The project is to write a 1100-7500 word short story in a post-apocalyptic world. I have a 3200 word draft of a short story that takes place in an ice age, which is one theory of what will happen after a few years of global warming. I submitted the first 1000 words to my Writers Group this past weekend, but doubt they'll see the end of the story before it's due to the publisher.

I'll have to figure out how to get a few readers for the end of the story, assuming that I get a thumbs up from the Writers Group. Maybe if I don't...

MAEDIT3, NOW we're talking. There's some serious adrenaline available with a contest deadline. So you got a nice real-world deadline for the final essay. Where do you need to be on March 15th so that you'll feel confident that you'll meet the final deadline?

How about you need to have a copy in hand that has received feedback from at least X-number of editors / beta readers? That will give you 15 days to revise as necessary, and polish the heck out of the entry.

You're in a writers group, though aren't you? So maybe that's not a hard step for you.

What will simultaneously light a fire under you and reassure you that you're on track to finish?

Okay - now I get it. The 15 of every month - 11:59pm.

You're right - I don't work that way. I like to have things done WAY ahead of time. But I do have a contest I want to enter at Dark Markets, which is due on March 31. Since it's a (gasp) fiction contest, it will take a crowbar to get me to actually get this done...

So, MADEIT3, your FINAL deadline is this: by 11:59 pm, on March 15th you will have written, edited and posted FOUR blogs at your wordpress blog.

It's smart to break it down into weekly bites, but - if worse comes to worse - you could do all 4 last minute. :D

I think I know you well enough to know that's not your style, though. I'll be putting together the Writers Write Challenge I mentioned below, which is meant for the writers who pace themselves more evenly.

I have set a deadline for posting to my Blog at newgardenerblues.wordpress.com no later than Friday of every week. So far so good...

I'm a bit stumped on what to write for this week, though. So I'll be back on Wednesday to say how it's going.

Complete title:
Writers Meet Deadlines. (What's due by 11:59 pm on the the 15th?)

Some writers seem to thrive only when they have a hard deadline they must meet. If you are one of those writers, consider adopting our virtual deadline of 11:59 pm on the 15th of every month.

Simply figure out what you want to achieve in the days between NOW (the moment you are reading this) and the final minute of the upcoming 15th ... then assign that task (or set of tasks) to yourself.

To participate in this thread-based challenge, post the requirements of your "assignment" in a reply to this thread.

As we get closer to the deadline, you may come back and edit your entry to let us know how you're doing. Edit your entry when you complete a stage or have a breakthrough -- we'll be able to cheer you on. Edit your entry to offer excuses as to why you won't be able to finish -- like any good editor, we won't be able to accept them. If we don't hear from you at all, we might just send a spark mail inquiring about your progress.

When you complete the assignment, please update your post. You will either meet your self-imposed deadline or not.

If you do (and if you report your success) the team will reward you with respect ... and a special spark goodie.
