My son will love this day as much as he loves his dog. He has a German Shepard that is so sweet and gentle. Love her to pieces.

Today is National Dog Day! Dogs have been “man’s best friend” for over 15,000 years. We rely on our wonderful canine companions to keep us safe, bring us comfort, and love us unconditionally. National Dog Day is our opportunity to show our deep appreciation for these remarkable animals and to find homes for all of the dogs in need of a loving family.

To celebrate National Dog Day, adopt a dog from your local shelter, organize a play date for all the dogs in your neighborhood, or treat your dog to a new toy. Check out the official Dog Day website for more ideas!

National Banana Split Day

Today is National Banana Split Day! This decadent dessert has been around since the early 1900s and is the perfect treat to enjoy on a warm summer night.

The split is a variation of the traditional ice cream sundae and is usually served in a special dish called a banana boat. It’s easy to make, but you’ll need quite a few ingredients! First, split a banana and place a slice on either side of your boat. Then add three scoops of ice cream in between—one of chocolate, one of vanilla, and one of strawberry. Generously top the chocolate scoop with hot fudge, the vanilla with candied pineapple, and the strawberry with strawberry sauce. Next, swirl whipped cream over each scoop. Finish it off with a sprinkle of crushed nuts and a few maraschino cherries. Yum!

To celebrate National Banana Split Day, set up a make-your-own banana split buffet and invite your friends over for an impromptu ice cream social. Enjoy!

National Waffle Day

It’s National Waffle Day! On this day in 1869, a man named Cornelius Swartwout received the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. Waffles are a delightful breakfast food and can be paired with almost any topping. Butter and maple syrup, fruit and whipped cream, a big scoop of ice cream, or even a helping of fried chicken—the choice is yours!

Did you know that the first waffles originated in Ancient Greece? It’s true! The Greeks would cook flat cakes called “obelios” between two metal pans held over a fire. Today, all you need is a waffle iron and a yummy recipe for waffle batter.

To celebrate National Waffle Day, cook up some homemade waffles and have breakfast-for-dinner tonight! Enjoy!

National Sponge Cake Day

Today is National Sponge Cake Day! Sponge cake is the perfect dessert to enjoy at the end of a warm summer day. It is light and fluffy and has just enough sweetness to cleanse the palette after a meal.

Traditional sponge cake recipes call for three very basic ingredients: sugar, eggs, and flour. The key to the perfect sponge cake is in the technique. The batter must be beaten thoroughly in order to create volume. There are many varieties of this dessert including the Victoria Sponge Cake. This version is loaded with jam that is spread between several layers of the cake. The dessert was named after Queen Victoria who enjoyed having a slice of it with her afternoon tea.

To celebrate National Sponge Cake Day, bake a homemade sponge cake to share with friends and family, or buy one from your local bakery! Enjoy!

Be An Angel Day
It’s Be An Angel Day! This day was established by Jayne Howard Feldman in 1993. Its purpose is to encourage people to perform random acts of kindness and to help those in need.

Use today to put others before yourself, and to reach out to those who need some extra support. Even a small act of kindness can go a long way! Fill a random parking meter, mow your neighbor's lawn, or send an unexpected note to a loved one. All of these acts are great ways to be an angel for a day!

Every act of generosity can make a difference. Today, take the time to be an angel to someone. Whether you choose to do a favor for a friend or volunteer your time to assist others in your community, be sure to celebrate this occasion. Extend a helping hand, offer a kind word, or show someone your gratitude. Enjoy Be An Angel Day!

Snuffleupagus’ Birthday

Today is Mr. Snuffleupagus’ birthday! He is a classic Sesame Street character who resembles a woolly mammoth, but with a long pointed tail, trunk, and no tusks! He also goes by Snuffy, and has a younger sister named Alice.

Snuffy’s best friend is Big Bird. In the early days of Sesame Street no one else saw Snuffy, so everyone thought he was just Big Bird’s invisible friend! Several years later he finally made his appearance. He loves foods such as spaghetti and cabbage, and his favorite drink is sassafras tea. Snuffy also enjoys opera music.

Celebrate Mr. Snuffleupagus’ birthday by watching an episode of Sesame Street or by making spaghetti and cabbage for dinner. You can also celebrate by sending one of our free Sesame Street online invitations for an upcoming party!

National Soft Ice Cream Day

It's National Soft Ice Cream Day! Also known as “soft serve,” this swirled delight is served using a special machine. Ice cream vendors also use a special technique to double the amount of air in soft ice cream, which creates its light, smooth texture.

Soft ice cream has been around for about a century. Although its exact origins are unknown, we do know that the first references to soft ice cream appeared in the early 1900s. At that time, only a few types existed. Now, most ice cream shops serve a variety of fun flavors.

A summer day is the perfect time to enjoy this delicious snack. Grab a big cone full of soft ice cream today to celebrate National Soft Ice Cream Day!

National Vanilla Custard Day

Today is National Vanilla Custard Day! Vanilla custard is a sweet pudding-like dish made with vanilla, eggs, sugar, and milk. It can be enjoyed on its own or as a topping for other desserts.

