto, but just wondering if it could possibly be part of it.

I started keto May 1st.

Yesterday I went the route of eating more veggies (hence the higher carbs) and seeing how that worked. It seems everything has moved 'down.' Perhaps it's just something that has to run it's course and has nothing to do with keto. I've been searching online a lot and come up with gastritis, indigestion, gastroenteritis, but none of those diagnoses seem fully correct. The closest is gastritis but I'm not nauseous or throwing up or anything else.

could be..also could be something isnt agreeing with you...how long have you been doing keto? flu should be done by the end of the first month, i would think, unless you arent strict...
have you tried some chicken broth, powerade zero, or pickle juice? (i cringe on the pickle juice..just cant do it myself..lol!

I'm feeling kind of the same. It's very mild, more annoying, kind of like I've been doing crunches too much. Is this part of keto flu, maybe?

Today's numbers are all over, but I was trying another method to fix the problem. oh well... better days ahead...

it always seems high. the coach i used said dont look at anything else on the page..just the cal range. That said..i did it while i was with him, i gained for the first bit then started losing bigtime. i just feel really uncomfortable eating that much, so i backed it off. my loss slowed, but thats ok. i just dont like feeling stuffed all the time, so i'll take slower loss over that feeling..lol.

hope you are feeling better soon!!

Went to the tdee calculator and it said I need 1952 calories a day with activity level set at sedentary. That seems high to me, and the recommended weight for me is 134-138 which seems really low. My goal is 150-152. I think most days I get between 1200 and 1400 calories and I feel good about that.

TDEE is total daily energy expenditure. many experts recommend it now..its the minimum calories you need to just function, and way higher than any of us realize. for instance, mine is 2300 cals. i just cant eat that much..i feel like a whale when i do. but i used to think i couldnt eat any more than 1200 a day or i'd gain. but i gained no matter what..now i eat more and lose...my body knows i'm no longer starving it so it is getting rid of the excess. many many studies out on it..but people balk at it because of the old calories in calories out (cico) way of thinking, which has been totally disproven now.

I've been putting butter on my chicken, it is so good that way. I didn't think about adding some garlic to it, yum! (what is TDEE?)

These next two days aren't so great. I've been having some gastrointestinal problems so either not eating enough, or as in yesterday, eating a few too many carbs because I ate some plain yogurt with 5 little strawberries for breakfast hoping for help with this, it didn't help. :/ Oh well, today's a new day to get it right again.

i found it hard to get enough fat and keep my protein low and still get my calories high enough( i do the recommended TDEE, close, anyway,,mine is 2300 cals but i just cant eat that much no matter how hard i try, so i'm usually 1900-2000 cals) ..i dont drink coffee, so it had to be in the form of olive oil on salads and butter and heavy cream. i take some butter on my plate with any meat and just take a little on my fork with every bite..i thought it would be gross but i actually like it..and often i'll mix the butter with a little garlic or herbs and its quite good!

thanks Holly! I'm surprised at how hard it is to get in enough fat, I thought it would be a breeze for me. So I made myself a few fat bombs to get it up. It helped!

Thank you and I agree, more fat was needed, but I couldn't get it in... definitely a learning process. :)

I don't know how to get the fat higher without adding either carbs or protein, too. Short of eating a stick of butter LOL!

Thanks, Holly! I'm good with the calories. I really want to keep them around 1200. have a hard time losing weight at higher calorie intakes. I'm hoping as I progress through this and become keto adapted, I can consume more calories and still lose, then maintain. My goal is 152. I have a ways to go.

Hi Kathy, My net carbs were 14g, 5% of my calorie intake. which mainly came from spring mix salad and avocados.

Goals:

Found Carb Manager online 3 days ago. I entered my info and desired loss rate at 1.5 lbs per week and it set my goals as:

calories at 1239
5% Carbs (15g)
18% protein (56g )
77% fat (106g).

First two days I ate too many carbs and calories, however today was much better!

5/7/18
calories 1304
5% Carbs 14g
14% Protein 45g
81% Fat 113g
even managed 17g of fiber.

I feel this was a good day!
