In our area, both KMart & WalMart carry some organic items.

Next best thing is eliminating as much processed foods as possible. I mostly cook from scratch because my hubby has high blood pressure and the processed foods have a lot of salt in them.

Improve your diet the best way you can and live as healthy as you can. Trying is the hardest part and after a while it becomes a habit.

NO, Bird seed is NOT better. Anything made for human consumption is rated above anything made for pets and that includes the bird seed.

Just read the labels and eliminate anything that has additives.

I buy Crazy Richards Chunky Peanut Butter, which has no added salt or sugar or anything else except peanuts. I get it at Safeway.

"Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance: NICOTINE for FOOD!"

OMG that is scary! emoticon

I shop at the Weis store...have you heard of it? I don't think they have a "bulk" section. I figured the seeds would be in the aisle with the nuts & almonds, and that is where I found them...
Seeds made for humans sound scary! Maybe I need to check out the pet food aisle for bird seed? emoticon

Bird seed might be safer? lol

MSG

Seems strange that you cannot just buy seeds with stuff in it. Is there a BULK section at the store.

I heard about MSG but what is it?

The only selection in sunflower seeds are those ones or ones made by Planters...
I wonder what is in the Planters ones?

My sunflower seeds contain:
Sunflower kernels, salt, cornstarch, sugar, monosodium, glutamate, maltodoxtrin, yeast, corn syrup solids, paprika & other spices, extractives of paprika, hydrolyzen soy protein, natural flavor, garlic & onion powder...

I do have a recipe for EZEKIAL BREAD. But be warned! It's a lot of trouble to make. You have to do a bunch of SPROUTING first, then grind your own flour...

I always find the Ezekiel bread in the Frozen Food aisle/organic section (near the frozen Kashi dinners). I was even surprised when I found it in our small town Piggley Wiggley.

Basically, when you go to the grocery store, have a look at the ingredients list. The fewer the ingredients the better, but also the ingredients themselves. If you don`t know what it is, put it back on the shelf.
This is how I have ended up making so much of my own food from scratch. emoticon

I never saw that bread before and I am sure we don't have it at our grocery store. We don't have a health food store at all...
When I chose my bread, I chose it based on it being 100% whole wheat. I tried alot of other breads in that aisle, and didn't like them (Sara Lee, Weight Watchers, Arnolds, ect) and they didn't stick/I didn't like them.
I reduced the amount of potatoes I eat alot since joining Spark. My mom makes potatoes alot, but I typically don't eat them. Unless they are mashed, then the night she makes them I have a small serving but nothing after that.
I do this because the way she makes them, she never leaves the skin on...

Hmmm... when I but PB or Almond Butter, the ingredient list has one thing... peanuts or almonds. Natural ingredients like flax is great! But, I would get one that just has NO sugar.

I read the list of ingredients on the bread. Not something I would eat, nor consider clean.
It has a lot of soy (have you heard about all the GMO soy?) and other ingredients I cannot even pronounce.

This is the bread I buy. This brand:

www.foodforlife.com/

Here is the list of ingredients: And yes. There IS soy in thios bread (sprouted beans) BUT, it is from organic soybeans, not GMO.
www.foodforlife.com/procart_catalog/
in
dex.cfm?ProductID=33&do=detail

FYI, GMO (genetically modified) soy beans are `round-up ready`
Have you heard of thisÉ It means when the farmers spread weed n feed over the crops, the soybeans have been engineered to not die. So, in turn, we are eating this hybrid soy, with TERRIBLE pesticides on it also. This is not the case when you buy organic soy.
Anyhow, the Food For Life company has lots of other bread-type products. I can`t get them at the grocery store either. I have to go to the health food store.

Also, white potatoes are fairly high on the GI scale. I don`t even eat white potatoes. They are not without any nutrtion, but there are just so many MORE nutrtious foods out there. I just don`t eat anything white.

Anyhow, that`s OK to be a lurker. It`s a great team though. Members are great. Feel free to ask questions or whatever!

Thanks. I joined the team but I might just be a lurker...I am still learning :)

This is the bread we typically buy: http://www.zeer.com/Food-Products/Martins-
100-percent-Whole-Wheat-Potato-Bread/0
00069498

I have never found the Ezekial kind...but I did find this and it is whole wheat.
I am not sure what is in my pb...it has flax seeds though, and omega 3s I think...it is supposed to be healthy pb & I learned about it on SP. It is supposed to have less sugar & saturated fats (has no trans) compared to others...

Hmmm... make sure your peanut butter doesn't have anything else except peanuts in it.
WHAT is WW Potaot bread?!!! lol! I would just eat whole grain, or bvetter yet, a SPROUTED grain bread, like EZEKIAL 4:9
I drink RAW, unpasteurized milk. But that's just me. Pasteurized stuff has had the LIFE goodness heated out of it. But, raw milk can be hard to find for some...
Kashi is a good brand, but plain old oatmeal, or steel cut oats are even better.
Crackers are RARELY clean... and I don't eat a lot of cheese, except goat's or sheeps's milk cheese, or raw, organic stuff.
IU'm kinda CRUNCHY that way.

Your diet overall looks pretty good. If you are really interested in eating clean, join my team. Link is below!

ok, I wanted to see if I could improve my diet and aim for eating clean and just not calories...but now I am wondering, what can I eat? lol! And how will I meet my calories each day this way...
Like can I eat cereal? What about bread? Yogurt? Milk? hmmm...maybe it would help if I told you what I typically eat and you can help me make better swaps?

Breakfast: kashi go lean crunch, with skim milk...sometimes fruit (like a banana)

S: If I am in class I might bring a kashi granola bar...

L: If in class I will bring a pb & banana sandwich. If at home, I typically eat a tuna sandwich.
Bread=Martin's whole wheat potato bread
PB=Naturally more peanut butter

S: afternoon snacks are typically almonds & yogurt...what yogurts can I eat? I typically buy and therefore eat whatever is on sale (like yoplait) right now I am eating an organic yogurt...stonyhill or something like that.

D: dinner is typically a protein (like fish) and a veggie (like broccoli) but sometimes if I don't like what my parents are eating I microwave a microwave dinner (I know that is bad...)

S: If I have a night snack it is typically crackers w/ Laughing cow cheese...I don't think the crackers we have right now are "clean" though...

So...that is a typically day for me. What improvements could I make? What can't I eat & what can I eat?
Thanks!