Vanilla custard has been around since the Middle Ages, and was traditionally used as a pie filling. (A very simple custard tart was a popular dessert during that time period.) Today, custard is an important component in many dessert recipes including éclairs, trifle, and Boston cream pie.

To celebrate National Vanilla Custard Day, whip up your favorite homemade custard dessert to share with friends and family. Enjoy!

Bratwurst Day

Today is Bratwurst Day! Bratwurst is a heavily spiced sausage, usually enjoyed on a roll with mustard or by itself with a side of sauerkraut. The term “bratwurst” is a compound of two German words—“braten,” which means “to fry” and “wurst,” which means “sausage.”

Bratwursts originated in Germany and have been around since the 14th century. These sausages are generally made from pork, veal, or beef. Truly dedicated fans can attend the annual Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival in Ohio to celebrate this historical dish.

Today, grab a “brat” in honor of Bratwurst Day. Don’t forget to wash it down with some beer!

International Youth Day

Today is International Youth Day! The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the state of young people around the globe. It is our opportunity to think about the different problems that the youth of today face, such as malnutrition and disease – and to work together to find solutions. Together, we can make a difference!

In 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated August 12th as International Youth Day. The hope was that people would organize activities on this day that would educate the public about issues that involve youth. The assembly also wanted to promote the World Program of Action for Youth, which is dedicated to finding solutions to these situations.

Today, check out the events in your neighborhood that are dedicated to this cause. Participate in one or organize your own! Find out more about International Youth Day here.

National Raspberry Tart Day

Today is National Raspberry Tart Day! The tart is the perfect combination of crispy crust, creamy filling, and fresh fruit. Tarts originated during the Middle Ages. Although sweet fruit-topped tarts are the most popular, many savory and salty varieties also exist. For example, in France, many of these open-faced pies are made with eggs, cheeses, meats, and vegetables. Whether you prefer them filled with chocolate or goat cheese, tarts are always delicious!

To celebrate National Raspberry Tart Day, head to your local bakery to pick up one of these fresh-baked delights! Feeling creative? Make your own raspberry tart!

National S'mores Day
It’s National S’mores Day! S'mores are a delicious treat made from three simple ingredients—graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and melted chocolate bars. Yum!

The first official s'mores recipe was published in the Girl Scout Handbook in 1927, but culinary historians believe that the tradition began much earlier. Over the years, the recipe was passed from camper to camper and eventually became the most famous fireside dessert. Ever wondered why it is called a s’more? Because you’ll always want "some more" of this decadent sweet!

Today, grab a few friends, make a campfire, and have some s’mores. No bonfire? No problem! You can toast marshmallows in a toaster oven or a microwave. Happy National S'mores Day!

World Cat Day

Today is World Cat Day! This day celebrates our furry felines and the joy they bring to our lives. The holiday was founded in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) along with other animal rights groups.

People have owned cats as pets for over 9,500 years, and they are currently the most popular pet in the world! Despite being somewhat solitary creatures, cats are a very social species and make wonderful companions for young and old alike.

As a pet, a cat can really add a lot to your household. It's been reported that cat ownership may improve mental health, provide emotional support, and alleviate feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness. No prescription needed!

Today, give your feline friend some extra attention, or consider adopting a new four-legged member of the family from a local animal shelter!

National Root Beer Float Day
It’s National Root Beer Float Day! Between the creamy vanilla ice cream and the frothy root beer foam, how can anyone resist this sweet refreshment? Today we celebrate this tasty summer treat.

At the end of the 19th century, a man named Frank Wisner invented the first root beer float. This early version was also known as a “black cow.” To make one of these delicious beverages, just add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to a tall glass of root beer. (Note: If you reverse the directions and add the root beer to the ice cream you’ll end up with a big mess!)

Today, enjoy this delicious American tradition and make your own float for National Root Beer Float Day!

International Beer Day
Beer drinkers rejoice—it's International Beer Day! Founded in 2007, this international holiday (always the first Friday in August) was created to celebrate the production, consumption, and enjoyment of beer.

Did you know that beer may have been invented before bread? That’s right—legend has it that our prehistoric ancestors brewed the first beer from grain before they baked the first loaf of bread!

Whether or not this story is true, sources up to 6,000 years old have documented the creation of beer in Mesopotamia. Talk about an ancient art! Today, many varieties of beer exist across the globe. In fact, beer is the third most popular beverage in the world, behind water and tea. That’s why in some countries, you’ll find beer vending machines!

On this day, expect to find beer specials and events at bars, restaurants, and breweries across the world! Raise your glass for International Beer Day!

Coast Guard Day

Today, we honor the military branch that protects our waters and shorelines: the United States Coast Guard.

Did you know that the term "Coast Guard" wasn't used until 1915? This military branch originated on August 4, 1790 and was originally referred to as the Revenue Cutter Service. More than two hundred years later, we celebrate all that the Coast Guard has done to protect our country!

Did you know that Grand Haven, Michigan, is known as Coast Guard City, USA? Their annual celebration is famous for it's large gathering of people in celebration and commemoration of the Coast Guard.

