To make your mouse left handed instead of right handed: From the "start" area of your computer, Right click to bring up a menu. Then choose "control panel" from there. Then click on "Mouse". Then under "Buttons", the top one is for "button configuration". Put a "check" that "check box" to switch the "primary" and "secondary" buttons, which makes the button on the right the one you use for primary functions such as selecting and dragging.

I have played with this back and forth before. But it is much easier for me with my right as that is the way I learned it.

I bat right handed because my left eye is the dominant one and so I can judge the ball better facing that way. I think we use our right hands for the mouse even if we're left-handed because the mouse is set up for right hand use - we use the left button with our right index finger the most. If we use it as configured, we'd be using our left middle fingers the most, which isn't as natural. I didn't even know that a mouse COULD be reconfigured for use with the left hand!

The writing looks pretty good - better than mine with my dominant hand. I'm a lefty, but have always used the mouse with my right hand. Don't know how to reconfigure it to work with my left, and since the tower is on the right side of the computer, the cord won't reach over to the left side anyway.

Yes, this is not that easy. Especially with writing. I do try to switch it up once in a while because I know it is good for me. I have had injuries before on both sides that made me switch things up before.

Holding a bowl in my non-dominant hand felt truly awkward. So, I held it in my other hand to study how I actually holding it. Then, I returned it to my non-dom hand. It helped.

Because the index of my right hand on the mouse(the usual) is the left click and when I used my left hand the index finger was the right click. I forgot to reconfigure the mouse buttons.

Interesting.....

Why is it so awkward?

Less awkward today, tho. with eating and brushing teeth. Using different muscles in a different way, it seems.

I have some sewing to do today Pondering which hand to use. And if it's safe enough! LOL

emoticon I just had to report in, even tho it's still early in the day. I feel like a kid, clumsy. I have to be mindful (which is good). A bit of confusion b/c I wasn't sure which hand I do things with. I'm noticing that if something is on the left, then I use my left hand. And if something is on the right, I use my right hand. There are a few things I HAVE to do with my dominant hand.

Has anyone tried using their mouse with their other hand?

Good to hear from you MZZ!

This challenge is going to be really interesting for me because I'm left handed, yet do things with my right hand as well. So, I'm going to have to stop and think, which hand is for which task and then do the opposite. Shall be interesting to say the least. LOL

I think this is a great idea!

If you have ever compromised the function of your dominant hand or arm by injury, you will appreciate having done this. I try to mix stuff up, stuff like occasionally brushing my teeth with my non-dominant hand. Unlocking the door and opening it, with my non dom hand. In yoga, I noticed I tended to roll to one side when rising from the floor ( due to my scoliosis), now I roll to the side that's not routine. When I sculpt, I use both hands to create details.

If you want a real challenge, try cutting paper with scissors, or screwing a threaded cap on a jar with your non-dominant hand!

IMO its a good thing to try, bc it increases the connections between brain cells, and makes new connections.

Another benefit... it gives you a very small idea the frustrations that the handicapped face... or what its like to be a child again, just learning skills we as adults take for granted.

Have a fun day!

Guess my question is WHY? -- I prefer other ways of challenging my brain. emoticon

My DD participated in a 24-week program this past year to learn to get both sides of her brain to "talk" to each other.
...ie. learning the alphabet backwards; doing stick movements & alphabet forwards & backwards + letter sounds, etc. Learning to juggle. Practicing memory games w/ objects & white board. Then she learned quadrant writing: forward, backward, & upside down. She also practiced in cursive + used BOTH hands to perform the tasks.

You could bandage your dominant hand or put your dominant arm in sling (you could use a triangular bandage for a sling). You could also put your dominant hand in a pocket, behind your back, or sit on it. If washing dishes, you have to consciously choose to pick up the dish rag with the non dominant hand. There are a myriad of things to do and ways to do it.

By using your non dominant hand, you form new neural pathways. Not to mention it will come in handy if you ever have an injury to your dominant hand.
Try brushing your teeth, combing hair, washing your face, washing dishes(nothing sharp though), eating, vacuuming, ...
