I am doing functional whole body work with HIIT cardio twice a week, focused heavy lifting twice a week, 2 active recovery days with walking and comfort yoga, and one full recovery day. Also, I walk about an hour a day (to and from work, etc.)

Eating hardcore vegan...3 meals a day - 2 snacks.

Feeling lean, strong, and lovely today!

I find my kettlebell has been one of the most fun and effective tools I've used. I recommend adding it to any strength training program.

I am doing interval training about twice a week, which for a 48-year old is pretty good!
I work out 4-5 days a week.

I'm eating five times a day:

Breakfast (550 cal.)
Morning snack (350 cal.)
Lunch (550 cal.)
Snack (300 cal.)
Dinner (550 cal.)

I am eating super clean. For my calorie amounts, I am using my BMR (basal metabolic rate) as my baseline and then eating according to my activity level (websites for these calculations are all over the web.) I have been consistently losing about a pound a week.

Doing some interval training on long days, treadmill up to a 5k (varies), weight training and then the pool.

For rest days I have been trying to learn some yoga.

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

I track every thing that passes my lips, every day, no cheating, and stay within SP's ranges. I do a ton of very varied cardio including HIIT, soccer, Turbo Jam/Fire, and ballet (I get bored easily otherwise), and started ST and functional training 2 months ago. I'm still a baby with the strength training, but I'm getting stronger every day and I LOVE IT!!

I have been measuring everything that passes my lips. It seems to be working great. I even measure how much milk I put in my coffee. That was 50 cals/day that was not accounted for!

I'm definitely going organic when possible. Out to dinner is harder to accomplish this. When I know I won't have a chance to exercise, eating less & lighter helps to maintain instead of gaining and walking to destination a few miles away helps!

What is working for me is the nutrition log here on Spark. It is my life-saver. I also like the reports to see how much I am consuming versus burning. I also really like to follow quick and simple recipes. The magazine, Clean Eating is a great tool with good recipes that are simple to follow.

Also, having someone to check in with helps me a lot. Not to mention an incentive for completing a goal, like a mini shopping spree! emoticon

Thanks for advise about back muscles, Newagotan. I've been doing lots of abs and recently included back extension exercise. Thanks for the heads up. I balance everywhere else-front of leg, back of leg and same with upper body. Just didn't consider it for back.

Just started Joey Atlas Leg Butt Thigh Hip makeover. I tend toward big legs and hips. Turns out squats and lunges with weights not so beneficial for toning and slimming. Have been doing more web research on this and turns out trainers are recommending lifting own body weight to tone legs and hips. Also bought a kettle bell (15 lbs) and working with that for aerobic upper body training. Added swimming 40 minutes 3 x weekly, and some walking most days. Lost 3 lbs this week.

I jus wanted to talk about the importance of adding back exercises whenever you work out your abs. I made an error of not practising this. Now my abs are way strong and my back hurts whenever I stand for too long. I started training my back and I am already seeing progress. Remember to always train opposing muscles! emoticon

I switched up my routine. I am still doing ST and cardio, however added heavier weights that I cannot do as many reps on, and upped the intensity of the cardio. Now I'm getting flushed and sweaty, whereas before my heart rate was only up into the target zone just a bit.

I'm also doing the Jillian Michael's 30-Day Shred. I added this as a second workout for the day to bust a plateau. It's really working. I'm down 1.5 lbs in less than a week.

I eat about 90% clean and try to do close to the 40/30/30 plan - very hard to figure all that out and very time consuming, so I mainly focus on eating clean. I just started the program "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" and LOVE it! It really just simplified my weight program and it's concepts are great - stop lifting "barbie weights" and lift like a man. :) I am sore, but in a good way! I'll keep you posted on my results! Good job ladies!

Im concentrating more on strength training. My goal is at least 30mins a day. And I also cut down my mileage from running. Its actually working. A few ppl have commented on me being more solid and one lady told me, " I'm just pure muscle". lol I'll take that lol. Now nutrtion...agggh I got to get focused on that too.

Am eating less fruit, carbs only the form of vegetables, more protein, 6 meals, strength training and cardio alternately. Finally shifted from a very long plateau. Only one pound but it is holding.