To celebrate this day, make sure to take a moment to commemorate the Coast Guard. Be on the look out for festivals, parades, and other events in your area. Happy Coast Guard Day!

National Watermelon Day

Today is National Watermelon Day! Watermelon is a delicious summer fruit that has become a staple at family picnics and cookouts. Did you know that watermelons are 92% water? No wonder they’re so refreshing!

There are around 300 different kinds of watermelon in the U.S. and Mexico. You can find red, pink, white, and yellow varieties in various sizes and shapes. Watermelons are usually quite large, and many county fairs award prizes for the biggest ones. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds. To learn more interesting watermelon facts, check out www.watermelon.org.

To celebrate National Watermelon Day, have some watermelon for dessert tonight! Slice it up and eat it plain, cook it on the grill, mix it into a salsa, or blend it into a cocktail. Enjoy!

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
It’s National Ice Cream Sandwich Day! On the beach or in an ice cream shop, these sweet sandwiches are always delicious.

Ice cream sandwiches come in many varieties. In their traditional form, vanilla ice cream is tucked between two thin layers that resemble chocolate cake. Other versions include chipwiches—ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.

Variations of this delight can also be found in different countries. In Australia, the most popular sandwiches are called “Giant Sandwiches," while "Maxibons" are half-dipped in chocolate. However, the most exotic ice cream sandwiches might be found in Singapore. Here, red bean, yam, and honeydew are all popular flavors.

To celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, visit your nearest grocery store or ice cream truck and get a big ice cream sandwich. Enjoy!

International Day of Friendship
Today is International Day of Friendship! Take time today to truly appreciate the friends in your life – and tell them how much you care. Never forget that the friendships you have made throughout your life have had a great impact on who you are today!

This holiday was created in 2011 by the UN General Assembly to foster the idea that friendships can inspire peace efforts and bring communities together. These friendships can be between individuals, countries, cultures and beyond.

Each year on this day, the UN encourages community groups and government organizations to hold public events and activities that promote this sense of friendship and understanding. Today, spend time with old friends or set out to make new ones!

Break out mom’s famous recipe – it’s National Lasagna Day! This delicious Italian dish is usually made with layers of flat pasta sheets, tomato sauce, and cheese – but there are dozens of different variations. Some popular additions are meat, vegetables, and Béchamel sauce.

People have been eating noodles for at least 4,000 years, but culinary historians disagree over when and where the first pasta dish originated. We do know that tomatoes are a "New World" food, which means pasta and tomato dishes (like lasagna) have only been around since the 16th century.

To celebrate National Lasagna Day, bake a big pan of lasagna. Grab a bottle of red wine and invite some friends over to enjoy a fun, family-style dinner!

National Milk Chocolate Day

Chocoholics unite—it’s National Milk Chocolate Day!

How is milk chocolate different from other chocolates? It's a mix of cocoa solids and either dry or condensed milk. While dark chocolate is traditionally used as a baking ingredient, this lighter version is used to make chocolate candy bars, hot chocolate, and many other delicious desserts.

Did you know that chocolate actually has mood-enhancing benefits? That’s right—chocolate can make you happy! This is due to the fact that it contains a stimulant called theobromine and a compound called anandamide. Now that’s a reason to celebrate!

Today, enjoy milk chocolate your favorite way. Happy Milk Chocolate Day!

Walk on Stilts Day

It’s Walk on Stilts Day! Most often seen in parades and at the circus, stilt-walking is actually an ancient art. To learn how to do it, all you need is a pair of stilts and lots of practice (and maybe some extra padding, in case you take a tumble).

Did you know that some people used to actually need stilts? It’s true—in the 19th century, stilt-walking began in Landes, France. Residents of this marshy area took up stilt-walking as a way to navigate the wet terrain. It is said that they performed all of their daily outdoor tasks on stilts!

If you've been waiting for an excuse to give this fun activity a try, today’s your day! Keep on the lookout for stilt-walking festivals or events happening in your area to give it whirl. Happy Walk on Stilts Day!

Bert’s Birthday

Today is Bert’s birthday! Bert is a beloved character from Sesame Street, most often spotted with best friend Ernie. He was created by Don Stahlin and Jim Henson in 1969, and has been on the show ever since.

Bert and Ernie are complete opposites, which creates constant conflict and comedy! Bert is the serious, smart, agitated, and boring one of the duo, while Ernie is fun, mischievous, naïve, and outgoing. Bert’s favorite hobbies are playing with pigeons, eating oatmeal, and collecting bottle caps.

Celebrate Bert’s birthday as you watch an episode of Sesame Street with your family. You can also celebrate by sending one of our free Sesame Street online invitations for your next party!

National Hot Fudge Sundae Day

Today is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day! A sundae is the perfect treat to enjoy on a summer night. The cold ice cream paired with a warm, chocolate topping is one of the most delicious combinations known to man. Add some nuts, whipped cream, and cherries on top and you’ve got yourself a world-famous dessert!

