When dining out, if the portions are large ask for a take out box before you start eating and divide the meal in half to eat half later. I don`t feel deprived and I save half the calories!

I have to agree with tracking-before tracking I was clueless about cheese, butter, olive oil, mayo etc adding SOOO MANY calories to my day!

How Sleep Affects Your Weight~

"One of the more interesting ideas that has been smoldering and is now gaining momentum is the appreciation of the fact that sleep and sleep disruption do remarkable things to the body -- including possibly influencing our weight," says David Rapoport, MD, associate professor and director of the Sleep Medicine Program at the New York University School of Medicine in New York City.

While doctors have long known that many hormones are affected by sleep, Rapoport says it wasn't until recently that appetite entered the picture. What brought it into focus, he says, was research on the hormones leptin and ghrelin. First, doctors say that both can influence our appetite. And studies show that production of both may be influenced by how much or how little we sleep.

In fact, have you ever experienced a sleepless night followed by a day when no matter what you ate you never felt full or satisfied? If so, then you have experienced the workings of leptin and ghrelin.

Leptin and ghrelin work in a kind of "checks and balances" system to control feelings of hunger and fullness, explains Michael Breus, PhD, a faculty member of the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine and director of The Sleep Disorders Centers of Southeastern Lung Care in Atlanta. Ghrelin, which is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates appetite, while leptin, produced in fat cells, sends a signal to the brain when you are full.

So what's the connection to sleep? "When you don't get enough sleep, it drives leptin levels down, which means you don't feel as satisfied after you eat. Lack of sleep also causes ghrelin levels to rise, which means your appetite is stimulated, so you want more food," Breus tells WebMD.

The two combined, he says, can set the stage for overeating, which in turn may lead to weight gain.

I am a true believer in #3... Enjoy What You Eat
Unless it is something with amazing health benefits I refuse to eat foods that I don`t enjoy. My calories are too few and too precious for that. Plus no one could last long on a diet eating foods they didn`t like. Luckily I love almost all veggies & fruits and I`ve found lots of ways to make tasty meals with them. emoticon

Yes, but be careful about adding too much too fast. I learned the hard way on that one, and apparently I wasn't drinking enough water because I was miserable whenever I'd use the bathroom. Talk about feeling sideways! LOL

Two things I've learned:

1. I used to believe I only had to watch out for sugar, fat, and carbs, but now I have learned that watching the sodium level is equally important. I track my sodium and it helps immensely. things like pastas, and processed foods I am trying to eat a lot less of.

2. If you stumble or fall along the way, to KEEP GOING! I have this quote on my computer that says "Saying: "Oh, I already ruined my diet by overeating today, I might as well eat more junk." is like saying "Oh, I dropped my phone on the floor, I'll just smash it until it breaks."

And yes, not eating at least before 3 hrs is a good one!

If I know that I am going to be busy on a particular day, then I cook the day before, so I plan what I am going to eat for the whole day. It makes life a lot easier.

ALWAYS HAVE PREPARED MEALS AND SNACKS AVAILABLE


I always try to have something in the fridge that I can easily just grab & eat. Soups, salads & casseroles are great.This helps me resist the temptation of going through the drive-thru for a quick bite to eat.

I know that a lot of people say cold water burns more calories because the body has to heat it up but according to ayurvedic medicine cold fluids hold on to body fat and warm fluids release body fat.
I usually just drink my water room temperature with lemon or lime or drink hot tea. Rarely do I drink it ice cold.

Just drink it however you like it . Everyone`s body responds differently to different things. The important thing is just to drink enough.

I do my best but when its cold, the water is too cold. But having said that, when I need a drink and I want to go upstairs I always take a big glass of water with me and that does get drunk. In fact I find that I want more as it is so refreshing.

EATING ON SMALLER PLATES


When I first heard this I thought it was silly. How can something so simple really help?
I dunno why but it really does help me with portion control. I`m eating less but since my plate is full I`m not feeling deprived.