I got the weight off, toned up my muscles and found out I like them. Now I am removing those annoying bat wings, my muscles hide them well. I now want more bulk on my upper body, so my solid legs don't look so weird lol.
My calfs are 40 cms pure muscle so I now have biceps to match.. The upper body v will come with dedication, I feel good about all the work I have put in at the time even when busy with life..
I now have dedicated I don't need whey protein, it is good nutrition and daring to go heavy that has given me muscles. I feel off using suppliments, and never want to touch creatin ever again.. I tried it once was violently feeling weird all day efterwards, so not thinks.. I will smack anyone saying I am a steriod freak. I can give a clean urine sample at any gym door..

If you want to shrink your bottom - squats and lunges! Recently I have fallen in love with a SP exercise doing squats with a stability ball. It works sooo much more than just weights because it forces you to balance yourself as well.

For me I LOVE cardio...but I always get confused and disappointed when trying to add strength training---Jillian Michaels solved that problem for me I have about 7 of her DVDs (I just completed the 30 Day Shred and lost 10lbs in those 30 days...I lost alot of inches in my waist area).

When I was only doing cardio my progress was slow and very frustrating once I added Jillian Michaels my results have come immediate...it feels good to see results and if you need a boost I would try her 30 day shred...those 20min power workouts really make a difference. I added that on top of my normal cardio each day.

I try and eat high in protein, keep my fats to 40gms and not to heavy on the carbs. 60m of cardio daily and working out part of my body daily with heavier wts. I have cheat night on Friday nights with the family.

I'm trying to knock of a few more pounds, but my body fat % is steadily dropping. I'm just fine with that!

In the attempt to lean out, I eat clean and have a healthy cheat meal once a week. A healthy cheat is a burger or tacos made at home with fresh ingredients. My fiance and I are trying to eat at home to save money and to lean out. We have also been doing HIIT with cardio and I have been doing High Intensity Supersets with my strength training. I am also changing my workout and diet every six weeks to keep things interesting. The scale is slowing moving down and I am looking more toned.

Not a problem! I don't eat 100% clean, it's almost impossible (for me) to do so. But it's pretty darn close.

Ah, that makes sense; I try to do that already to some degree, but high fiber whole wheat bread sneaks in, as well as an occasional other item or two.

But great goal! I will read more about it. Thank you for taking the time to answer!

Sorry for what may be a dumb question, but what exactly does everyone mean by eating clean?

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

If you think you can't, you're right. If you think you can, you're right.

What is working the best for me is eating about 90% clean. Working out is just a huge bonus for toning!

Started HIIT and have noticed a difference in my thighs already. I'm getting skinny!! emoticon

I try to eat as clean as possible and love the clean eating cook book so I highly recomened it! I've become much better at creating a menu for the week and then only buying what is on my grocery list: I don't even go down the cracker aisle any more! I also eat lots of veggies and some fruit and incorporate protein with every meal. I do enjoy the slimfast products as a supplement to my diet and those aren't exactly clean, but, I am not about to cut everything that I enjoy!

What is working for me right now is the Eat Right 4 Your Type diet. I'm an A+ which makes me borderline vegetarian. I am allowed to have certain fish several times per week; chicken, turkey, or cornish game hen up to 3 times per week. I'm allowed to have eggs. I have to get the majority of my nutrition from fresh fruits and veggies and whole grains. Wheat is considered a toxin for me and I really do notice a difference in the way I feel since I have decided to follow this program. Certain foods are considered medicinal, certain are nourishing and a lot of foods are toxic.
I feel great!!!!!!!!!

Foodwise, I am off to the vegetarian restaurant, great whole grain choices with some beans for protein. I find that treating myself at this place is a renewing experience and makes me want to take care of myself as well as others.

Today it is bright and sunny and I am taking a day off from the gym and going for a walk at lunch time. Here in Boston, with the weather going downhill, I am taking advantage of just getting out and about. emoticon

cutting out processed foods has done wonders for me, when I take my legal extras it is usually a little extra of the core foods I miss.
neutral extras are easier for me to control, if I want the dangerous ones it is in a control amount (one peice) and always efter my evening dinner and dessert. there ain't much room to sin wildly on a full stomach...