The Guinness Book of World Records has documented several record-setting sundaes. For example, the most expensive sundae can be ordered at Serendipity 3 in New York City for the hefty sum of $1000. In 2009, the Kids Club in Brunswick, Georgia created the world’s longest sundae. It measured over 130 feet long!

To celebrate National Hot Fudge Sundae Day, you don’t have to go to such great lengths. Just treat yourself to a scrumptious hot fudge sundae with all of your favorite toppings!

Hammock Day

Picture this: it's mid-July, the sun shines as you rest on a hammock, completely relaxed. This is the essence of Hammock Day.

Today’s reason to celebrate reminds us to slow down, breathe easy and enjoy these beautiful summer months. Though its exact origins are unknown, it is said that hammocks originated hundreds of years ago in South America. Allegedly, the journals of Christopher Columbus provide the first documentation of the hammock. However, some sources attribute this invention to the Ancient Greeks. One thing is for sure—hammocks have always been symbols of leisure.

Today, take a few minutes to sit back and unwind on a hammock. There's no better way to celebrate Hammock Day! Grab a cool drink and a good book, or lie back for a much needed nap. Happy Hammock Day!

National Lollipop Day

Today is National Lollipop Day! Lollipops come in a variety of different shapes, sizes, and flavors. You can make traditional hard-candy lollipops with just four simple ingredients—sugar, water, corn syrup, and the flavoring of your choice.

Culinary historians believe that the lollipop (or at least some form of it) has been around since the prehistoric era. It is presumed that humans often enjoyed honey on a stick as a delicious treat. No one knows with certainty how the modern-day lollipop was invented, however, we do know how the lollipop got its name. George Smith, the owner of a small American candy store, came up with the sweet's name in the early 1900s. He coined the sweet confection a "lollipop" after his favorite racehorse—Lolly Pop.

To celebrate National Lollipop day, head to your local candy or convenience store and grab a lollipop to celebrate! Enjoy!

National Daiquiri Day

It’s National Daiquiri Day! The daiquiri is a rum-based cocktail invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. It is believed that Cox created the first daiquiri in the early 1900s at a small bar in Santiago, Cuba. After having run out of gin, Cox opted for a rum-based cocktail instead.

The original daiquiri recipe called for white rum, lime juice, and sugar. According to another legend, Ernest Hemingway inspired the creation of the frozen variety at El Floridita in Havana in the 1940s. The bartender’s name was Constantino Ribalaigua, and he is often considered the true creator of the daiquiri. Today, there are many daiquiri flavors and varieties from which to choose, including the popular strawberry daiquiri.

To celebrate National Daiquiri Day, share a round of these delicious cocktails with your friends! Make them at home or look for drink specials at your local bar. Cheers!

National Caviar Day

Today is National Caviar Day! Caviar is processed, salted fish roe (otherwise known as fish eggs). The eggs are tiny, round, and usually black in color, but there are also orange and red varieties. Although it may seem like a slightly odd thing to eat, caviar was once reserved strictly for royalty. Today, it is still considered a delicacy all over the world.

Many people use the term “caviar” to describe any kind of fish egg, but true caviar must come from sturgeon—a group of about 25 species of fish. Some examples of sturgeon are beluga, osetra, and sevruga. These particular fish produce some of the finest varieties of caviar in the world.

Caviar is quite salty so it is usually enjoyed plain, but it can also be used to garnish certain dishes. If you’re feeling adventurous, try some today! You can usually find caviar at specialty food stores. Otherwise, just head to a local seafood restaurant or grill a nice piece of fish to celebrate National Caviar Day. Bon appétit!

National Gummi Worm Day

It’s National Gummi Worm Day! These yummy candies were created by the German company Trolli in 1981.

Did you know that gummi worms were not the first “gummis” made? That’s right—another familiar candy, the gummi bear, was invented about 60 years before the worm. This first gummi was created by Hans Riegel, the founder of Haribo. It was named because of its rubber-like texture. In fact, "gummi" means “rubber” in German.

These creepy, crawly treats now exist in a variety of flavors. Sweet or sour, the choice is yours! Grab a bag of your favorite gummi worms and celebrate National Gummi Worm Day!

Bastille Day

Today is Bastille Day! Bastille Day is a national holiday in France, celebrated annually on July 14. It is quite similar to the Independence Day festivities in the United States.

The Bastille was a stronghold built in Paris in the 14th century. In fact, the word “bastille” means “fortress” in French. During his reign, Louis XVI used it as a prison and the structure became a symbol of his power. In 1789, rioters stormed the Bastille and proceeded to demolish it. It was an act of rebellion and marked the beginning of the French Revolution.

Today, the French celebrate Bastille Day and their independence with parties, parades, and festivals. Uncork a bottle of French wine or dine at a French restaurant to join in the fun!

National French Fries Day

Today is National French Fries Day! French fries are the ultimate feel-good food, and there are dozens of different ways to enjoy them. Whether you prefer your fries Cajun-style, sweet potato, crinkle-cut, curly, waffle, or covered in chili and cheese, today is the day to celebrate this American favorite.

Although the exact origin of French fries is unknown, one theory suggests that they date back to 17th century Belgium. The inhabitants of this region often cooked small fried fish to accompany their meals. When weather conditions made it too dangerous to go fishing, they cut up potatoes in long, thin strips (to resemble the fish) and fried them!

Today, French fries are a global phenomenon. Whether it’s “pommes frites” in France, “patatas fritas” in Spain, or “chips” in the UK, French fries are a worldwide favorite. Grab an order of fries today to celebrate National French Fries Day!

Pecan Pie Day

It’s Pecan Pie Day! This sweet delight has the best of both worlds—a smooth filling and a crunchy top. Traditional recipes for pecan pie call for ingredients like roasted pecans, butter, eggs, and brown sugar, but there are many different variations. Some people even choose to add special ingredients like chocolate or bourbon.

Most Americans consider pecan pie to be a Southern specialty, but this type of pie is actually French in origin. French immigrants living in New Orleans baked the first American pecan pies. Many years later, the Karo company popularized the dessert with recipes that called for the company’s corn syrup.

Even though it’s not Thanksgiving, today is a great day to eat a slice of pecan pie! Pick up a pie at your local bakery or grocery store to share with friends. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and enjoy!

World Population Day

Today is World Population Day! There are billions of people who live on this planet, but the growth of the Earth’s population has caused many social and environmental problems. Poverty and hunger are two of the key issues.

The UN established World Population Day to raise public awareness about the challenges we face. The goal is to get people around the world to help those who are negatively affected by population growth. It’s hard for one person to bring about a solution that will influence the entire world. However, if every individual tries to make a difference in his or her local community, then change is possible.

This month, volunteer your time at a soup kitchen, donate to your local food pantry, or talk to your friends about the problems at hand. You can make a difference!

Chocolate Day

Today is a delicious reason to celebrate—it’s Chocolate Day!

Did you know that chocolate actually comes from trees? It's true! This small tree is called Theobroma cacao, or the cocoa tree. Its fruit produces cocoa seeds, which in turn produces cocoa powder and chocolate. If only chocolate bars grew on trees!

If you're a chocoholic, then you have two more chocolate days to celebrate! International Chocolate Day is on September 13 and National Chocolate Day is on October 28.

Today, take the time to enjoy one of the most popular desserts in the world. Whether you prefer to munch on a chocolate bar, sip on a steaming cup of hot chocolate, or smother an ice cream sundae in hot chocolate fudge, be sure to get your chocolate fix! Happy Chocolate Day!

Eid Al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr begins tonight at sundown! This Muslim holiday celebrates the end of Ramadan—a holy month of fasting. In Arabic, “Eid” means “festivity” and “fitr” means “breaking the fast.” There are over 2 billion people in the world who observe the religion of Islam, and many of them will gather together today for this joyous occasion.

There are many traditions associated with Eid al-Fitr. In the days leading up to this holiday, each Muslim family donates a specific amount of food to those in need. This ensures that everyone can participate in the celebration. On the day of Eid, families and friends will host large feasts, exchange gifts, and send well-wishes to loved ones near and far.

To celebrate Eid al-Fitr, personalize a free eCard with your own Eid greetings, invite some friends over for a home-cooked meal, and make plans for the upcoming harvest season. Happy Eid!

Independence Day
Today is Independence Day! On this day in 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. This historic document severed all ties with Great Britain and established many of our nation’s fundamental principles of freedom – including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, but four other delegates assisted him. Among them was John Adams. Both Adams and Jefferson later served as President of the United States, and both men passed away on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of our nation’s birth.

To celebrate the 4th of July, send a free eCard to friends and family, host a cookout, or watch your local fireworks display! Happy Birthday, America!

World UFO Day
Today is World UFO Day! People have been reporting UFO sightings since the beginning of recorded history. UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) became a major topic in pop culture after World War II, around the same time that the United States and Russia began experimenting with rocket science. Over the years, there have been a number of governmental investigations into UFO reports, but none of them has resulted in any significant evidence.

The possibility of life beyond our planet is thrilling to imagine, so it’s no surprise that aliens have become a common subject in our modern-day books and films. To celebrate World UFO Day, invite friends and family over to watch a science fiction movie this weekend! Choose a classic film like Star Wars, Signs, E.T., Contact, or Independence Day. If science fiction movies aren't your thing, dream up some intergalactic crafts or baking projects to make, like a UFO-shaped cake. Happy World UFO Day!

Canada Day
O Canada! Today is Canada Day—the birthday of America’s "Neighbor to the North." On this day in 1867, the Constitution Act united Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Canada Province (modern-day Quebec and Ontario) into a single country. The Constitution Act of 1867 also granted Canada quite a bit of independence from England. Today, Canadians at home and abroad will celebrate with patriotic barbecues, parades, concerts, and fireworks.

Did you know that some of the greatest inventions of our time have come from Canada? Canadians are responsible for light bulbs, telephones, zippers, egg cartons, snowmobiles, instant mashed potatoes, peanut butter, walkie-talkies, IMAX, Trivial Pursuit, basketball, and ice hockey!