I gradually cut my calories from 1600 down to 1350 and started eating veggies & fruit with healthy protein (chicken, fish & lean turkey) at every meal. Feeling a little lethargic so I put whole grains back into my diet today. Just increased cardio 2x a day, one hour each session, 4-5x for next week. Hopefully this will off set whole grains while allowing me to get leaner.

I train because I like to eat!

I weighed in today and I finally lost 10 lbs!! Well, 10.4 lbs to be exact!! It's been after 14 weeks of hard work, but I finally did it!! Now, the next goal, another 5 lbs. I should go and celebrate!! I couldn't have done it without your support!!

What's working for me is calorie and carb cycling, plus cardio in the morning every day in an empty stomach. Eating 5-6 meals a day, so I don't get hungry and strength training at least 3 times a week.

Lappel - I too have thought to myself, "Will this way of eating become more automatic and something I won't have to think so hard about?" I believe it will. I'm eating 5-6 small meals a day,in the same combinations as you are. I am counting my calories right now and weighing my food. Once I reach my goal weight, I'm hoping that I'll be able to relax on that a bit because I'll know, just from eyeing my food, that I'm eating the right combinations and eating the proper amounts. If we keep doing it over and over, I believe it will become a habit.

emoticon Keep up the good work!

About a month ago, I started on my own version of a "Clean Eating" diet. In response to feeling weak the day after a hard workout, I went to a nutritionist and now eat around 5-6 small meals every 2-3 hours, with my main meal in the middle of the day. All meals (except for bkfst) have protein, carbs, and raw veg. Bkfst is granola and yoghurt. I don't count calories but I'm starting to listen to my body and be more in tune to what I want to eat and most important when I'm full so to stop eating. Apart from the occasional craving of something sweet (which sometimes I satisfy with a pc of fruit and sometimes with a piece of cake(!), it's been very easy and I've lost 2% body fat. The only real challenge has been the prep work/constant thinking of what my meals will be and ensuring that I have the right foods with me. I'm hoping to get to the point where it's not such an obsession and becomes more automatic.

Yesterday I added more fat to my menu - 2 strips turkey bacon for breakfast and 1 Tblsp. olive oil at dinner time. The added fat helped to keep me fuller longer and I ended the day under my caloric allowance!

Last week I started eating a very clean diet and I'm amazed at how much better I feel. I'm realizing that refined sugar makes me grumpy and weighed down. I have much more energy.

My boss had suffered from gas really bad and it is to the point for him that it interfered with his work. After doing some research it was discovered that if you eat fatty stuff before a lot of fruit that the fruit can ferment in your gut and cause gas. I just wanted to mention that to you just in case it helps. Digestion for carbs starts in the mouth when you chew mixing it with saliva, protein and fat start to digest in the stomach. A normal meal takes 1.5 days to fully digest. My mother has the book so I can't look it up but carbs take about 30 min to pass thru your stomach, protein one hour and fats 2-3 hrs. This could get to be a long post as I could go on and on about carb choices and glycemic indexes. Just a note however, if you eat a lot of high index carbs which turn into glucose (blood sugar) your body uses this for energy however if you have more than your body needs it will store up to 350grms some in the liver and muscle tissue and the remainder into fat.

Liver glycogen is available for immediate use and your body converts it into glucose when needed. muscle glycogen does not have the enzymes to convert the glycogen it does so indirectly when it contracts creating lactic acid which is carried thru the blood stream to the liver then converted back to glycogen or glucose. A sedentary person will keep the glycogen stores for up to 15 hrs while a physically active person can burn thru them in 2-3 hrs. After a heavy workout it can take up to 48 hours to replenish the glycogen stores.

When you eat high index carbs your body responds to the spike in blood sugar by releasing insulin to quickly reduce the amount of blood sugar. Large insulin releases cause a shock to the body and irritate the nervous system. Also the insulin release pushes most of the blood sugar to your fat stores.

Question (kind of an embarrassing one): I'm increasing my fiber dramatically from what it was, but I am experiencing such painful gas that it makes it difficult to work out some days. I'm eating a mix of things: carrots, oatmeal, broccoli, etc., not too much of any one of them. I feel like the Goodyear blimp! Will this get better as my body adjusts to the change? (I've been at this new phase in my nutrition for 6 months.)

I eat a lot of lean protein and high fiber foods (fruits, veggies, whole grains). I also find eating 5 smaller meals a day helps as well.