Even if you aren’t Canadian, today is your opportunity to celebrate the great nation of Canada. Host a barbecue for friends and family this month, watch a movie that stars your favorite Canadian actor, or listen to your favorite Canadian band. Happy Canada Day!

Meteor Day
Today is Meteor Day! The word “meteor” refers to a visible streak of light that is produced by debris falling to the Earth from space. We also call this beautiful phenomenon a “shooting star” or “falling star.” The tradition of wishing upon a shooting star can be traced all the way back to 127 AD. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer, hypothesized that the Gods occasionally liked to peer down on Earth from up above. From time to time, a star or two would slip past them and fall through the heavens. Anyone who saw a shooting star knew that the Gods were paying attention, so it was the perfect time to make a wish!

Did you know that shooting stars are actually quite small? The average meteoroid is about the size of a pebble. Around 15,000 tons of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day, but very few of them actually reach the surface. When they do reach Earth, they are called meteorites.

To celebrate Meteor Day, spend some time star-gazing tonight, or find out when the next meteor shower is going to happen. If you see a shooting star, remember to make a wish!

Paul Bunyan Day
Today is Paul Bunyan Day! Paul Bunyan is one of the best-known heroes in American folklore. This legendary lumberjack (and his faithful companion Babe the Blue Ox) starred in many of the “tall tales” told in the Midwest during the 1800s. According to the stories, Bunyan was a huge man with an amazing amount of physical strength. He single-handedly founded the logging industry, cut down whole forests in North Dakota, created Lake Superior with his bare hands, and even trained carpenter ants to help him with his tasks!

A young woman named K. Bernice Stewart was the first person to document the original Bunyan "tall tales". While studying at the University of Wisconsin in 1914, she gathered the stories from local loggers. Today, Paul Bunyan is mentioned in more than 1,000 books and has become one of the most widespread icons in American culture.

To celebrate Paul Bunyan Day, read one of the original Bunyan tales!

Sunglasses Day
It’s Sunglasses Day! Sunglasses are quite possibly the most important fashion accessory of the entire summer season. Humans have been wearing protective eyewear for centuries, but the stylish designs we’re accustomed to today are a much more recent invention.

During the prehistoric era, the Inuit people used walrus ivory to create sun goggles, which blocked out the powerful rays of sun that reflected off the snow and ice. By the 1700s, doctors were regularly prescribing tinted glasses for vision correction, and by the 1930s the Foster Grant company was selling modern-day sunglasses on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey. On the eve of World War II, a little company called Ray Ban began producing anti-glare sunglasses for pilots. “Aviators” became the first commercially successful sunglasses.

To celebrate Sunglasses Day, pick up a new pair of shades at your local sunglasses store!

Public Service Day

Happy Public Service Day! In 2002, the United Nations declared the first annual Public Service Day. The purpose of this day is to recognize the contributions made by public servants all over the world. Today is the perfect day to organize a volunteer project for this summer. Every little bit helps! Every little bit helps!

There are many causes worth fighting for in your local community, your state, your country, and the world. Whether you volunteer at a local food pantry, clean up a park, or visit at a nursing home, the opportunities are endless! Volunteers are always needed in schools, nursing homes, churches, and beyond – so be sure to get your friends and family on board too. Remember, every act of public service, no matter how small, can make a difference!

National Chocolate Eclair Day

It’s National Chocolate Eclair Day! Did you know that “éclair” is the French word for lightning? It may have gotten its name from the "flash" of frosting that glistens across its top, though the direct connection between lightning and this delicious French pastry is unclear.

The eclair has been a favorite treat since its creation in the 1860s, and it will undoubtedly continue to be a bakery shop staple for a long time. The French call the dough of these treats “choux,” which is carefully baked to allow for a hollow interior. Then cream, custard, or purée is piped into its center and it is topped off with fondant icing.

With its flaky dough and sweet, creamy filling, this dessert has become a global favorite. To celebrate National Chocolate Eclair Day, head over to your nearest bakery!

Summer Solstice

Today is the Summer Solstice! For people who live in the Northern Hemisphere of the world, today is the longest day of the year and the first official day of summer. In the Arctic Circle, there will be 24 hours of daylight!

The summer solstice occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is closest to the sun. This occurs in late June for the Northern Hemisphere and late December for the Southern Hemisphere. The summer solstice is a significant time for many religions and cultures. Today, people all over the world will mark this important milestone in the year with festivals, gatherings, and rituals.

To celebrate the summer solstice, grab your sunglasses and head outside to enjoy the extra hours of daylight! Happy summer!

International Picnic Day
It’s International Picnic Day! Today we celebrate one of the greatest ways to enjoy the summer season—an outdoor picnic with friends, family, games and activities, and delicious food.

During the Victorian era, picnics were very important social occasions. They offered the rare opportunity for young men and women to spend time together in the great outdoors. They were also quite elaborate. A picnic for twenty people might feature cold salmon, lamb, veal, chicken, ham, pigeon pie, sandwiches, fruit, a selection of cheeses, and a variety of baked goods! The modern-day picnic is much less complicated. In fact, the phrase “it’s a picnic” means “it’s easy.”

To celebrate International Picnic Day, invite your friends and family to a summer picnic. Find a suitable location at a local park or field, and sit back and enjoy an al fresco meal in the company of your loved ones. Happy International Picnic Day!

National Fudge Day

Today is National Fudge Day! Fudge is a deliciously sweet and rich candy. The most popular flavor is the original chocolate, though it does come in many other flavors. Some popular flavors are peanut butter, Oreo, marshmallow, nut, maple, and rocky road. Fudge tends to be cut into small squares and has a smooth, soft texture.

The first documentation of fudge was in 1886 in a letter from a Vassar College student. In it, she discussed this sweet confection that her cousin made and sold in Baltimore, Maryland. In the late nineteenth century, shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan began to sell fudge. It is still sold today in some of these original shops! Many other fudge recipes were created and sold in the late nineteenth century.

Celebrate by making your own fudge today. This classic American treat is made out of three main ingredients – sugar, milk, and butter. Add some other tasty ingredients like chocolate chips, nuts, or fruit to create a unique flavor. National Fudge Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in this decadent treat!

National Lobster Day

Today is National Lobster Day! Did you know that lobster was once considered peasant food? In the 1800s, lobsters were incredibly plentiful and New Englanders could simply walk down the beach and capture them during low tide. Many servants lived off of lobster during this time period. In fact, one Massachusetts community had to pass a law that limited how often you could serve lobster to your servants. It was a modest three times a week!

Today, lobster is considered a luxurious delicacy all over the world. In the state of Maine alone, lobster fishing is a $1 billion industry. There are many ways to enjoy lobster, but the most popular cooking methods are boiling, baking, steaming, and grilling.

To celebrate National Lobster Day, host your own lobster bake or order some lobster at your favorite restaurant tonight!

Flag Day

Today is Flag Day! On this day in 1777 the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution, which designated the first official American flag. The first flag, which featured thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, has become known as the “Betsy Ross flag,” but it is uncertain whether Betsy Ross actually created the original design. Did you know that there have been twenty-seven different American flags over the course of our nation’s history? The one we use today, which features fifty stars, became our national emblem in 1960.

President Woodrow Wilson designated Flag Day as an official holiday in 1916. However, the idea of an annual celebration of the flag dates back to 1885 when schoolteacher Bernard J. Cigrand held the first known Flag Day.

To celebrate Flag Day, decorate your home with an American flag and start brainstorming party ideas for the 4th of July or get started on your 4th of July online invitations!

Sewing Machine Day

Today is Sewing Machine Day! Thomas Saint patented the first sewing machine in 1790. Since then, the sewing machine has become one of the iconic symbols of the Industrial Revolution, representing the transition from traditional handmade goods to automated production.

For many decades the sewing machine was a standard household appliance, but it is no longer considered a domestic necessity. Although the heyday of the sewing machine has come and gone, we can still recognize its significance in our history. Without this important invention, the process of making clothing (and any sewn item) would be extremely tedious. Each article would have to be sewn by hand, stitch by stitch!

To celebrate Sewing Machine Day, dig out your sewing machine and start a new project, or sign up for a sewing class to learn this important handcraft!

Iced Tea Day

Today is Iced Tea Day! Iced tea is an iconic summer beverage and one of the most refreshing elixirs known to man. There is something magical about the combination of brewed tea, mint leaves, and fresh lemon slices served over ice. Historians believe that people began serving cold tea sometime during the 19th century. The drink became popular when vendors started selling it at public events and the World’s Fair.

Today, people make iced tea using a variety of different flavors. You can also mix iced tea with other beverages. One of the most popular iced tea beverages is an “Arnold Palmer,” which consists of half iced tea and half lemonade.

Sweetened or unsweetened, flavored or unflavored, celebrate Iced Tea Day with a nice, tall glass of your favorite iced tea!

Ramadan

Today is the first day of Ramadan! Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims use this month to reflect and evaluate themselves in relation to Islamic guidance.

Muslims spend each day during this month fasting during daylight hours. This fast includes eating, drinking, smoking, and participating in any ill-natured activities. The time spent fasting is believed to help purify the soul, refocus attention to religion, and practice self-control and commitment. Fasting is one of the main types of Islamic worship, as it proves obedience and compliance. During Ramadan, Muslims also ask for forgiveness for their wrong doings in the past, and work toward bettering themselves for the coming year.

Ramadan is a holiday that brings brotherhood and customs for a special celebration. Wish your family and friends a Happy Ramadan this month!

National Rocky Road Day

Today is National Rocky Road Day! Rocky road ice cream is a delicious dessert with an interesting culinary history. In 1929 after the stock market crash, a man named William Dreyer (the founder of Dreyer Ice Cream) calmed his Black Thursday nerves by creating the original rocky road. He mixed chunky almonds, mini marshmallows, and delicious milk chocolate ice cream to create a new ice cream flavor that would make people smile despite the tough economic times. It instantly became an American favorite and soon became popular all over the world.

Did you know that in Australia, people add jam to their rocky road ice cream? And in the United Kingdom, they add cherries and raisins! Celebrate National Rocky Road Day with a delicious rocky road ice cream sundae. Yum!