I was fed up with being fat!! I joined SP in May 2006 and had seen some weigh lost but not very much. So I went to an acupuncturist for weight loss and also follow his raw veggies and tofu diet. It has been working great for me!! I have lost 14 pounds in 3 weeks.

Working out certainly can make you tone up nicely and isn't it great when people start to notice. Don't be afraid of the second phase because you will do just fine once you get a handle on the changes.
Good suggestion to up the fiber and also protein. Also if you want to up your protein you can cut your milk down and add cottage cheese 2%. This is a little thicker and you can warm it a few seconds in the microwave if you want. JJ Fiber binds to fats and they pass right thru your system. JJ

FITMOMSTL-
I looked at your nutrition tracker and I see two trends that may be leading you to feeling hungry so often. It seems like you tend to skip meals and it also seems that your meals are low in fiber. You may want to add in the fiber tracker to your others and see if you notice the same. Set your alarm for every 3 hours if you have to so that you can remember to eat 200-300 calories. Also, adding more protein earlier in the day like egg whites or oatmeal will help. I see that you have cereal and milk which have a good amount of protein in them but I would certainly consider a scoop of whey protein in the milk (vanilla flavored) or pop a couple of egg whites first thing. Hope this helps!!!

Well I feel fabulous! I am almost finished with week 2 of my new weight training program from M&F and WOW! I am adding weight consistantly and things are looking up! My friend told me Saturday that I look like I'm toning up, that made me feel great!!

I have one more week of Phase 1 and then I move into Phase 2. I looked it over and man it's a little scary. I am working hard in Phase 1 and I know that will translate into the next Phases!

Only thing I need to work harder on is nutrion and cardio. I am doing decent in those departments, but need to step it up! I can do it, just gotta put my best foot forward! :)

Fitmom -
I see you identified for this week to focus on "better quality meals" and I couldn't agree more. I reviewed your food log for most of the month of january, and by making better food choices, i bet you would be more content with the same amount of calories. Eating less processed foods will help tremendously! Drinking lots of water (especially with your meals) - good rule of thumb is to consume a minimum of half of your body weight in ounces of water.
Just thought i would share my thoughts! I am interested in seeing how it works out for you!

Thank you both. I have been eating several small meals throughout the day as well as the 3 main meals. It seems that I continue to go over on calories and still feel hungry. I think this week I'll concentrate on better quality meals. Most of the time I go over on calories due to prepackaged foods. My schedule is crazy with 2 jobs and a 1 yr. old, so sometimes quick is my only option. Time to sit down and figure out a grocery list that will help me stay on target. I haven't been super strict with my exercise and am worried that when I do, I will feel even hungrier throughout the day. Ugh, this balance will take a while I guess. Thanks again!!

Great picture of you & your daughter! I have been eating every 2-3 hours and small meals and that is filling me up and holding me over till a "larger" meal. And I try to eat fiber & protein at those smaller meals because they really help fill me up!
Keep up the great work!

What an adorable baby... awwww...
As far as eating are your eating only the standard three meals a day or are you eating 2 (err I meant 3)lrg and a snack? The other aspect serving sizes that you are eating compared to what is listed in the nutritional tracker? I don't know if that is helpful or not.. I can tell you that I do get twangs of hunger around my cycle more and that I keep something to have mid meal like yogurt and granola. I hope your body adjusts to the new and improved eating pattern.. JJ

OK. here's a question for long term sparkers. I am not following any specific spark diet, just keeping track of my food. I am trying to follow the calorie intake guidelines set up, but I am hungry ALL THE TIME. I'm sure I am craving the extra carb calories that I have cut back on, but when does the hunger go away? I feel like I am never satisfied. I am eating balanced meals, and a couple servings at a time, but still no satisfaction. HELP!!!

I didn't get anything that DH asked me if I wanted which doesn't surprise me at all he hasn't any memory for that type of thing. I will be placing an online order today with the gift cards I received from various family members.. woohoo One of the gifts will be the eating clean books(s)

I am seriously wanting the "Eating Clean" cookbook.. That is close to what I do right now but my plan is more organic foods so it will be interesting to see what I am doing that I could change. I better be extra good for Santa... **winks** JJ