Oscar the Grouch's Birthday

Today is Oscar the Grouch’s birthday! We love this classic Sesame Street character for his grouchy, street-smart (yet lovable) personality. Puppeteer Caroll Spinney brought him to life in 1969, and was inspired by the voice of a New York City taxi driver he had while on his way to the production studio.

Oscar is often spotted with his friend and pet Slimey, a cute orange worm. Amidst all his grouchiness, he does get along with the neighborhood children! Another sweet side to Oscar is his choice of dessert. His favorite is spinach sardine chocolate fudge sundaes, followed closely by mashed bananas with ice cubes and cold beef gravy. Bon appetit!

Celebrate Oscar the Grouch’s birthday by watching an episode of Sesame Street with your family or concocting your own unusual birthday desserts. You can also celebrate your love of Oscar the Grouch by sending one of our free Sesame Street online invitations for an upcoming party!

National Macaroon Day

It’s National Macaroon Day! Macaroons are small unleavened cakes with a crispy outer layer and a moist, chewy center. Although they are the same size as cookies, macaroons do not contain any flour and therefore do not fall into that classification. The most popular macaroon varieties are coconut, almond, and chocolate.

Culinary historians believe that macaroons originated in Italy. In fact, the word “macaroon” comes from the Italian word for paste: “maccarone.” A primary ingredient in early macaroon recipes was almond paste.

In 1533, Italian monks and nuns introduced macaroons to France. Two Benedictine nuns, Sister Marguerite and Sister Marie-Elisabeth, began baking and selling these small sweets to help pay for their housing. They became known as the “Macaroon Sisters,” and their baking became famous throughout Europe.

To celebrate National Macaroon Day, buy some delicious macaroons or bake a homemade batch to share with friends and coworkers!

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day. This holiday commemorates and honors all of the men and women who died while serving our country. Send a free Memorial Day eCard to friends and family to mark the occasion. Memorial Day was originally founded to honor the soldiers who gave their lives in the Civil War, but it has since been expanded to include all wars involving the United States military. It has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1971.

Traditional Memorial Day observances include visiting cemeteries and memorials as well as attending parades and dedications. A National Moment of Remembrance also occurs at 3 p.m. local time across the nation. Check out your local newspaper for events going on in your neighborhood to honor our nation's fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer and is often celebrated with picnics, family gatherings, barbeques, weekend getaways, and sporting events. Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Indianapolis 500
Today is the Indianapolis 500! The Indy 500 draws thousands of spectators each year to its speedway in Indianapolis to watch the five hundred mile, two hundred lap race. Once called "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," this race has become an American tradition.

The first Indianapolis 500 race drew 80,200 spectators who each paid a $1 admission fee. Since then, capacity at the speedway has increased to 250,000 permanent seats, making the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the world's largest spectator sporting facility!

The Indy 500 is an event rich in traditions. For example, multi-colored balloons are always released at the start of the race. It's also become tradition for the winner to kneel and kiss the "Yard of Bricks" to pay tribute to the history of the Speedway. It's the combination of tradition and excitement that make the Indy 500 one of the most popular single-day sporting events in the world.

To celebrate, invite friends over and tune in to find out who will win this year!

Sunscreen Day

Today is Sunscreen Day! With summer on the horizon, it’s time to start enjoying the great outdoors. It's important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and to enjoy a beautiful day without worry!

Even in ancient times, humans wanted products to protect their skin. Ancient Egyptians preferred the look of light skin to dark skin, so they invented a sun lotion to maintain a lighter complexion. They used a combination of rice bran, jasmine, and lupine in their sun lotions – and some of these ingredients are still used in sunscreens today!

Did you know that there are many scientists that are credited with discovering modern sunscreen? In 1936, chemist Eugene Schueller invented a preventative sunburn cream, and went on to start L’Oreal. Around the same time, Swiss chemist Franz Greiter was inspired to develop a sun lotion after he was sunburned while climbing Mount Piz Buin. His product came to the market under the name Piz Buin in 1946, and is still sold today. In 1944, Florida pharmacist Benjamin Green patented Red Vet Pet sunscreen, which became Coppertone suntan cream and was very popular throughout the 1950s (and still is today!).

Sunscreen Day is a good reminder to make sure you apply and reapply your sunscreen whenever you go outside. Enjoy the nice weather and wear your sunscreen!

National Blueberry Cheesecake Day

Today is National Blueberry Cheesecake Day! Although cheesecake recipes can be traced all the way back to Ancient Greece, the flavored versions we know and love today are a fairly recent innovation. People have come up with all sorts of interesting and unique cheesecake flavors, but today is a celebration of the classic blueberry variety.

The type of cheese used to make cheesecake has a huge impact on the flavor and texture of this delicious dessert. American cheesecakes are made with cream cheese, Italian cheesecakes are made with ricotta, and German and Polish cheesecakes are made with “quark” cheese, which is a type of curd cheese.

Blueberry cheesecake is one of the most popular cheesecake flavors. Enjoy a heavenly slice (or two) today to celebrate National Blueberry Cheesecake Day!
